I have paid 35$ cdn for it and have not regret it, it's one of the best record I have ever bought !!! > Savatage - Wake of magellan Actually, Savatage was a Glimmer Rock band gone Prog/Metal... Their Dead Winter Dead was a top one, I've heard that WOM is better... I hope to hear it soon.. > Anything not listed above but is in the same genre. Enchant : Wounded : Excellent, a little bit pop with prog... a bit like rush but not... quite difficult to say. the singer has a Jon Anderson kind of voice, but not as "high" as Jon. Fates Warning : APSOG is quite Good / Hope you know them !!! Magellean : A Test of Wills : WOW !!! very weird but awesome ! Tempest : Celtic / Irish Prog !!! very weird also Threshold : Their latest : Extincs intents or something like that is excellent quite DT - Like... Psychadelitessen is excellent also. Stratovarius : Quite Helloweenish... but quite good also : Check for Visions... Heaven's Cry : Food for Thought Substitute : From Montreal... well a mix of Queensryche / Rush / Metallica and Dream Theater... Quite good for a first album... I have never regret that one. I was surprised to read on the Jam that some people consider SG a bit cheesy, esp. because of the vocals. I didn't get that impression from "Carved in Stone" at all I think the vocals are clear and strong, and he never strays from his range. He's no JLB, but I think he's very competent and pleasant. Something that does bother me a bit is how the backing vocals are mixed. They're very light and airy, making them seem weak. If these guys can actually sing, I'd make sure the next album is produced differently. Also, the kick drums and bass lack the punch that is expected from a contemporary CD (i.e. FII!), which makes the music a bit flat. I really like the CD, though; the lyrics are good and there's just enough "musical masturbation" to keep me happy. =] I haven't heard their eponymous 1st album. Same lineup? Same style? How's the production? Anyone know? Take care. Glenn ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ L. They have only two albums VEMOD and NUCLEUS. Vemod is very King Crimson-like (in the John Wetton era not he double trio era) with heavy mellotron but Nucleus is heavier. I like Vemod better. Angragard is from Sewden as well. Disbanded a while ago. I heard that they're trying to form the band again but I do not know when. Angragard has 2 studio albums out "Hybris" and "Epilog". Both albums are almost instrumental, very King Crimson'like with Van Der Graaf Generator in the dark mood. Epilog is easier to get into for the new listener. They have the live album out a while ago but I do not have it. Angragard has 3 mellotron players, very heavy mellotron if you like this kind of sound. Both of Angragard and Anekdoten played at the Progfest'94 in LA. If you want to see their live video, it's in the Progfest'94 video. Really cool! As I understand it, their first album was never really intended to be more than just a demo, but Magna Carta was just starting up and needed something they could release. The production isn't great, but it's not terrible either. The biggest problem is the drums - they didn't have a drummer, so they used a drum machine. The only other lineup difference is that Gary Wehrkamp hadn't joined yet. As for style, it's not as polished as CiS, but it's basically the same sort of stuff. There are a few places where it's a bit too random and meandering for my taste, but most of it is still pretty interesting. Definitely worth checking out if you like CiS. Outstanding compositions with ridiculous time shifts and some great sweeping and tapping from guitarist Marcel Coenen (hi, Marcel!). Keyboardist Franck Faber shines with an excellent mix of sounds (and is actually audible! Wow!). Vocalist Gregoor van der Loo has a floating, cloudlike tenor with very little vibrato and a unique tone. Very good stuff. > Liquid Tension Experement (probably know enough about this already) After all the positive reviews here, you need more confirmation? Go get it already! :) > Shadow Gallery - Carved in stone/shadow gallery/Tyranny "Carved in Stone" is one of my favorite albums, due mainly to the strong presence of walls of synth and piano in the songs. Plenty of shredding from guitarists Gary Wehrkamp and Brendt Allman (hi, Brendt!). Lyrics are very thought-provoking in places and the choral vocals are excellent. The 20-minute "Ghostship" is an absolute masterpiece. The key word for Shadow Gallery is "atmosphere" -- they've got it in spades. Brendt has warned fans to stay away from the self-titled debut till it's rereleased with better sound; I haven't heard it but "Carved in Stone" is well worth picking up. > Symphony X - Any CD Heavy heavy sound, neoclassical shredding from monster guitarist Michael Romeo and equally monstrous keyboardist Michael Pinnella, a vocalist reminiscent of Ronnie James Dio but with a style that's uniquely his, cool fantasy- and medieval-inspired lyrics, outstanding musicianship and compositions, VICIOUS time and rhythm shifts....can