I've known for years that they're Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah. Talk about speed? These guys may not be the fastest, but they're fast and it sounds effortless. Their playing is also musical and well improvised. Strunz and Farah's music comes from Latin America and the Middle East, the old world flamenco and the new world of jazz improvisation, traditional classical guitars and electric bass. As Adrian Belew says, "I like it!" This song, "Twilight at the Zuq" is from their live album, LIVE (catchy title, yes?), which the two have produced on their own label, Selva. This mp3 sample is in mono and could be a bit better quality, but still this isn't bad. It's a good introduction to these musicians (Strunz-right channel, Farah-left). It's zipped to keep Netscape and the AOL browser from cooking the file. It's 2.5 mb and will be gone in a week. Have fun. -=- "I went outside to get a life, but everything was closed up tight." --------------------==== Broken via True Love ====------------------- http://www.afn.org/~afn39111 Butcher, Rape, Smash to Pieces ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 May 1998 17:25:12 PDT From: "Partha Mukhopadhyay" To: email_address_removed Subject: opening act? I'm in a band thats your basic "Rush" three -peice (guitar, drums, and a bass player that does some doubling on keys). We do one DT song, peruvian skies and we also do the begining of Erotomania in our medley (we cut it off right before the clean guitar comes in) but we want to do more. You Not Me was thrown around, but we decided that we should look for another (not a good showcase of DT's material). Burning My Soul was brought up, but we felt that I didn't have the right voice for it. So...any suggestions? What DT songs do you think we could do (excluding The Silent Man) with the "Rush" setup, also figuring in that the keyboard doubling stuff is more like what Geddy did around the 2112-Hemispheres era, not very heavy with the keys. Also consider the fact that I'm not exactly as good as Petrucci with the guitar. New Millennium - prog 2. You Not Me - mainstream 3. Peruvian Skies - prog 4. Hollow Years - mainstream 5. Burning my Soul - prog 6. Hell's Kitchen - prog 7. Lines in the Sand - prog 8. Take Away My Pain - mainstream 9. Just Let Me Breathe - prog 10. Anna Lee - mainstream 11. Trial of Tears - prog so lets see...4 out of 11 are mainstream sounding, which gives you 7 prog songs...and people stil bitch! And I'm gonna defend TAMP for a sec cause John wrote it for his father who died, did you really expect him to write a big progressive complex song for such a tragic event? I mean, thats a case where you'd want it to be emotional and not complex. And for another note, I do think that LitS is their most "Rush" sounding song to date. Anyone agree? Matt ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 May 1998 20:34:02 -0500 (CDT) From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: You Not Me Message-ID: I don't mind You Not Me either. Like I've said before, I don't mind a song like Half the World or Learning to Fly. I mean, just cause the song has a chorus and isn't in 9/8, does that make it a bad song? John still rocks during the solo, Mike does some cool double bass work. I know I'd rather listen to a more proggier song from FII, like ToT or PS, but just cause the song isn't complicated doesnt mean its bad. With this attitude, you'd probably say the Beatles suck. <> whoa right a second there! You Not Me is NOT alternative and grunge sounding. Hard Rock if anything, but calling it alturnative or grunge is an insult.
