No this isn't going to be a play by play, note by note, drive by shooting rendition of the cd, but more of the experience, you could say ... Before delving into this whole thing, I want to quote Solomon Short (David Gerrold) in that "Nobody is entitled to an opinion. An opinion if something you need when you don't have all the facts. When you've got all the facts, you don't need an opinion." Wise man. (: So, we have New Millenium. One of the most exciting and sense-tingling experiences of a new Dream Theater album is finding out how they decide to open "this" one. Since I missed the Awake tour (Seattle sold out and I was oblivious to the fact that tickets were even on sale), I had absolutely no idea what kind of differences DS would add to the mix of DT music. So the bucket of cold-water enlightenment woke me up real quick like with the intro to the first track on this collection of tracks. It was so different from anything I could have possibly imagined. Being "boot"less, I had no clue what to expect from any of the new tracks. An avid fan of electronic music for a number of years, the keyboards completely blew me away. A lot of this stuff may have been old school for a number of you all, but this was just amazing for me to hear. As a bass player myself, I could practically envision that chapman stick being played and sighed in content and let the song take me for a ride. I must admit that I was overly anxious to get to the instrumental. So I skipped right to Hell's Kitchen to go on another ride. Perhaps my fault in music is that I feel it instead of sitting down and trying to analyze it. Each and every song on the entire album had aspects of different styles that I have been nuts about thorughout my life. I feel sorry for anyone who feels the need to slam Anna Lee because it doesn't live up to their standards or expectations. I lower my hat to those who felt that Trial of Tears wasn't quite the epic story that they expected. Then I shrug, laugh, and hit repeat and live the experience all over again. I guess it is all a matter of what you want to get out of the music you listen to. *shrug* There is a complexity in nearly every song that will keep you going for hours (i.e. road trips are perfect times for these cds (: ). Take care, ya'll. Feel the music. -= george =- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 19:02:17 -0400 (EDT) From: Lars Hellsten To: email_address_removed Subject: LTE, Grades Message-ID: Oh, BTW, my grades were what I thought before I got LTE. Ever since I first listened to LTE, however, I haven't been able to get back into DT, and especially FII. I can still get into LTL, TTT, and some other stuff like STM, SDV, etc. But I listened to FII all the way through last night for the first time since I got LTE, and kept wanting to push the skip button during every song except HY... even TOT and LITS. So it's back to listening to LTE constantly until further notice. Has anyone else had this problem of LTE spoiling them? I'm afraid all of you "youngsters" are way off. Try Louie Bellson with The Benny Goodman Orchestra! This was back in the late 40's, and no, I was not around then, I'm ONLY 40! But any drummer worth his (or her) weight knows of Louie Bellson. Louie was a tap dancer as a child and after he became a drummer he realized that he could "tap dance" on the bass drum pedals...and so another era was born. Now who was the first ROCK band to use double bass drums? I,m quessing, but either Ginger Baker with Cream or Carmine Appice with Vannilla Fudge. It's general admission, so there's no need to panic. :) I'll have full details posted on my dt web page within a few hours. Oh, yeah, tickets are $20.50 cash, $21.50 check or credit card, and there's a $2.50 per order (not per ticket) charge for placing an order over the phone. So Ken's and my tickets (paid w/ credit card) were $45.50. Very pretty song. #Burning my Soul first C, now B = Great for headbanging, but the chorus leave the impression that i've heard it somewhere else... a little cliche. #Hell's Kitchen first A, now B = A little repetitive. #Lines in the Sand first B-, now A+ = lighty long at first listening, but afterwards showed itself one of the top points of FII. #Take Away my Pain first C, now B = Good harmony an great solo. #Just Let me Breathe first and now C = I don't know, it seems like a song lost in space or something... #Anna Lee first and now B- = in one word: cheesy... #Trial of Tears first C, now B Myung pieces are always few, but good. Message-ID: Hi Gang - I must say that this is a VERY refreshing thread... thanks for throwing this one out there, Mike! I'll try to keep this brief, since there have been several posts on this, but thusfar, as I'm sure is the case with many out there, I 100% agree with some of the reviews, but totally disagree with others. And now, a synopsis: The Biggest and Best "Agers": New Millennium, Lines In the Sand, and Just Let Me Breathe. I wasn't too nuts about NM when I first heard it, but damn Mike, you were so right in saying that this is song KILLS now! :-) Probably the biggest overall gainer, NM went from toleration to being programmed on "repeat"! Believe it or not, I actually wasn't too crazy about LITS the first few times either. My first exposure to this was live in Poughkeepsie, and this really didn't do anything for me for quite a while. After repeated CD listens, I can't get enough of this bad boy now. Breathtakingly awesome. :-) Same goes for JLMB. Didn't like it much in Poughkeepsie, but the studio version makes my ears BLEED! And that's a GOOD thing..... :-) Methinks it may be the decibal level that the song MUST be played on that's doing it..... Hmmmmmm..... Still Killer after All This Time: Trial Of Tears, Burning My Soul, Peruvian Skies. ToT was and still is my fave track on the CD. Definitely in my top 5 alltime DT tunes, I have NEVER gotten sick of this one. D-Man, you hit the nail right on the head about BMS in Poughkeepsie! I nearly shat myself the first time I heard it. Still love the song (I think I like the way DT split HK and BMS on the album better than the original combo of the two), but nothing will top that first time. ;-) Peruvian Skies rocked in concert, and rox even more now. That ending.... The Groove That Maks Your Booty Move!!! :-) Not Doing As Well: Take Away My Pain, Anna Lee, Hollow Years. TAMP and AL both started with a head of steam, but now I'm tiring of them a bit. I too totally love the demo of TAMP... why they changed it, I'll never understand. Hollow Years started as a masterpiece, but it's been downgraded to an almost masterpiece. Overall, I still really like these 3 songs, though. Never Liked It, Still Don't: You Not Me. Sorry, I've tried, I really have. But, You OR Me is just lightyears better than the album version. This is the only song on the CD I've ever skipped over intentionally. In Conclusion: I think that overall, (don't flame me to death... please!) this album has aged with me better than any of their previous ones. (Maybe it's just due the incredible overplaying that IaW and Awake got.) I may go out on a limb and say that this may be their best album to date. It is certainly their most diverse. I had huge hopes for FII and, with the exception of YNM, it has not let me down in the least. Okay, so this wasn't so brief. :-) Laterz....... Matt T.
