Every song (including the ones on the album) was demoed. That's just how the system works. Then they picked 11 of them to record somewhere nicer than JP's basement (or wherever they did the demos), and that became the album. The songs that weren't selected were never (at least, as far as I know, and maybe MP could clarify if I'm wrong) re-recorded after they were demoed. >> ****That is all correct, except for the fact that all the demos were recorded at our rehearsal studio at the time in New Jersey.... Message-ID: <000001bd6bec$b1e264e0$5c16a2d1@james> Maybe I missed the sarcasm but.... I would say that almost everything they did from The Wall and prior was the best music Floyd ever made. Not to say that The Final Cut, Momentary Lapse of Reason, and The Division Bell (probably the best post-Waters album) are not excellent albums, but personally I think the pre-Final Cut albums are the best. Even David Gilmour has said that Wish you Were Here was his favorite album, along with Richard Wright. Floyd got lucky with the DSOTM? I don't think drums have ever been TABBED, but there seems to be a standard for representing drums in STANDARD NOTATION. I'm a guitarist, but I try to read Modern Drummer (and Keyboard and Bass Player) any chance I get. I thought it was strange of Rocky to say that it's "not that hard to figure out what someone is playing on drums". True - it is hard to mistake a bass drum for a snare, but it is also to be fully aware of ALL the possible drums (including PERCUSSION). When I put drums on the Drum Machine to play along to, sometimes I don't know what the hell type of percussion is being played by the drummer. If anything is lacking in my personal transcription process, it's being able to figure out what instruments are producing uncommon rock sounds. In other words, if Mike Portnoy decides to bring in some percussion he is going to possibly overdub - I'll find the instrument by simply scrolling through all the possible percussion instruments. I haven't progressed to the point of instantly recognizing percussion sounds. So, that has been one of the biggest barriers I have to overcome in transcribing. I would also love to be able to pick out ALL the parts in an orchestra score. For those of you who think transcribing is a waste of time, you obviously don't realize the benefit this provides to your own personal compositions. It becomes so much easier figuring out how to PRODUCE the sounds you hear in your head when you realize what instrument you are hearing. It also helps when you hear a sound that doesn't come from ANY insturment - at which point you will have to go VAI and make the sound possible. And know, I'm not a huge Vai fan. I just recognize genius when I hear it. ------------------------------ Date: 4/19/1998 20:8 From: Dave To: undisclosed-recipients:; Subject: Stereo equip. (NDTC)...I know,I know. Sorry. Message-ID: --==pw_boundary== Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Hi guys (and gals;), This stereo equipment thread is of particular interest to me, so maybe I could get some help/opinions before it gets dropped. The only home stereo system I've ever owned is a JVC micro/mini system that does a good job in my small bedroom. However, since I'll be moving into my own house soon, I'd like to get something nice. What I'm looking at now is; Yamaha: 70 watts/channel for front, 35 watts/channel for 2 rear, 8 DSP modes receiver. Boston Acoustics micro series surround sound rear speakers. Boston Acoustics front speakers- 2-way towers (not too big). Boston Acoustics 3-way center channel speaker. I want this to sound great with music as well as movies, but I dont know that much about stereo equipment. Could anybody help me with some advice in this area. The sales rep.told me the speakers are matched with each other as well as being matched with the receiver. I've seen packages in Circuit City ads that are less $, but don't seem as nice. This system will run about $1000. Also, is using a subwoofer while listening to CD's a good idea, or are they really only for movies? Sorry this is so long, but I really value the opinions of the people on this list (fellow DT fans). Please give your suggestions on this- privately if you wish. Thanks VERY MUCH! Dave P.S; I can't wait to experience LIVE IN TOKYO on a system like this. --==pw_boundary==-- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Apr 1998 20:11:43 -0400 From: MOUROMTSEV To: YTSEJAM Subject: New Boot CD Review Message-ID: Hello everybody, I have received Open All Night's sample cd "into the great unknown" yesterday and the guys have asked me to post a review of it here. So there we go. Contents: A 13 song compilation including 2 songs by Dream Theater (peruvian skies + under a glass moon) from the 1998 French tour, as well as songs by other bands such as Megadeth, Savatage, Royal Hunt. Sound Quality: Quite amazing. Clear, well-balanced recordings of obviously digital origin. The best audience recordings I've heard so far (and I've heard a lot). Dream Theater, Vanden Plas & Savatage stand out as the best. Artwork: Very nice. High resoultion inlay and full-color CD label. Service: The best part. The CD arrived 6 days after I've sent out the payment. OK, I live in France, but still..... Bottom Line: Counting the days and saving money for Open All Night's upcoming full-show CDs. Keep up the good work guys, Denis B. