Certainly in the running for best of the year (along with Spock's Beard - KOS), and it's only April. I hope there's a sequel. A tour would probably be too much to hope for... (sorry.. as much as I love DT, Pink Floyd is still my favourite band) BTW: Got LTE (amazingly.. with no trouble.. walked into a store, looked under the Dream Theater section.. and there it was! =) ) An AWESOME album. Not for everyone though.. but if you like long jam sessions and improvisiont.. this is the one for you. Anyone out there think that parts of 3 minute warning sound a bit like Phish in concert? Speaking of Floyd and LTE.. if you like LTE and you like floyd.. check out the band "The Machine". They are a Floyd cover band, but they often go on 30-40 minute incredible improv jam sessions between songs! I am still in awe at the improvisition in 3 minute warning.. blows my mind! -Ponte ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Mar 1998 14:57:56 -0500 From: Gary Davis To: email_address_removed Subject: IRC Chat with LTE's Tony Levin!!! Message-ID: Hello Ystejammers! In the department of IRC Chats The Artist Shop definitely has some big news! We have another killer chat lined up for Sunday, March 29th at 5pm EST. This is a joint chat with King Crimson & Peter Gabriel bassist Tony Levin and experimental guitarist/loopmaster/sonic mayhem maker David Torn. On the IRC page you'll find details on how to join the chat along with a cover graphic and soundbites from the forthcoming Bruford/Levin Upper Extremities album. This is not an album to miss! In April they will be hitting the road on the east coast to support this album. Here is the latest update on those gigs: Bruford - Levin Upper Extremities Bill Bruford -drums, percussion and a little keyboards Tony Levin -basses and stick Chris Botti -trumpet David Torn -guitars and loops CONFIRMED PERFORMANCE ITINERARY EAST COAST APRIL 1998: April 13 New Haven / Toads Place April 14 Philly / T.L.A. I don't have information yet on how to access that netcast, but that's certainly a good question for the chat, eh? Also you'll definitely want to ask questions about Tony's participation in the new Magna Carta release, Liquid Tension Experiment with keyboardist Jordan Rudess, guitarist John Petrucci and drummer Mark Portnoy. This has just been released. You'll find it at . This is one album I can't recommend highly enough (Upper Extremities being another) and from every post I've seen on it on Ytsejam, most of you feel the same way! Hope to see you at the chat! Now I'm no expert on how much profits bands make off merchandize -- in fact, these topics frighten and startle me. After all, I'm just a caveman... Er, not going there. Anyhow, I reckon DT makes about as much money off a purchase of the European single as the Japanese single, given all the crazy overseas shipping and whatnot. So, if that extra $7 is just going to pay some drunken sea-captain anyway, what's the point in arguing the morality of MP3izing these songs? Who's with me, eh? Yeah! Yeah! Aside from that.. . the playing is incredible!! Mike is at his best with what i think its his best drum sound to date... and Jp is really shaping up his own sound.. as someone said before... Levin is equally awesome too...even thou i missed him during the unison parts..but his playing is amazing... Im not too crazy about Rudess thou...i just dont like his keyboard sounds..hes a great player.technically.. but as a matter of opinion i really dislike the sounds he chooses.. especially for rythim parts....dunno why... Faster than Kevin Moore he is, but that's not what I feel is so great about Rudess. First of all, when comparing keyboardists one must realize that Rudess was a child prodigy who was accepted to Juilliard (one of the most famous classical music schools in the world) at age 9. This is also partly due to his perfect pitch (which is evident when he EXACTLY duplicates stuff that JP plays on 3 Minute Warning). Rudess has the speed on the keys of a classical pianist. However, he goes even beyond that. He uses the best Keyboard in the universe (Kurzweil K2000) to stretch to the limits and programs all his own sounds and truly turns just the aspect of sound programming on the keyboard into its own artform. His keyboard lines are rarely just duplications of the guitar line, except on those superfast dualing lines. Listen to the guitar keyboard dual on Universal Mind. I just find it so classy and refreshing when he slams down those bebop piano lines mixed in with the traditional driving synth lead.... Well, the entire liner is a little longer than I feel like typing right now, but the "problem" that is being referred to here is that they jammed for so long on "Three Minute Warning" that the multitrack tape they were recording to ran out. Fortunately, MP had his personal 2-track DAT running, so the last minute or two was still recorded, although the sound quality isn't quite as good, and the sound drops out for a fraction of a second where the switch occurs. It does kind of break up the flow, but there really isn't anything they could do about it. > Thanks for any help, Roger...
