Message-ID: Unlike most of the other people, it wasn't PMU, though that was the first song by DT I heard. For me it was Fates Warning. Well, before Fates it was the Ryche, and everyone on Screaming in Digital was raving about Fates, so I got Parallels and No Exit when I saw them, and moved to a.r-n-r.metal.progressive and this was 92 so everyone was talking about this fantastic album called Images and Words. DT was not what I was expecting. Their songs weren't as coherent as Fates or QR, but I&W made me a rather incoherent guy. Now I think Close to the Edge is tame. -=- "I went outside to get a life, but everything was closed up tight." --------------------==== Broken via True Love ====------------------- http://www.afn.org/~afn39111 Butcher, Rape, Smash to Pieces ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 May 98 14:20:14 -0500 From: "Brian Hayden" To: email_address_removed, seroussi@algonet.se Subject: "You asked for it, so go fuck yourself." First mistake, pigfucker. Self-explanitory. "Am I an asshole since I didn't grovel before mike and because I don't worship the ground he walks upon?" So, do these shows of bravado and individuality get you laid? I hope so, because it's sure not making you any friends. It'd really be shame if you made a fool of yourself for absolutely nothing. "Just to clarify: I don't expect DT to do anything to satisfy me, it would have just been nice if MP would have answered my questions." Followed by: "And make your hands dirty with some real work would be so bad? Must you live off your art?" So, you don't expect him to do anything to satisfy you. Just give up his living and start cleaning toilets or something in order to keep doing what *you* think his art should be. Second mistake, pigfucker. "Bottom line is: DT would do what they want no matter what I'll do" I almost had a heart attack here. I wasn't expecting anything halfway reasonable based on that first paragraph. To bad you followed it with... "I would keep on skipping many songs on FII and not force myself to like them." The fact that you felt compelled to point this out shows that you think the rest of us are lemmings, incapable of any thought other than dog-like loyalty. Guess what? If I wanted to know my mind, I wouldn't ask you, bitch. There's stuff on every album here and there that I don't like. So the fuck what? Ooooo, now that I've coolly set myself apart from the crowd maybe I can share some of the babe-fest that's heading your way. "What's the target of this post? Create discussion, I guess - this is a discussion group. Discuss, then." Seems to me your point was to show how cooooool you are because you're not a lemming like the rest of us. Can you do me a favor? What's that? "Yes, sir, I'd be happy too." Good! Get bent, goatboy! "Take Dan Swan for example. He works in his own study as a sound engineer and..." Last time I checked, Boy Genius, Mike Portnoy et al. are musicians, not engineers. But hey, I'm not a first name ignorantly-hack-on-his-life basis with Mr. Portnoy like you are, so maybe you know more about this side of his life than me. "Nice way to avoid the questions posed in the rest of the letter..." Nice way to badger somebody after your point gets shot to hell. I didn't see any unanswered questions there, Mental Wonder. Of course, he didn't give any responses in his last letter...but then, he answered all those comments earlier on. As a judge with some balls would say, "Asked and answered, biotch. Move the fuck on." To quote the immortal Dave Mustaine: "Last mistake." Jesus says go straight to hell, Pigfucker, do not pass Go because that $200 could get you either a year of 'Net access, which the world doesn't need, or a cheap hooker, and the world *really* doesn't need any chance of your genes living past your brain-dead waste of space self. The guys in DT are always willing to help us as fans, and appreciate everything we do for them...an example is Mike offering to put banners from fans up in his home recording studio...what a tribute to us as fans!!! In their case the only possible way for them to sell out would be to just up and say "fuck the fans," quit talking to us after shows, make cheesey shit like Hanson or the Spice girls (no offense to the many hanson and spice goons fans on the Ytsejam ) and make a shitty motion picture film, followed with action figures or dolls or something like that (god forbid!). I'd say DT is VERY far from this...even though an action figure of Mike P that transforms into an octopus would kinda kick ass :) ^ According to the circle of fifths, and the order of sharps and flats: ^ ^ If the alphabet continued as notes progressed (Using Major Key Sigs) ^ ^ (i.e. A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, etc.) eventually the key of Z Major ^ ^ would have 4 sharps. ^ ^ Eric Moegling: Manager for "Lifting Shadows Off A Ring" ^ ^ and "Progressive Genius" ^ ^ The Dream theater and Progressive Metal WebRings ^ ^ HOMEPAGE - http://www.wezl.org/NuGgeTMaN or http://www.wezl.org/lift ^ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 May 1998 15:30:36 -0400 From: The Digital Man To: email_address_removed Subject: is dt selling out? I'd like to get some more input on this point. Personally, I met Dream Theater in Madison, WI last November as a member of the local stage crew. John M, John P, James and Mike were all very nice and extremely approachable. However, if you were to ask any of the twenty or so local people who were in the theater before and during sound check (myself included), they would all tell you that Derek was a complete asshole! (I could go into detail if you want.) As a keyboard player myself, who admires Derek's playing, I was quite disappointed. I'd like to know if Derek has a bad reputation in general or if we just caught him on a bad day - so I'm asking Jammers to contribute their personal Derek stories - the good :-) the bad :-( and the ugly :-o (Well, not TOO personal of course.) Oh. Sorry. The couple of occasions I've had to hang backstage with Derek after a show have been nothing but positive -- in particular, that night when the whole freakin' list seemed to be backstage at Bitch Hell in December of 95. In my personal experience (and maybe I was just there on the wrong nights, who knows?) Derek's post-show appearances have been less common lately. But he's never been anything other than a total gentleman when I've been lucky enough to hang out with him. His birthday jamfest in the summer of '96 comes to mind. Those that were there can confirm that he, JP, MP, Greg Smith, Al Pitrelli, and the other luminaries that were there (the memories fade...) were all as nice as could be. It's an especially nice surprise when Derek comes out to the bar after a show to have a beer and hang out with whoever's there. First off, I agree 100% with the people who have pointed out how uncool it is to make a private conversation public like that. Isn't that one of the things that pissed us off so much about "Mr. HazeX"? Second, I think you made quite a leap going from a discussion about whether it's OK for DT to play some gigs as an opening band, to a discussion about what kind of music they record. Third, your argument about holding down a day job while still making music just doesn't hold water. Sure, I know lots of musicians that have day jobs, and some of them are mind-bogglingly good at their instruments. But I don't know a single one of them who has a nationally (much less internationally) distributed CD, nor do I know any of them who play gigs all over the country. Heck, most of them never play gigs more than 50 miles away from where they live. If you want to see Dream Theater take day jobs so that they can have complete artistic freedom, then you can say goodbye to their tours of the U.S., Europe, Japan, South America, etc. You can also say goodbye to being able to walk into your local music store and pick up their newest CD. Is that really what you want? Paul ----------- Paul Humm email_address_removed ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 3864 **************************
