Play for yourself. If people around you don't like it, fine. Just play what you think you should, and don't give a crap about what anyone else thinks. If they like it, they'll come to you, if they don't, they'll go see someone else. These were the words (well, not word for word) of John Mcglochlin (sp) in a recent Guitar Shop issue. If you want to be "brutal" then go ahead, if you want to be fast and precise, go ahead, if you want to be bluesy...well you get the idea. NO! but putting out a bunch of the same stuff album after album ain't all that cool, either. I will admit that I didn't give the whole album a real close listen, and I did kinda like the song that got played on the radio, but most of the stuff I heard was real generic. one riff was straigt from kill 'em all (and don't go off about mustaine being in metallica all those years ago, everyone knows that already). now, if megadeth went a different direction (say Fear Factory or even DT-esque), that would have been really cool. I really dig some of megadeth's stuff (although you have to admit that Cyclotron was pretty stupid), but straight-ahead metal isn't much my thing anymore, especially if it sounds regurgitated like what i heard on Cryptic Writings. maybe I was a little harsh since it ain't my thang no more, but I still really get off to kick ass heavy guitar or just plain cool guitar, and I didn't hear much on Cryptic writings. And >without music in your head, technique and theory are worthless - unless you >want to be in a cover band or be a non-writing member. I can't imagine >somebody wanting to play a musical instrument but not want to write music. My friend, I hate to jump on a fellow jammer's ass, but almost everything you said is total idiocy. You say you don't see anybody wanting to play music they don't write??? Don't tell that to the many classical or jazz musicians out there(though jazz musicians create as they play other's songs) There is alot to be said for being able to take someone else's music and putting your own interpretation into it. And, technique and theory are NEVER useless in true MUSIC. OH yeah, a band of crap like Prodigy can say that, because they are not true artists of music, they are entertainers. My definition of music(not saying that this is the almighty word of God) is this: an art form in which different sounds are produced in a comprehensive blend of melody, harmony, rhythm and form. While style is one thing, technique and theory is a totally different thing. One cannot appropriately express his or her style without having the ability to do it. When you look at great musicians, what do they have in common?? They all KNOW THEORY. They use that as the basis of what they are doing. Do we consider rappers to be great musicians?? hell no, or at least i hope not, very few of them know much, if anything, about MUSIC, they know how to entertain, and know how to write words, but that's about it... Much of what Adam said I agree with, but I also think this, that once a musician hits a certain level of excellence, they cannot really be compared as "who's better," for instance take Terry Bozzio and Dave Weckl, both are highly gifted and amazing drummers, but they both have a great technique, but also have extremely different styles, and each should be taken as that... Musicians don't have to be university trained either, but they do need to know their shit, you mention Vai, Petrucci, and Portnoy, as musicians who never graduated, that's true, but I'm sure they still know and respect the idea of music theory. You say that music came before rules, well, that may be true, if you're talking about ancient tribal music, but, Western music as it has become is based around certain tonal principles that should never be forgotten, and someone who wants to learn about music needs to learn these principles before thinking they are any kind of "musician" Sorry for my ramblings, but I get really peeved at the idea that music should be just some thrown together mess, that's why I'm into more progressive metal and jazz, because most of them know what they're doing, if you want no rules, or think that "anything goes," then go pick up the latest #1 CD or some other shit that some popular band comes out with. I understand that a die-hard DLR-era fan of the band would want to hear that. And if I was at the show, I wouldn't mind sitting through it. I was just upset that they chose it air on the MTV show instead of something I like better, which more often than not will come from the Van Hagar era. Just an opinion. Personally, it has never been one of my favorite DLR-era songs. I would have much rather heard them do "Dance The Night Away" or "Feel Your Love Tonight," both of which they are apparently playing on this tour as well. It's just a personal preference. > > I think they focused more on the DLR-era