When they crank the amp loud to show everyone they suck, that's a different story. But then again, you have to turn an amp to a certain level to see if it is worth buying. So, I may get annoyed by them - but I am sure people are laughing at me when I start playing some Savatage and DT songs as well as some originals to check out equipment. They must see me as a "wanker". As far as my original post on what I look for in a bassist, I was OBVIOUSLY joking. It would be something I would say to a bassist, but I'd be joking. I'd say it to anyone in the band, AS A JOKE. Haven't received a dirty look yet. Now if you want to talk vocalists - I could go off :o) see a happy face. Its there for the sense of humor impaired. And as far as the SOLOW fiasco, I was thinking the same thing - but only because the word SOLOW was repeated quite often - bringing attention to it. It didn't bother me enough to complain though. A private message would have been the best way to handle it. The funny thing is - everytime I saw SOLOW - I thought "So Low". And that thread went SO LOW, I had to laugh. Personally, when people correct my grammar (which is atrocious), I thank them. I consider emails informal enough to slide however. It would be like getting a note passed in class and sending it back with a grade. In other words, unnecessary. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 May 1998 23:13:36 EDT From: JKorby1973 To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 3833 Message-ID: In a message dated 98-05-03 22:19:59 EDT, you write: << P.S. With all the shit alturnative and ska bands out there as the "popular" music, you can expect most guitarists influenced by these bands to be sparsely talented. I'm a high school freshman, so I guess I should know, this kid brought in his guitar and the other kids were amazed that he could play the solo in "Smells like Teen Spirit" (ooooh incredibly hard!). a few moments later I asked the kid if I could play and started playing the begining of "Scarred" and he thought I was fucking Hendrix, even though that part isn't that hard to play, but if you've just been fed non-talented playing your whole life, of course when you see someone playing something that requires some skill, you're probably going to put him on a very high pedistal. On to your second remark, it is pretty much untrue, seeing as how Portnoy is quite a showman at their concerts (as many of you may know) and he obviously, along with Myung, Sherinean, and LaBrie, do get the credit they deserve. Rush, even though I am a guitarist, I always see Geddy and Neil getting more credit than Alex, even though Alex is a pretty kick ass player in his own right. third remark I will have to dissagree with you also. In Rush, the credits always to to Geddy and Alex as the musical part of the song. (I couldnt give an example with DT, as the whole band is credited to the song's music, then again, that says it right there.) Thank you, Chris Merlo already corrected me on that information, a lot more graciously than you did, I might add. > You would see that if you would take your own advice and read the liner > notes- besides, why would a band put a guitar solo piece on their album > that was played from a different guitarist?! Going back to my original post, I said quite specifically "I don't have [the liner notes] in front of me..." I was simply posting what I remembered reading in them. I was in a lab at school at the time, 20 miles from my CD collection. What I remembered seeing was a note after the song that the Intro was played by Dweezil Zappa, which is precisely what I said in my post. It was my mistake for thinking that 'intro' was refering to Flight of the Wounded Bumble Bee. Fact: The liner notes say "Intro/Outro solos: Dweezil Zappa" Fact: Flight of the Wounded Bumble Bee is *NOT* a separate track on the CD. It is part of He-Man Woman Hater, and could therefore be concidered an 'intro.' Fact: "Flight of the Wounded Bumble Bee -Nuno" appears *before* He-Man Woman Hater is listed in the CD booklet, and looks more like a caption to the artwork than part of the notes for that song. Fact: When I saw Extreme live, they played He-Man Woman Hater, but *skipped* the intro, which could easily make one think that Nuno wasn't the one playing it in the first place. When it comes right down to it, I made a mistake. Without the liners as reference, I made an assumption which turned out to be wrong. It happens to the best of us, and it is no reason to resort to the level of immaturity you demonstrated in your response. However, I must thank you. Your post did an excellent job of self-flaming, far superior to anything I could have come up with myself. h t t p : / / w w w . p r o g n o s i s . c o m / g a b b o / | Pat Griffin email_address_removed Reality Squared Design | h t t p : / / w w w . p r o g n o s i s . c o m / g a b b o / ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 May 1998 14:06:13 +1000 From: "Rainer" To: Subject: Choosing an instrument Message-ID: <001101bd7711$fdd9ca20$message_id_removed.su.OZ.AU> Someone said: "Every fully formed, fully functional human being is capable of playing any instrument, given the proper amount of time and effort" I don't agree with this, but it's just my opinion. Sure anyone can learn the "basics" of any instrument, but I believe no matter how much time you spend practicing certain things are down to genetics (this may sound silly but think about it). Some people I've played with just don't have what it takes. Either they don't have good ears (they don't have any natural musical ability) whereas some people have an inherint natural musical ability and can pick things up quickly and know how to go about practicing and learning (the latter can be taught but the former can't) or you can just tell by the way they play the instrument (even if taught the correct manner, they say it doesn't feel right, it's just not the way their joints work and they'll have to find their own way). For example Yngwie, has obviously been playing for a long time, but given the same amount of time and the same practicing regiment would your average person be as good technically (I'm not talking about being a good guitarist as that is a matter of opinion, but technique can almost be measured on a relative scale such as this guy can play faster and cleaner than the other guy)? I'm also interested in attending Berklee. Do any of you have any opinions on Berklee and other similar institutions such as the Musicians Institute? Remember it's just my opinion, so don't get your knickers in a knot. I'd like to add my opinion on the subject: The ultimate goal for any musician on any instrument should be to achieve the highest level of technique, creativity and overall musical value in their playing as possible (especially in progressive music). A problem, as I see it, is that there aren't nearly as many bass players out there looking for bands that fit this description as there are guitarists or drummers. Sadly, many bass players out there are actually, in fact, failed guitarists. Why? Because bass is considered less glamorous so fewer talented people devote themselves to it as a first choice. That makes those who do a very valuable commodity. I learned long ago not to take good, devoted bass players for granted. If you've got one - hold on to him/her. I heard a song from their new album last night, and for the first time ever, Slayer is trying to do something different! It was still heavy as hell, but much groovier and with a slight punk influence. Tom's voice still gives it away as a Slayer song, but if it weren't for that I wouldn't have placed it as Slayer. It's about time they tried to diversify themselves, but I'm sure we're gonna hear the old "sell out" talk. It's not as drastic a change as Load was, but it's quite different. According to the 'Reaching Horizons' homepage http://angra.digitalchainsaw.com/ (which has recently moved). Almost everything except the keyboards are being recorded in London. Andre is recording those in Germany, but will return to London to do the vocals and final mixing with producer Chris Tsangarides. The band did an interview with the fan club before they set off to do the recording and you can read it on the site. (Look for it on the 'news' page) To quote Andre Matos "But this time we were more concerned about our roots as a heavy metal band - this will be a heavy metal album. But it'll also be a mix of what Angels Cry and Holy Land were." They do sound heavier in the live environment, but the new songs they played in Bourges and Paris sounded more along the lines of Iron Maiden to me. Chris Tsangarides worked on the Judas Priest 'Painkiller' album long with other metal disks and likes working at the Metropolis Studio, based in Chiswick, West London http://www.demon.co.uk/studiobase/metro/index.html He also produced Yngwie Malmsteen's new album (e.n.: Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in flat E minor Op. 1: Millenium), as well as Ozzy Osbourne, Bruce Dickinson and Helloween.
