Both of the small record stores near my house had it, which was suprising. (probably to satisfy the number of DT fans here at UCSB) Anyways, I haven't given it a good listen yet, but my favorite song so far is 'Universal Mind'. The liner notes are awesome, they tell about how the project got started and the recording process. Portnoy mentions Jens Johansson as one of the keyboard possibilities. I am listening to him now on the newest STRATOVARIUS album 'Visions'. He kicks ass, but I don't really see his style fitting into DT. It has some very cool stuff in it, but it wasn't good enough to oust my Storyhill: Echoes which I've gotten as much mileage from as any other 2 CDs I've ever had. The flamenco style guitar on BLS is very cool, but for being an improv type thing, I think it's way too mellow. I guess I was hoping for another LTE, and this ain't it. Levin is great as usual, and Bozzio, while not my favorite drummer, does some very interesting stuff. I'm sure it'll grow on me. They say the oldest form of running away is leaving and moving from place to place. I left my home to find myself, came back and looked in the mirror, and there I was. Me and me. OK, what exactly is so godly about this Coltrane? I've never heard him play. I'm just curious as to why everyone revers him so much - is he just like a really good sax player, or is there some other external factor that makes what he does even more special? A clarification: I made an ass of myself by referring to JP's "Example *13*" of the Rock Discipline video, when in fact it was "Example *16*" that I was talking about. This is where he tries to incorporate the previous lesson into an actual solo. I thought this was pretty "jazzy", and I liked the background music (sampled as it was). Whatever. I have LTE!!!! I've listened to it thrice so far, and I must say it is truly an amazing work of art, especially for something banged out in just a week!! Most of you that have this probably can take a pretty good guess at what my favorite track is. "State of Grace" is also just so beautiful . . . very moving, I hope to have it played at my funeral. :) [Brian is thinking happy thoughts today!] ;-D Anywayz, it's a great album, and I think that anyone who loves DT instrumentals should not hesitate to pick this one up. Oh yeah, and Jordan Rudess is fucking amazing. I'm in awe. Re: guitars: Should I decide not to buy an Ibanez (I *am* a JP slut, as well as a Vai slut), which of the "lesser known" guitar companies should I look into, for a sound like JP's? Should I decide not to get DiMarzio pickups, are Duncans really that much better? Any advice in regards to this would be appreciated. [Brian can't complain about DT playing nowhere near him. I finally got my little brother (umm, younger bro, he's bigger 'n me) turned away from the dark side of Industrial and Grunge to the light of Progressive and Metal. While in town with two friends of his, he bought both I&W and Awake. And he's admitted that Marillion "isn't that bad." Hope!!! I also loaned my Angra "Holy Land" to a coworker, who proclaimed it good. I warned him it was somewhat strange (Carolina IV more than the others); he reminded me that he's older than me and grew up on Pink Floyd & stuff; I mentioned that I had some stuff that could weird him out, such as a band that invented their own language to sing in (Magma). I heard they broke up) a progressive funk band. Heavy funk, often with Frippian dissonance in the guitar lines and drum lines reminscent of Discipline-era Bruford, in that under all the crazy accents is a steady 4/4 groove on the bass drum. The vocals are rap, singing, strange noises. Comparisons with Mr. Bungle are inevitable at this point, but the Screaming Headless Torsos are not nearly as raucous, or inventive. Still, I think jammers will dig them. They kick funky posterior. There is a sample at http://www.afn.org/~afn39111/free.zip of the second track, "Free Man," from their self titled album. If you like it, well, finding the album won't be easy, but worth it, I think. The 2 meg sample is in mono, because I don't have the disk space for more, but that doesn't really matter because it's only meant to promote cool music. The file is zipped to avoid cooking of the mp3 by Netscape. The song will hopefully be around for a week (I have yet to see if the automatic file deleter grabs it for being too big or not). After that point, it will disappear from the face of the earth, to be replaced by something else. What do you think?
