This is an incredible, brain - mashingly twistedly wonderful CD that reminds me of QR's "Rage For Order" crossed with an audio rendition of Orwell's "1984." There are Fates and Mindcrime elements as well. A thoroughly impressive debut, but a word of warning - it's anything but instant. This album should neatly remove your head and neck, right at the shoulders. I saw him at The Blue Note in Columbia, MO about a month ago. I was expecting some poetry and all that kind of stuff, which would've been okay with me, but it was more akin to seeing a stand up comedian, only better. I remember he came by the University of Miami campus back in 1993, and I had no interest in going because well...it was Henry Rollins, and had no idea what his spoken word performances were about. However, a friend of mine went and later told me that it was pretty cool. I made a mental note to try and catch one of his shows in the future if I ever had the chance. September 1996 at Univerity of Florida was my chance, and boy am I glad I went. Henry Rollins is a great speaker and story teller, recounting events in his life with humor and making somewhat of a "lesson" out of it. I don't think I ever laughed so hard in my life. Definitely check him out. Oh, and to toss my two pennies in on another thread: I think that Digital Ruin does in the form of mechanized prog metal what Angra has done with Brazilian prog metal, and what S-X has done for neo-classical prog metal....progressed it farther than anyone else has to date. It is good stuff. I think it is what QR could have sounded like, had they gone in a more RFO direction after RFO, but still gone with a concept album. It does tend to sound busy with all of the different VO's they have from various places, but it is a concept album, and a pretty nifty one, at that. I use these quite frequently when I sign guestbooks, or send email to companies... anytime I think that my actual address may be misused or sold to spammers. For instance, when I downloaded my last copy of RealPlayer, I left an email addy of email_address_removed, and when I signed the SymphonyX Edge of Forever guestbook, I left email_address_removed as my e-mail addy. The purpose of this is to see which sites do send spam. Today I've received several unsolicited e-mails to email_address_removed, which means that the owner of the site is most likely offering the email addresses of the people on his guestbook to whoever wants them. These mails have all been acceptable by me, because they're from members of prog bands or prog site webmasters (I actually know a couple of em, but they know me by another e-mail address) and are advertising prog cds and prog sites, but I am very upset about how they got my address. I would happily have signed up for MOST of these people's mailing lists, but would do so WILLINGLY, not unwittingly. This is either enormously bad netiquette on the part of this webmaster, or an amazing coincidence that several people are mailing to the same list of names, all with this particular form of my address on them. When I signed the Edge of Forever guestbook, there was no mention of my email address being offered for any other purpose but for people who hit the guestbook to be able to contact me, if for some strange reason they felt they ought to. So I'm warning you all now, if you aren't interested in being spammed, do not sign the Edge of Forever guestbook. Joe D. inquired: >Is anyone familiar with Glass Hammer? What/who are they like? >Should I check them out? (I like Symphony X, Stratovarius, Shadow >Gallery..... all the usual stuff ;-]) 1) Hell yes, 2) Rush/Yes/ELP style prog, 3) HELL YES. I've been a fan of Glass Hammer's ever since I saw them perform live at Dragon*Con back in 1994. They are fantastic performers -- it was like the first time I saw Rush live. They are a majestic orchestral/symphonic prog band, with lots of keyboards, several vocalists, and amazing talent. Some have called them similar to Yes, ELP, and Rush. They have several albums out: "Journey of the Dunadan" -- Concept album based on Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings". Amazing stuff. Lots of old-style keyboards (Hammond, Moog, mellotron), bass guitar, tons of vocal harmonies, walls of synth sound, and outstanding songwriting. This is a disc to listen to over and over. The sound is a bit quiet (you'll have to turn your system up a bit), because Steve and Fred were just getting the hang of the "being a sound engineer" thing at the time. "Perelandra" -- Concept-themed album, loosely based on C.S. Lewis's "fairy tales for adults" series, with bits of the Glass Hammer mythos thrown in. The sound is even better, the keyboards are even more prominent (if such a thing is possible) and the music and lyrics are excellent. This album has a much cooler tone than "Journey of the Dunadan". Check out "Felix the Cat", a wicked keyboard/piano adaptation of the 4th movement of Mendelssohn's 4th Symphony. "Live and Revived" -- Limited edition disc, probably sold out by now (only 1000 made). Mostly "live" tracks from the band rehearsing in the studio. Several other new tracks that haven't made it onto other albums. The song "Strangers in the Sky" alone is worth the price of the disc. "On to Evermore" -- The new disc. An incredible concept album with astounding sound, intricately written music, outstanding playing all around. This one has been in heavy rotation since the band sent it to me. It is a classic disc. Glass Hammer is: Fred Schendel: Lead and backing voals, keyboards, occasional acoustic and electric guitars, mellotron, Hammond organ, sitar, mandolin, flute, occasional drums Steve Babb (DeArqe): Lead and backing vocals, keyboards, bass, Taurus pedals, mellotron, percussion Walter Moore: Lead and backing vocals, occasional guitars, drums David Carter: Lead and rhythm guitars, backing vocals As if all this weren't