material because they weren't able > to do much of it with Sammy at the helm, and because so many fans have been > dying to hear it. I respect that. But they're basically doing to the Van Hagar stuff what they did to the DLR stuff when Sammy was in the band. I just wish they could strike a happy medium. I've got start checking my e-mail earlier. Just to clarify: it's my understanding that if the writing credits plainly list Ptacek-D man- Syrinx, then you're right: each gets a third. But if the credits are more specific, such as "Music: Ptacek, Syrinx" and "Lyrics: D-man" then things change since the automatic default of the courts is 50% for the music and 50% for the lyrics. Thus, barring any internal agreement to the contrary, Ptacek and Syrinx would have to split the 50% music credit (25% a piece) and D-man gets to keep his full 50%. > As far as the Van Halen equal division concept - that is the other extreme. The best way to do it is on a > song by song basis. Yeah - it can get to business like - but it will help > from egos raging and feelings being hurt later on. It depends on what type of band you're in. If you're in Phish, then it probably is fair to say that each band member is contributing more or less equally. But since I'm not Trey, nor do I ever want to be anything close to Trey, I'm just talking out of my ass. The song-to-song basis is the most rational approach, but it has a tendency to leave a member or two in the dust while the main writer(s) speeds away in a new sports car. Okay, that rarely happens. But you get my point. One way to make the playing field more level is that if you're going to do the song-to-song basis, give the non-writers in the band a little bit bigger percentage of the merchandising. That way everybody gets to drive away in a new sports car (yeah, right). Some people advocate giving the non-writers a bigger cut from live performances, but I don't think that's fair since everybody busts their ass during a show. But it's been done before. comes up with the initial spark for the song is AUTOMATICALLY > entitled to 51% of the writing credits because that is the hardest part. I > don't care if it is one riff - it is the first riff then 51%. That's a little rough, don't you think? Sure, they're providing the creative springboard, but haven't you been in situations where you present something to a band and by the end of the session your initial idea has changed keys, changed time signatures, changed tempos, etc? Then really how much of what you end up with is your own idea? I'm not saying your 51% idea is wrong or bad, it's not the way I would do things. And I give credit when a drummer comes up with his > drum part because the drummer always gets screwed. Now THAT'S the way I would do things. But then again I'm a bit biased. Message-ID: I must say i agree with Kevin mostly, but in some points i do agree with the other guy.. i mean, in early american blues music, there were slaves playing music.. they obviously had no training, they had to play music from their heats and souls. the style that they were playing had a unique sound "then", it's also the basis for most music we hear today. BUT they what they played sounded melodic, had some FORM to it, not just mindless wanking on any note that your finger touches. they did a lot of experimenting to form other variations like jazz (which i love), but even as wild as some jazz can be, they always fallow some music basis. As far as slayer goes, and bands like that, the songs are cool, heavy, but the guitar solos, atleast the older guitar solos were so noisey, and horrible sounding i could never stand it.. some people will say that that was the point of the music, i don't think so, because when the one guy decided to learn to play guitar on the SITA CD he actually tried to stay in key, and not sound horrible, BUT he kept his unique stlye of wanking, it's just more in key now, and not a screaming Eb over an E5 chord. Also, i agree with the other dude, who origionally posted saying "I can't imagine somebody wanting to play a musical instrument but not want to write music." i know people who are great at an instrument, but completely suck musically, they just have no want at all to write any form of music, they just play whatever they are told, or whatever cover is popular, that to me is just wasted talent. Kevin i think you probably misunderstood him, i don't think he was saying that he can't imagine someone wanting to play something that they didn't write, i think he was more saying never writing your own music. bleh, Rocky ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 May 1998 10:01 +0200 From: "=?iso-8859-1?q?R=D6NNQVIST,?= GREGER" To: email_address_removed Subject: Hollow Years Message-ID: --- Inkommet fr=E5n INFODATA.SVA0193 +46(0)670-16060 98-05-05 10.01 -> ytsejam(a)ax.com Hello!
