It makes me want to tip my head sideways and look at the faces with no mouths, no noses, no eyebrows. Reminicsent of LeChithead's "Two Polar Bears in a Blizzard," I can really get an emotional kick out of the use of line. I'm still trying to figure out if those two sideways smilies making the funny mouth faces are referring to having sex on a ladder well while people in the apartment building watch. It almost screams for color while at the same time keeping my ass in the seat and my eyes moving full circle. Maybe it's a portrayal of anger and confusion at the same time. "I am having sex on a ladder! What the hell?" It is like the goldfish that swims in its tank, and when it takes a shit, everybody can see, but it can't do anything about it so it just continues taking a shit anyways. ~Eckie's written homework reads just like this ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 May 1998 21:24:45 -0500 From: "James C. I DEFINITLEY like him better than Moore. for a while, I actually Disliked Moore's playing after hearing Sherinian. DS has more variety in his sound choice, and I like his playing better, too. Also, he was the one who started the ball rolling with "Lines in the Sand," ie, he brought his song idea to the other guys and it became LitS. I like how he goes for unique keyboard sounds, not just synthesis of real instruments like horns or strings. and personally, I really dig the more open sound on FII from the guitars lightening up and the keys taking on a new demension. >I do say >though, that Rudess leaves me a little cold at times. Message-ID: Hi guys! On the subject of the Neil Peart reaction to Working man, here is part of an article in the Mordern Drummer of December 97. This was a pretty nice interview with Mike Portnoy about FII and its making, his drumming technics, back problems, influences/idols (hence, Neil Peart) etc... ++++ MD: Is there a downside to this [the Working Man] project that you're not mentioning? MP: Well, halfway through putting together the record, somebody in the Rush camp objected to it.They tried to pull the plug on the whole thing - and threatened the label with lawsuit - but that was dropped and the album was completed and released. Then I read an interview with Neal Peart on the internet where he discussed Working Man. He said that he refused to acknowledge it because it was an attempt by a bunch of "bar band" musicians to cash in on Rush's name and that it had nothing to do with paying a tribute. To say that I was disapointed was an understatement. My involvement in the project was completely out of respect and admiration for him and Rush, and it had nothing to do with money. It was something that I wanted to do because I loved the music. Neil has to realize that the same kids that voted for him in Modern Drummer polls in the 70's and 80's - the kids that admired him and that he influenced - are playing in today's bands. And to call me, Billy Sheehan, Steve Morse, Deen Castronovo, Stu Hamm - all of the people on the album - a bunch of bar band musician... well... I'd love to hang out in some of the bars he hangs in! I never met or spoke to Neil, but I always wanted to say "thanks" for the years of inspiration he gave me. I hoped that my contribution to this project would be a way of doing that. But, as you can see, it went unappreciated. I was really disapointed. ++++ What follows are two interesting questions and answers that would put a twits to the current mainstream/prog thread but I already sent this a few months back and I'm not about to reopen that whole can of worms. Carry on... Message-ID: well, it may be because I like Floyd, Led Zep, and Rush just as well, but Falling Into Infinity has some good stuff on it. You are being really strict if you trhink the only 2 prog songs on the album are ToT and HK. read my recent post, 7 out of the 11 songs I found progressive in some way. Prog doesn't mean complexity (example - Floyd) and odd time meters. Of course they are a pretty big part that make up progressive, but that is not all.progressive music takes you to a higher level musically (flame me all you want for being "elitist" ;-) but you get that (pardon the pun) rush when you hear it. It's uplifting. Its pretty hard to describe, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Its just exciting music musically, and that is another factor (which many of you seem to ignore) that makes up progressive rock, in my mind at least. Ok, I do like Floyd, they USED to be my favorite band (and Gilmour used to be my fav guitarist)...until I heard Dream Theater and John Petrucci. I said to myself "this is where the shits at, this is where prog is going" and from that moment on, DT has been my favorite band, and Petrucci has been my fav guitarist, and the type of player that I aspire(sp) to be someday. Now, I'm not the type to smoke pot or anything, cause I belive that it could royally screw up my playing ability, but somehow I do think that a lot Floyd fans are on it and well, this guy proves it... Message-ID: Well, am finally caught up w/ all of the past week or so Ytsejams... took way too long, considering how little was actually said... Anyway, on the one thread that I have an opinion on, I would say to get a pair of Sonic II earplugs, to the person who was asking. I got mine for like $12-$15 at a music store, and they do a really good job, filtering about evenly, as opposed tho the foam ones, which let in way too much bass, and little of anything else, IMO. -- +------------------------------------------+-----------------------+ | A daily dose of eMpTyV | Dream Theater | | will flush you mind right down the drain | Falling Into Infinity | | --- taken from: Just Let Me Breathe --- | In Stores NOW!! | +------------------------------------------+-----------------------+ Michael Burstin: email_address_removed Oh my God, they've killed Kenny!! http://www.cs.brandeis.edu/~mikeb/ Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial Email: http://www.cauce.org ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 May 1998 00:05:22 -0400 From: "earthblind, starbound" To: email_address_removed Subject: ascii Message-ID: >that's it, all you sighted fucks. He said even if they weren't scheduled, he'd go to hang out, so at least that's cool (he's a great guy to hang with, too, especially if you like making fun of everyone mercilessly like I do :).