you tell I like this band a lot? "The Divine Wings of Tragedy" and "The Damnation Game" are must-haves, and I haven't picked up "Twilight in Olympus" yet, but everyone who has it already is raving about it too. > Angra - Holy Land (definately getting this) Angra mixes Brazilian rhythms with heavy metal, orchestration, strings, and layers of keyboards for a very unique sound. Call it speed-classical-progressive metal. Andre Matos has one of the strongest voices you will hear anywhere. "Holy Land" and "Angels Cry" are both worth picking up; "Holy Land" is more experimental and blends more orchestration and choirs into the mixture, while "Angels Cry" is more straightforward speed metal but still excellent. On a somewhat related note, everyone who likes keyboard-heavy prog with great production, an epic story, and excellent vocals needs to go out and get Glass Hammer's newest concept album "On To Evermore". A more detailed review will be forthcoming next week when I have some time; till then, check out http://www.glasshammer.com/ for more info. DT deserves it all, they've worked so hard with their instruments and I hate to watch all these Green Day's who don't know shit about what they're playing getting all the damn awards and stuff. It is so wrong ! And bands should never have to fight about the artistic freedom, it should be self-evident. This damn money runs too many things in this world. Anyway, blahblah. Now that I'm here again, I thought I could write something else too. (Like you would be interested) I am in 10th heaven seeing DT again and I tell you I could've listened to them play for days or weeks in a row ! I'll never get tired of them. I noticed that they've changed a lot on stage since the first time they played in Finland ('95). They seemed more relaxed on stage now and somehow bigger. Of course, they are bigger now than 3 years ago. And I was really happy to notice that they had a long set (over two hours). I think if they came all the way here they should play as much as possible. But still we missed so many good songs..(tell me a bad DT song and I'll see to it myself, that you have a different opinion in two seconds !!). Did anyone tape the show complitely (video/cassette) ? A friend of mine taped half of it on video, but I'd love to get the whole show !! Please mail me if any of you have it, I'm sure we can make a trade or something. I'm also interested in photographs, I have lots of pics of DT and other bands. Just got my Lions share pics, still waiting to get those Portnoy/Petrucci clinic pics. Another thing that I found interesting was that the LTE sold out here in a few days..now I just have to wait almost two weeks to get a copy of that ! I'm really glad that people listen to good music here, though there's still lots of work to be done with the rest of those who've taken the wrong path.. I know I had something more interesting than this to write here, but my memory did the tricks again.. Hey, I would LOVE if DT played some songs from Winter Rose live some day, but that's never gonna work out !! (HINTHINT..) Or LTE and other projects. That way people that don't like it can just hit stop when it comes up. I won't be one of the people hitting stop; more like skip to the last song. And stop saying shorten Met II. If the DT guys are reading the jam, I don't want them to get any ideas of shortening the song. It's not a "hey we're still prog" song. It's a "hey, we do what we want to do" song. I think it is brilliant of them to put it on an album. That makes their next album an automatic classic and insuring good sales to established DT fans. Which CD's (NDTC) > Shadow Gallery - Carved in stone/shadow gallery/Tyranny I have "Carved in Stone", and from what I've noticed, it's a "love it" or "hate it" CD. Some say there's too much cheesy lyrics (I agree with them someway :) ), but I really like the album. It's not heavy at all, with some rare exceptions. The vocalist has a pretty good voice, and the keyboards are awesome. The over 20 minutes song "Ghostship" is amazing. > Symphony X - Any CD GET "The Divine Wings of Tragedy" !!! And I mean it. It's really great!!! Cool vocals, incredible guitar playing, perfect mix of heavy guitar rhythm sections and clean melodic interludes. And all that in only one song (the title one). The rest is just as cool as it gets. :) > Vanden Plas - Any CD I don't know them... but listening to the .MP3 from "The Rainmaker" (I think that's it) I got from Dr. Mosh's site, I really did not like the vocals. The rest is pretty cool. > Savatage - Wake of magellan What are you waiting for? This is a kick ass CD!!! IMO the best of 1997, along with DT's FII. It's quickly turning into my favorite Sava album. You have to listen to it to know, it's very difficult to describe. BTW, I'm just a couple of minutes away from leaving to Savatage's tonight show. YEAH!!! :) > Angra - Holy Land (definately getting this) Nice choice! Really great album. You should also check "Angel's Cry" - a little different from HL, heavier and faster.
