The 12,000 capacity Sydney Entertainment Centre was just about full and from the open riffs of 'Unchained' to the closing 'Jump' the band had the audience eating out of there hand :) The whole show was brilliant, from sound, lights and band performance. Highlights were many: Alex's drum solo and performance in general, Gary singing and stage presence, until tonight I wasn't a fan, he won me over tonight. EVH proving that he still is 'the' guitar hero. The setlist was choker full of classics including: Meanstreet, Dance The Night Away and Mike Anthony on lead vocals for 'Somebody Get Me A Doctor'. Surprises: Gary's singing, the classics and a loud audience. In all the best concert I have ever seen ever :) graham PS the gig was filmed by MTV america. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Apr 1998 11:22:06 EDT From: AEllis1222 To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Disgusted at DT. I saw them in Amsterdam last week and the show was excellent. Too bad some people started screaming/grunting etc. during all the slower parts from APSoG. If someone on this list happens to be one of them, you suck! One guy started even started stage-diving, and as far as I could tell nobody really bothered to catch him. The combination of metal and progressive rock is what makes Dream Theater Dream Theater. A lot of bands play progressive metal, but none have the special mix and chemistry that the boys in DT have, IMO. If DT didn't have a metal side, chances are I would never have gotten into them. Likewise, if they were limited to straightforward metal, I wound never have liked them as much as I do. The heavy side CANNOT be removed from DT without much of the magic being removed, IMO. Just like the lighter side could not be removed without much of the magic being removed. But, I do agree with the original poster's wishes for a heavier album next time (though I loved FII). But that's just personal preference. And as far as the comment about there being plenty of metal bands out there--so? There are plenty of fast food Mexican places out there but that doesn't mean Taco Bell should shut down. Some of us prefer hearing DT play metal than hearing a lot of those "other" bands play metal, in the same way some prefer a taco from Taco Bell than from one of those "other" Mexican joints. Saying that the new stuff is better than DSOTM is an insult to that album. It was the best album PF has ever done, and probably the best they ever will do. TDB, while a good album, cannot compete. MLOR was pretty much a solo album for Gilmour. Same goes for TFC and Roger Waters. If you all think Pulse is good, you should check out the Delicate Sound of Thunder Video (not the album). It is probably the best live video I have ever seen, including a very orgasmic version of GGITS (Much better than on Pulse because the backup singers SUCKED on TDB tour.) and a great version of One Slip. I happen to like everything Floyd does and now I think they are a band again with Richard Wright back in the fold again. I just hope they can make an album faster than five years. What did you smoke before posting this, my friend? This album...err...CD is JUST as heavy as the rest, alot of people are knocking it before they try it. Tunes like JLMB, LITS and New Millenium are plenty heavy, if you're looking for Images & Words Part II then become an AC/DC fan. Each new release by DT shows more maturity and better arranging, IMHO. I wouldn't trade this release for the world. It just seems like everytime they put something new out, it gets harder for me to listen to its predecessor. Seriously, how many times did you listen to it? 5 times, maybe? Good music stands the test of time, and many times it's not quite understood until you've heard it 20, maybe 30 times. Then things start to click. Give it a few more listens, I'm SURE you'll see what I mean. You, yourself, appear to be a big collector of your material, as well as other artists you enjoy. Why is it not possible to sell soundboard copies of your own shows, through an independant, self-created label? If you could offer a catalog of all your shows, you would put the money in your OWN pocket, and the fans could secure MINT copies of any show they wanted, which would be a MUCH cooler momento (in my eyes) than a hat or T-Shirt. This would eliminate all those bootleggers who sell inferior copies of your material (HELL! I'm one of them), as well as allow us tapers the opportunity to FULLY enjoy a DT show (There's NOTHING worse than getting a tape of a show where the taper was screaming into his own mike!). Any chance of that ever happening? If an act such as yourselves ever pioneered that, it could be revolutionary to the music industry. Please give me your thoughts on it. Hey CP, read back a few jams, you might have missed it. MP came on the Ytsejam bitching just as much as you, because the cancellation was out of their control. James came down with something (larengitis? sp? grammer? ; ) and couldnt talk, so Mike tried to get the club to let them do an instrumental gig, a "LTE" if you will. But they wouldnt. Mike is as pissed as you, so dont be disgusted at DT. > Anyone sympathesise with me? Sure, but just because the local Santa Ana gig was cancelled doesnt mean I think the band are jerks, purposefully robbing you of the show you deserve. Come on man, think about it, the band loves playing for us nutso fans (or at least MP does : ). They would have loved to play for you just as much as you would have loved hearing them. So chill out, they will come around again sometime. Im thinking I might actually take the plunge and try and find that Vanden Plas album. I figure if they are playing with Angra (who ROCK), they're probably pretty good. And I heard an mp3 on Mosh's site, and liked what was there...The Rainmaker, if Im not mistaken.
