Kube" To: email_address_removed Subject: Short songs vs. Long Songs. Message-ID: Well, it's certainly been a long time since I have posted to the jam. But here goes (cracking fingers) I have to say that these 30 second songs suck. To repeat the same line over and over again, REALLY sucks. Don't get me wrong, if a band wants to play something really cool and make it 30 seconds or 1 minute long, I will like it, but I must say..I'd be really disappointed that there wasn't more. Now, the Dead Kennedies just suck. Plain in simple IMHO. What a waste of studio time and tapes and CD's! Now for Long Songs. I really didn't like long songs until I got into Dream Theater. Typically speaking, anything over 7 minutes is long to me. The "average" song is about 3:30-5:00 long. What I do like to see is what Fates Warning did on APSOG. They divided the album into parts. I wish that DT had done that on ACOS. That way, I could easily switch to my favorite parts. Don't get me wrong, I love the whole song.. but I like to hear some parts more than others. later, J ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Mar 1998 20:19:57 -0700 From: "woot" To: Subject: poseurs Message-ID: <000501bd579c$e4ed17e0$message_id_removed> >What is Manson like? Looks like a more fucked up version of NIN to >me...Any musical value? *snicker* I'll answer this one. Marylin Manson believes that everyone should strive to be different, because "normality" isn't cool. (<----normality isn't cool. hehehehe) Of course they then proceed to play music that involves nothing more than 3 power chords played over and over and over and over, proving to everyone except the brain-deads that listen to them, that they are extremely normal, as far as the music biz goes. I apologize to all the MM fans out there, but even Nirvana could right a catchy tune. I don't think I've ever hated a band more than MM. They can't play, they can't write, they're hypocrites, and, oh yea, they worship Satan. Yummy. yea, yea, I know. I need to stop sugar coating my thoughts. I didn't want to offend anyone. Get high on ether when there's no one in the house. Pretend it's the big one the moment you pass out. That's just rehearsal, but it's comforting somehow To practice dying now. woot™ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Mar 1998 22:25:19 -0500 From: Kevin Madden To: email_address_removed Subject: Geezer lives in Fidel's new house Message-ID: El Medico del Mosh dijo: >He played in Neal Schon's band, Hardline... more of an AOR type rock band, >but some of his most impressive stuff is on Tony MacAlpine's Maximum Security. >He also played on tour with Geezer Butler... If you like watching some running-suit clad punk rap/singing/chanting over monotonous music, I stand corrected. Castronovo was big, but there wasn't much he could do for Geezer's one-note material. He also played on the two Bad English CDs and on (if I remember right) Marty Friedman's Dragon's Kiss album. He's pretty good, but he ain't Yoda. As for Hardline being AOR, they used to play that all the time at dances in Jr. High. I have that album and love it. :) I'd say it leans more toward the glam/cheese-rock vein. I always think of Celine Dion as AOR, tho. Neal Schon can almost pass for Yoda. BTW, Journey's also got a new (yes another) live greatest hits album for anyone interested. Produced by our man Kevin Shirley. I still have yet to pick it up, but it's basically all the songs on the studio greatest hits album. --KorgX3 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Mar 1998 22:39:41 EST From: KEZCOM To: email_address_removed Subject: Summer Tour?!? I didn't see them live, but I was lucky enough to see Ozzy in Chile I think...2 or 3 years ago or so...before Ozzmosis came out, I believe...anyway on the Monsters of Rock South America tour, Deen played drums (btw, Geezer was on bass and Joe Holmes on guitar). Although I was pretty impressed by Joe Holmes (he sounded to me like a modern day version of Randy--but not quite), Castronovo impressed me the most, because, obviously he played well, kind of put his own sound into Ozzy's stuff, and also he was aggressive as FUCK, very energetic, great drummer. If that weren't enough, as we all know MP said that if a drummer had to replace him in DT he'd want Deen...MP knows best, IMHO. Later 'jammers. Oh yeah one other thing. Any of you bass players on the jam heard of a sick bastard by the name of Steve DiGiorgio? Damn...check out his work with Sadus (esp. A Vision of Misery) and also with Death (Human, Individual Thought Patterns, upcoming "The Sound of Perseverance"), plus I understnad he'll be on James Murphy's next solo record. European festivals in June 4. opening slot for Deep Purple in the US through August & September afterwards, I think it will be time to start thinking of the next recording........ As things get confirmed, I'll pass them along. C) here's a crazy one for ya......I'm finishing up turning my basement into a rehearsal / recording studio. Marlene & I are using all of the banners that fans have made & I have collected through the years....my problem is, I am covering the walls, ceiling, etc and have run out of banners... Son of a bitch, where was that _sarcasm_ button when I needed it? Someone said email isn't the perfect medium, and they were right. It was just a joke. I still don't take it that seriously. It wasn't even _my_ joke. Geez, I'm 60% German and I thought it was damn funny. I'm really sorry, guys. As for the actual band named "Superior", I'd like to give my impressions for those who haven't heard them (I got my CD from impulsemusic.com). At first, the name "Superior" seemed a bit pretentious to me, but that pretty much told me that they were a prog band. They're essentially a metal band with strong piano a great bass guitar presence that gives the album a lot of power. I think about 1/2 of the songs on "Behind" are great, while the other 1/2 are so-so. My main complaint is that there are too few guitar solos. I mean real guitar solos. There's a neat intro to "Tomorrow's Eve" and there's one song with a solo that was just GORGEOUS (can't place it right now), and I always wait for the rest of the album to live up to it. It seems like the lead guitar player is holding back for some reason, and I think this is the band where some showmanship would really pay off. As for the vocalist (I'm very picky here), he has a wonderful midrange voice, and a great low range that many forget to add to their arsenal. He almost makes you think you can sing along. Then (as on "Tainted Silence") he breaks out the heavy-metal-high-range that reminds you that he's a professional and you're not. He also has the best enunciation of any non-native-English speaking vocalist I've heard in a long time. Bottom line: if you're looking for prog, tread carefully. If you're looking for metal done very well, I highly recommend it. (These guys just embarrass Helloween, IMHO) BTW, this is the LAST of this "Nazi" crap thread on the Jam (all of two days?). I you have any more petty, knee-jerk bitching, send it to ME. Geez, people. We're too young to be this uptight. Peace!
