Bad hazex. Bad hazex. That's just Something You Don't Do. CD of the Day: Payne's Gray - Kadath Decoded Kevin Madden Detroit Red Wings 1996-97 Stanley Cup Champions First Round of the Playoffs vs. Phoenix Coyotes ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Apr 1998 20:15:15 -0400 From: Deedlit To: email_address_removed Subject: relevant vs. non-relevant Message-ID: In my Perception class today (and Monday), we discussed music perception. There are so many wacky things that go on top of all the really neat fundamental plus harmonics (timbre) things...like the tritone illusion, the octave illusion, and many other crazy things. The octave illusion and another illusion (courtesy of Diana Deutsch) relate directly back to visual perception (the Gestalt Theory of Similarity and also Proximity), which relates strongly to biological perception, which relates directly to evolutionary biology, and so-on. What I'm trying to say is twofold: 1) if you're interested in music (seems like at least everyone on here likes music enough to like DT), there are many relevant topics you can discuss that are relevant to music in general, if not directly to the reason this list exists. 2) if you're REALLY into music, you should really check out some of the psychological and biopsychological research out there--it's so cool! Diana has a book out, and there are many other famous researchers out there. :) So, anyway, we can talk about Sony (a key manufacturer of items we use to LISTEN to DT), and we can talk about other bands (influenced by, influencing, similar to, or nothing like DT, because it's all music). Hell, we should be allowed to talk about classical music here too because, I can guarantee, most if not all of the DT members have played classical music in their pasts, and probably were influenced by such composers as J.S. Bach. We can talk about concerts, where we experience music from DT or other bands, and so-on. Don't be so restrictive in what you think we should talk about because, guaranteed, we can relate most of what we talk about on this list back to music in general, if not DT directly. Hell, why did I start to play guitar? John Petrucci man, that's all I have to say. I could have stuck with playing just the oboe, but I didn't. Anyway, I'm going to climb down from my lofty soapbox at this point. Go ahead and flame me, but I really don't think we should be so limiting of our topics of discussion. If a discussion gets out of hand, we may want to tone it down, but heck, I'm game for chatting about a lot of stuff. Have a splendid day, Erica Bonomi (who should be writing a paper about stuff she doesn't care about in the least) ps: I forget my modes...I suck at theory. This time I bought the CD from CDnow.. And the end of Pull Me Under, it is very brutally cut off without any kind of ending... Is it /supposed/ to be like that? I don't think so.. It just suddenly stops and then Another Day starts.. I think it is rather too much of a coincidence that there should be something wrong TWICE with the I&W cd.. was there something wacky going on with the prodiction or something?? *pouts* I&W being my fave cd (because of Under A Glass Moon and Another Day) I would like it to be -complete- at least :) CIAO!
