Slash? Nah. Looks more like Alex Skolnick to me. So now MP wants everyone to throw banners and big posterboard cards up on stage at him? Man. I feel bad. :) MM: I have the same problem with Marilyn Manson that I have with the Grateful Dead - I don't mind the band, or the music, so much as I can't stand the rabid fans. I guess I was turned off when I was in college, and my roommate was a Shiite Deadhead - wouldn't even bother listening to anything else. I see a lot of the same qualities in MM fans - they'll only listen to MM, they won't bother with anything else, and they're snobby about it. The difference is, though, is that the *rabid* Dead fans seem to be more educated than the MM fans, most likely due to age. And I'm not lumping casual listeners like you, me, or DS in here, mind you - I'm only talking about the hardcore people. And the funny thing about MM fans is that in their quest for individuality - they all look the same. Short songs? Anyone remember S.O.D? "This is the anti-procrastination song!" (end of song). And I liked the bass player for Death. If you can get past Chuck's vocals (I'm not a fan of the 'Carbonated Burp' school of singing), then it's a pretty good album, I thought. Though not as good as Sepultura's first one. Or their latest one, for that matter. I'm friggin' bored. Can you all tell? To: email_address_removed Subject: Stuff on Marilyn Manson Message-ID: Just catching up on Ytsejams, and I see people wondering about Marilyn Manson, appeals and such. I personally like the drum beats from "Beautiful People", and the whole music of "Antichrist Superstar". I must say, one of the things that attracts me the most is Manson during interviews. he comes across with both normalcy and ecentricity. I would say abnormal, but it conflicts with the normalcy. his messages are often misread from his music. ideally, he wants his music to promote a dialogue betweeen parents and their children. he would prefer that parents, instead of censoring thier kids music, teach their kids, so their kids can choose right or wrong. he also has some very funny comments...one I remember from a Politically Incorrect: (Christian Advocate, abbreviated CA, and Manson, abbreviated MM): CA: "You're not Hitler, your not...., your not any of these people, their all dead!" MM: "What about Elvis?" CA: "You're not him either!" MM: "How do you know?" CA: "You don't shake your hips like him." MM: "You don't know, you've never seen me." I personally got a laugh out of it. and no, I am not bashing Christians (personally, I'm Baptist, somewhat practicing, just not attending Church like I should be). he's human, as well. another way to describe him is the Ozzy of now. in fact, some of the rumors I hear about him sound vaguely familiar to some of the things Ozzy was accused of doing early in his career! just my two cents. sorry if I got carried away! each to their own opinion! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Mar 1998 11:39:25 CST From: "JEFFREY T CLINE" To: email_address_removed Subject: this and that Message-ID: Recently I've seen people post about several different issues of interest, so I thought I'd give my thoughts. 1. Deen Castronovo-phenominal drummer, as others have posted he's played on many shrapnal records as well with pop-rock bands such as Bad English and I believe Hardline. He also played on G/Z/R's (Geezer Butler's) first album. I've also seen one of his instructional videos which was incredible. Unlike some artist videos that are only cool to watch, his actualy gives some valuable playing tips. If you want a album that captures his playing well then check out James Murphy Convergence. 2. The New Maiden Album- If you liked X-factor you'll most likely enjoy this one. It's basicaly a outgrowth from X-factor with better production. I'm not totaly impressesd because I've been listening to things such as LTE, Bozzio, Levin, Stevens, and Ty Tabor. It seems to me that the music of other similar bands such as Judas Priest and Bruce Dickinson have grown a lot more. However, if your a longtime Maiden fan then you know what to expect. 3. Death- This is one of the most technicaly impressive bands I've ever heard. Their album Individual Thought Patters is amazing. They are very hard to place in a category because they transend any genra of music. They incorporate elements of death metal, progressive metal, jazz, and fusion. The vocals are very nasty such as bands like Obituary, but their playing is so great that it can be overlooked. I especialy encourage any drummers and bass players (such as myself) to go out and get this album. Ask any drummer who is a fan of heavy music and thier likely to tell you that Gene Hoglin is one of the baddest mothers on the planet. I warn you this is not an album for the tame at heart because it is very heavy music, but if you enjoy complex musical arrangements you should definately check it out. 4. Bozzio, Levin, Stevens- Great album by three amazing players. If you like LTE you should like this disc. However, don't expect it to be as agressive. Their is some amazing playing, but the overall vibe of the album is much more calm. I think musicians can appreciate this album much more than the average listener. 5. Shadow Gallery- As many have posted they are a great band. Yes the vocals are a bit melodramatic at times, but they seem to escape from the "typical" progressive band tag which is characterized by being technicaly great, but incapible of writing good songs. If the only progressive bands your into are Dream Theater and Rush then you should also enjoy this band who seems to have an identity of thier own unlike many of the progressive bands I've listned to.
