And the Jam seems like a good place to go trolling for eclectic music-listeners and artistic metalhead-types... =) Besides, there's Bruford in there! Prog content! Anyway, like I said, if you have any of the above CDs and have access to a scanner, please email me. Thanks. That's not quite a dis-proof of the above. They are logically different entities. The seocnd one is logically valid, it just seems screwy because of a linguistic hack (the word nothing is abused) The first is not logically consistent. The same logic as the first one would allow: Dead people rot. Turnips rot. Therefore dead people are turnips. or how about My cat has fleas My dog has fleas Therefore cats are dogs. Now, if the original statement had been that _only_ braind dead people like MM, that would be different. Sorry, I just don't like misuse of logic. :) ~Chris ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Mar 1998 20:25:19 +1030 From: "Woolcock" To: "YtseJam Mailing List" Subject: My ratings due to recent posts... Jason was a child prodigy, who recorded his first Shrapnel album when he was 16 or 17 (Speed Metal Symphony, with the band "Cacophony"). His technique is flawless, and his phrasing is to die for... but mainly, it's uncanny how listenable he is... his guitar playing, more than Vai, or anyone else I've ever heard, just sounds like a natural extention of his human voice. The album Perpetual Burn (Solo album on Cacophony) is some of the most dramatic, amazing and beautiful music anyone can ever hear. After recording his first solo album and splitting up with Cacophony (Jason and current Megadeth guitarist, then co-shredder in Cacophony, Marty Friedman decided they wanted to try playing in bands where the guitar isn't the frontman) Jason got the (then, highly coveted) gig playing with David Lee Roth on the Lil Ain't Enough album. While recording, Jason started having problems with his calf muscles, and eventually problems with his hand strength. When he finally went to see the doctor, they told him it was ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease, what Prof. Steven Hawkings suffers from). A few years later, he released an album that he composed in his head and slowly clicked away at his computer to bring into life (Perspectives). He can hardly move, speak/communicate, etc, but his mind is completely intact.... sort of like being in a prison and always being able to see and hear and smell the outside, but never being able to be there. He very recently had some surgery to help him cope with some difficulties, but he is supposedly still doing alright. > From: The iban > just another awesome guitar player, that's all Yeah... Dream Theater's just another good band. Bach was just another decent composer. Paganini's violin playing was real swell. That's all. > From: Alan Estrada > Subject: Roland Rupp: The New Shred Files > Well, for the people who didnt believed that Roland really played we > recorded some audio files without any effects, editing or anything, just > guitar, amp and computer and we directly recorded some improvisations, > now you can download all the files at > http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Theater/7842/ I'm sure these ones are a LOT better, after speaking to Rupp... but we had DAMN good reason for not believing that those other samples were legitimate.... by Rupp's own admission, they were sped up (because of the tape deck he was using in the mix down). He mentioned that he didn't ever intend for those songs to get spread around, etc. Finally, Thal Fans: Ron has finished his web page and we replaced the old one with it. It's at http://www.prognosis.com/bumblefoot and it's FILLED with info. It's a really good site. Alison, looking confused: > << I'm forced to admit my lameness here, *sulk* > (AlisOn whispers: "who's Jason Becker?") Rocky replied: > just another awesome guitar player, that's all > the Rock That's like saying Neil Peart is "just another good drummer" -- yeah, it's true, but there's so much MORE. Jason Becker is, to borrow a line from Madsman, "no doubt the coolest overall guitarist/musician/overall human being on the planet". He and Marty Friedman released two shredfest albums as Cacophony, then Jason released his own solo album, "Perpetual Burn", raising the bar of progressive shred metal guitar even higher. His musicianship and playing were astounding -- even though he was only 18 years old. Jason joined David Lee Roth's band and recorded "A Little Ain't Enough" with them -- but by the time the tour rolled around, Jason was unable to manage the live playing in front of a crowd in a concert situation. You see, Jason has ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease). It's a neuromuscular disease which slowly cripples its victims and leaves them trapped inside a body that's failing them. Normal life expectancy is about 5 years from onset; Jason is still alive after almost 9 years. All through the progression of the disease, as it made him too weak to play guitar, confined him to a wheelchair, and took away his ability to speak, Jason has never lost hope and has refused to let it depress him or stop him. He has continued writing and recording music with the aid of computers and friends who play some of the instruments. His album "Perspective", released in 1996, is one of the most uplifting and powerful albums I have ever heard, and deserves a place in everyone's collection. Jason's one of the real heroes in this world, I think. His spirit's unbroken, his mind is as strong as ever, and his music is simply outstanding. Go to http://www.jasonbecker.com/ for the full story on Jason, his life, and his music. It's worth the trip.
