I just purchased my first Dream Theater albums late last year, and rapidly purchased several more after that. I brought them home on break from school and played them for my mom. She really got into Peruvian Skies, when I first picked up FII (at a used CD store in Shreveport, LA for only $8.99, I figured a die hard fan discarded it, someone who expected another I&W or Awake). Then when I went with my mom to get my hair cut during Spring Break I was talking about the music I liked. I told the people there I liked Dream Theater (the women there had not heard of them), and then my mom says "They're really good". Wow, my parents are cool. Well, I did start listening to music with my Dad, and we would listen to Led Zeppelin, Cream, and Black Sabbath on vinyl. My dad also liked Dream Theater, but he will not express it as much as my mom does. Just thought the Moms and DT thread was interesting. There's always SOMEONE who starts feeling all guilty about bootlegs and has to make it sound like fans are ripping off the band by buying them. Look, you're not ripping the band off!!!!! Fans who buy bootlegs generally have everything the band has in print already. Bands also don't usually print a cd of every single tour they do (unless it's Floyd we're talking about) but fans seem to want recordings of each stageshow. That's where bootlegs provide a valuable service to fans and band alike. It allows fans to keep a concert on cd whereas they wouldnt otherwise, and the band doesnt have to always be pushing the record company to let them do a live release. So BUY THE BOOTLEGS!!! Enjoy them. Don't let someone make you feel guilty about enjoying the music of your favorite band. Robert ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Apr 1998 17:04:41 -0700 From: "Paul T. In a word: Wow. The opening band, Mike Keneally and Beer for Dolphins, were a pleasant surprise - a very tight group for only having rehearsed a few times together before playing this show (according to Mike). They were very dynamic in general, and I thought I could hear a little Crimson as well as Echolyn (!) in there at times (others who were there can correct me on this if you disagree). Anyway, I picked up their CD after the show and am pretty impressed... when I talked to Mike after the show, he says they mostly play around the L.A. area, but have considered plans to tour on a limited basis... we'll see. Not to mention > their artistic integrity. Think about that..............take the time Okay I thought about it....and came to the same conclusion I did the last time I heard this issue brought up. The only way you are STEALING money from a band with a bootleg, is if that bootleg is a copy of a legitimate commercial release. If I buy a CD-R copy of Awake, then yes, I am stealing money from the band. Most of the material being discussed here, however, is not available commercially anywhere, and never *will* be available commercially anywhere. Therefore, the band was never going to make any money from it, and no one is *stealing* anything from them. Keep in mind that I mean this from a strictly monetary point of view. The morals of actually taping the shows is another issue altogether. And since you brought it up, how exactly do you see bootlegging as having any effect on DT's "artistic integrity"? You've got me baffled with that one. -- _____Pat Sullivan_____________________________________ E-Mail: email_address_removed WWW: http://www.just-like.nu IRC: DDictator ICQ: 2049374 ______________________________________________________ Join the YCSRF today! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Apr 1998 21:30:36 -0400 (EDT) From: Michael Burstin To: email_address_removed Subject: enough already Message-ID: come on, enough... first we get rehash 423412312.4 of the Bahr wars, which of course now lead to the "boots are bad for a band" vs those of us who like live stuff... enough, please let it stop, let it all end... You Or Me is like, twice as good as YNM, which in itself is not a bad song, although it far from the greatest on the album. YOM(hee hee, yom....) is a lot better. But enough of that, the guys know what they're doing and it's not my place to nag them about it. I *do* want to say, though, that The Way It Used To Be is a great song, and I don't understand why it was not released as the first single. I think it would have gone a lot further than Hollow Years, BMS, or YNM. It would have needed some hefty editing to bring it down from 7 something minutes, but I can't help think that this wouldhave been the song that brought all the Dave Matthew fans, Radiohead fans, basically mainstream rock fans heading to the DT divider at Sam Goody. It's a real catchall. does anybody else have bass dropout at the beginning of BMS on this CD? My Sony Ass-man, with its so-called quote/unquote "MEGABASS" can't seem to handle anything in the lower range. Listening to BMS right now...hey they should play it like this at all the concerts. they haven't at any that I've been to. I like Mike's funky echo in the chorus. I fuggin hate Sony products. I think they build them preset for all the wires to melt at a specific time just after the warranty. I'll kill 'em all, the marriot eating, ticketmaster buying, aol using punks. (no offense, Mike. I want your ISP to burn in hell. You don't mind, do you?) Ok...ok...I'm burning my soul. I'm burning my soul. it's cool. I'm calm.