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Apr 1998 20:23:49 EDT From: Calvin 6S To: email_address_removed Subject: Japanese Goodies Message-ID: If you haven't figured it out by now, Japan has a much wider choice of sheet music and videos from artists WE LIKE, as opposed to artists MOST PEOPLE LIKE. I just received my first order of sheet music from Japan. To give you an idea of what I mean when I say Japan has cooler stuff, I'll list the order I just received: Young Guitar - back issue 10/97 w/ John Petrucci and John Myung on the cover Young Guitar - back issue 9/97 w/ Yngwie Malmsteen on the cover Young Guitar - back issue 5/97 w/ George Lynch on the cover Dream Theater - complete BAND score of the ALBUM "A Change of Seasons" Friedman, Marty - Best of Guitar scores (from Cacophony, solo, and Megadeth) MacAlpine, Tony - Best of Guitar scores (impossible to find guitar transcriptions) Stratovarious - complete BAND score of the album "Episode" Stratovarious - complete BAND score of the album "Visions" I also already had the following Japan tab books Dream Theater - complete BAND score of the album "When Dream and Day Unite" Dream Theater - complete BAND score of the album "Image and Words" Dream Theater - complete BAND score of the album "Awake" as well as various Young Guitar issues. BAND score does in fact mean ALL instruments (including drums) transcribed. Now that I am confident I have found a reliable source to buy Japan tab, I am going to place a SECOND ORDER. I already have a couple of other ytse jammers interested in ordering with me on this one and I would like to know if anyone else is interested in getting Japanese tab. If you are, I am willing to place an order for you also. I will only be doing this ONCE and I will try to do it in no more than 2-3 weeks from now (time to gather, respond, and confirm emails). So I if you are interested, send me a personal email and I will send you my EXACT plan to get the books to you as well as a list I have compiled of available tab (and videos) from Japan. Besides this initial email, I would like to keep this off the ytsejam. I will do it for ANYONE inside the US. I hate to limit it to the US, but it becomes a big hassle to ship out of the US. Too many forms to fill out, as well as large shipping costs. I am trying to keep all this brief and concise, so if you are interested - send me a personal email to email_address_removed. From there we can take care of any other questions and orders. Also keep in mind. I AM NOT A BUSINESS. I am not trying to make a profit here. My only interest is to open a source of hard to obtain material to the ytsejam. Be forewarned, the email you will receive from me will be VERY long. The Japanese catalog will be in .txt format so you can open it in just about any format you prefer. I am going to make a database of all those interested, and the stage in which they are in - but I am starting from scratch as of this email. So if you have shown previous interest, please reiterate your interest with an email to me. I have received so many emails over the past 4 weeks when I first mentioned it that I want to see who is serious still. Please be prepared to provide quick responses. I wouldn't want to hold up the order any longer than it has to be held. It wouldn't be fair to serious orders to wait on slow (possibly not serious) orders. thanks, email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Apr 1998 19:29:52 -0500 (CDT) From: Michael Torres To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Chicago show Message-ID: is anyone going to the chicago show from omaha?? please email privately..thanks MikeT ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Apr 1998 21:03:57 EDT From: The iban To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: My instrument's harder than yours .... and bigger too Message-ID: i wont copy the who message cause it was huge, but i see your point.. it was basically a joke, but literally i have never seen drums tabbed anywhere, i don't read modern drummer magazine, but i can't imagine what the tab for a drum kit would look like, i do a lot of midi work, so ofcourse i've seen it on a musical scale, and pretty much got to know which is which as far as snare bass hihats and cymbals all go, i dont really dabble in the extra stuff like glockenspiel or those other weird german sounding percussive instruments. i was just imagining in my head a drum kit the size of MP's and each piece having a line, i dont know its probably something like atleast a 20 piece set, and a musical staff only having 5 lines, but spaces and sharps to deal with, i cant imagine a tab with 20+ lines... bah is anyone even reading this far? i know i never do, i'll just stop Rocky ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Apr 1998 22:39:56 -0400 (EDT) From: Michael Burstin To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Pink Floyd Message-ID: Well, wanted to chime in w/ my opinion on PF... Let's put it to a Ytsejam vote :) I cast my vote for more DT METAL!! This brings me to a burning question. Okay, look at the progression of albums...I&W was heavier than WDADU, Awake was heavier than I&W, ACOS was arguably heavier than Awake (if not heavier, then definitely on the same level), and then FII is not a heavy album. My question is, was the label pressure so great that you guys had to go more pop and/or less heavy, or was it a collective decision to go that route without much label pressure? Gee.. this is the point where we're gonna fight! :-) Ding! First round! :-) Seriously, I prefer more progressive stuff than metal material. Of course, preference doesn't mean that I *only* want to listen to progressive rock, but there's plenty of bands doing heavy metal (in many, many, many senses: black metal, death metal, progressive metal, melodic heavy metal, doom metal, blue metal :-) , pink metal :-), gay metal, lesbic metal :-) and so on) and I'm still trying to find a band that does purely progressive rock these days. Perhaps most bands do metal music because that's what the kids wanna hear. Last year I got the phenomenal "Saints and Sinners" QR bootleg (off the PL tour), which I'd read about on the Jam. I trust your musical opinions, so please tell me. My musical taste includes QR, DT (of course), My Dying Bride, Deep Purple, Rainbow, guitarists (Becker, Malmsteen, Vai, Satriani, Stump). If there are any phenomenal bootlegs I don't know about, tell me what their titles are. Phenomenal bootlegs in my opinion are "S&S" (QR), "Guitar Killer" (Satriani), "As 6 1/2" (Vai), "Kiss the Sky" (Malmsteen) and DT's "Lost in the Sky". If you know of excellent bootlegs of bands you are not sure I am into, just tell me as well :-) Or maybe there's a "guide to excellent bootlegs" site on the net somewhere? Cheers...thanks for your time.