enough, Babb and Schendel also have released two albums of C.A.F.E. music (Concept-Ambient-Fantasy-Electro -- think ambient dance techno with a fantasy tinge) under the name TMA-2, and Carter, Babb and Schendel have also released an album (with Bill McKinney on drums -- Walter Moore plays drums live) under the name of Wyzards. Wyzards is heavy heavy prog rock with a decidedly 70's/early 80's tinge to the style of music -- but up-to-date, modern sound! Anything by Glass Hammer and their esteemed associates is worth picking up. Check out http://www.glasshammer.com/ for more info. I saw them live last Saturday here in Sydney and they put on a great show. I have been a fan of them since 1983, but don't have ReLoad or Load and I believe they sold out and gone against everything that they once stood for. However there live show remains as good as ever and they played a much more enthusiastic set that there last gig in Sydney over five years ago. They played just 2 songs from ReLoad and 3 from Load which made me happy. Of course the biggest cheers came for the older classic like Damage Inc. and Creeping Death. The shock of the night was the first encore when they played a three song acoustic/country mini set at the front of the stage. James and Jason were great, Lars solid as ever, though the fast songs he struggled a bit with, Kirk was disappointing, the once great player is now a shadow of his former self, whether it's the drug's, I don't know. From my view the stage, Kirk seems to have more hair than I remember him having :) graham ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Apr 1998 18:03:32 -0500 From: Seth Hatlelid To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 3710 Message-ID: If any jammer needs a place to stay for the St. Louis DT show in May, let me know. Obviously, the easiest way to bring that to the direct attention of the band is through Portnoy's email; even though I would imagine that his inbox is quite full. At any rate, I would definately be available to "second the nomination" to Portnoy, and I can give a reasonable estimate of the gig's specifics (for example, there's no way that ALL of the 40,000 students attend the gig). I noticed he didn't mention that they threw that puppy together in LESS THAN A FUCKING WEEK! I guess when you have months and months to re-record and overdub, you can make something sound as 'jelled' as it can possibly be. And from where I sit, these guys are JELLED! THAT comes from the musicianship! Universal Mind is incredibly jelled!!! I happen to think the ending of Universal Mind is great, they're having fun with it, sheesh. Someone needs to start reviewing the reviewers :) To take a song like that which grooves so damn hard, and to just shrug it off cuz he doesn't like honky tonk or whatever, is just pompous at best... Too much ANALysis for me :) Oh yeah, by the way, Universal Mind is my favorite song off the album, so don't make me hurt you :) > Yet it is the virtuoso aspect that makes Liquid Tension Experiment that attractive - including the > guitar-keyboard duet of "State Of Grace," a track which often shines in its own beauty. Uh, yeah, ok guy, whatever you say :) It's one of the things that that makes it attractive. I happen to like the disc FIRST AND FOREMOST cuz it sounds good. I don't need to know anything about whether they're virtuosos or not to know what sounds good to my ear. > In the world of progressive rock, jam sessions are now becoming the "in" thing. Is it me, or does this album sound NOTHING like a Dream Theater album? :) Yeah, ok, it's got some identifiable drum/guitar licks, but aside from that I just don't hear DT in there. Rudess and Tony each have their own sound far apart from anything I've heard in DT. Even JP/MP explore many new things on the disc. I think they all fed off each other and went places that are far from where DT lives. I think they meant to. > Whatever the case, while the music is brilliant, the magic just isn't there this time > around. Well, hope he doesn't have to wait too long for the "PERFECT" album to come along. Life is indeed short. Meanwhile I think I'll go put some of that LTE magic in, thanyouvermuch. Guess they'll let just about anyone buy a journalism degree these days. Daily Vault? Maybe they shoulda kept this one locked up... Maybe it was just to precious to be let out and risk someone stealing valuable secrets about the state of the music scene. Maybe this guy thinks he really has his finger on the pulse of progressive rock, eh? MAYBE, this guy should use the word MAYBE one more time in the reivew :) Sorry guy, I've read some good music reviews, but this one just didn't have the magic this time :P > But one wonders if the concept of progressive supergroups might already be wearing thin. Perhaps if I want it to happen, I can make it happen :) Naw, just reviews by "reviewers" too full of themselves that are wearing thin. Is it any wonder the progressive music scene is having so much trouble generating sales with reviews like this. I honestly hope that few people listen to this subtle brushing off of the album as something which just seemed to come up short. Less than a week! I wonder if the reviewer even listened to it for more than a week before jumping on the 'I like it.....BUT....' bandwagon I keep seeing crop up in many a progressive music review. Less than a week! Dude, leave that shit to the professionals :) Can you tell I had a bad day? Seriously, though, I think it's a great disc. The guy praised the disc and all. Yet it came off a little contrived when underneath it all, it kinda seemed like he just couldn't be bothered with the whole concept of putting great musicians together to see the 'magic' unfold; perhaps his prophecy will come try. I certainly hope not. This is truly magical. How many times can you recall thinking "Damn, I wish so-and-so would get together and just jam?"
