I sent my check in on Friday and got the CDs a week and a day later in the mail. And I got a credit slip for the CDs I ordered that they didn't have (I should have reserved) plus $4 for the Symphony X album. So I guess the price (at least for tDWoT) is $15 rather than $19 like the web page says/said. They have all the Magna Carta catalog but I don't know if they have the new CD LTE. Also they have Threshold's Cd's. Then, I happened to be walking by a Harmony House, and lo and behold they had it! Also, I got SX's "Divine Wings of Tragedy" and like it alot. But where can I find their new CD, "Twilight On Olympus"? Thirdly, I goofed and sent the following to the 'JAM, instead of another mailing list. Message-ID: For those of you in the St. Louis or Columbia, MO areas, there is a used CD / import / rare place called Now Hear This. I got LTE from there the day it came out for $13, while the 12 local Best Buy stores were still waiting for their combined 3 copies of the disc to come in. I bought two copies (one for Irene), the guy had already sold 6 so far, and had 4 more on reserve for other customers. This is also the place where I picked up A Pleasant Shade of Gray the day it came out, when no other place in the city (this is the Columbia one) had it. If you have access to either of these stores (there may be more, but these are the only two I know of), I highly recommend them. They even had the Jap import of the Hollow Years single for $21. As for everyone 'testing' Mike Portnoy to find out if it's really him, don't bother the man, that *is* his address. There are alot of us that have had it for a while, and I don't think Mike wants to be playing DT Trivia for the next month just to prove his identity. As for where the '420' comes from, April 20th is Mikes birthday, or 4/20... I don't think *any* of us are that obessed that we'd use his bday in our email address. :) Anyway, now that you're posting, Mike... I have been remiss in not forwarding these to the jam in a timely fashion and while he is clear and free about posting these things himself now, I will do what I should have done earlier in the week and post these items as directed. 1) Medleys. Ugh. Well, MP made a compelling argument that while it would be great for DT to play a five hour set every night (and being the monster he is he actually stated that if it were up to him THEY WOULD :), it is impractical for a band like DT to be able to do this night in and night out. They, as a band, have concluded that a two hour set is what they will be playing. Thus, to allow people who have not seen DT for a long time to hear parts of their epic long songs, medleys are the only way to go. This is a sensible approach and he wanted the jam to be better informed as to the reasoning behind the decision. >> I'm sure people in Finland (for a random example) >> would rather hear bits of Learning To Live and A >> Change of Seasons (both of which they never have >> heard live) as opposed to NONE of them and a full >> Metropolis, which they already have heard. (which >> is what the alternative was..) Mike also did say that if I perpetuate my distaste for medleys, that he would personally perform a manual tracheotomy on me, soooooooo, I now unequivocally say that I LOVE MEDLEYS !! 2) Christmas CD. Wow, ol' Warren really set me up for this one .... bastard !! But being the decent person he is has let the other 99.46% of the jam know that he was kidding when he abused my human rights on the jam ...... Anyhow, here is MP's unedited answer to why different material was not available to be put on the Christmas CD: >> Live tracks or unreleased songs >> are not an option because Elektra owns the >> rights to them and therefore we would not have >> been able to give them away as gifts... Mike, I realize that you had to increase your prices back to $20 (from $17) in large part to your printer experiences and ink gobbling for color images on the discs. I'm not flaming you (and will be ordering another CD soon anyway) but I'm in the crowd that would love to see you hit your aforementioned $13 target even if I don't get the color image on disc. I've never seen these two songs in any format, so I have encoded the only version I have into MP3 files. Unfortunately, this source is from a video tape of a JP guitar clinic (Orlando, FL - 8/18/97 same tape as Purple Rain on Dr. Mosh's site). It's mono, and the DAT "backing band" that JP was using sounds really crappy, but JP really shreds on these two short (>2 min) songs. I could also swear that MP did the drums for the backing tracks...if not...someone VERY influenced by Mike. It rocks hard, features absolutely virtuoso playing, and is an amazing accomplishment for one week's worth of time. The tunes are extremely cool - a couple could be DT instrumentals, as somebody already mentioned. For guitar fans, you will definitely be blown away by Petrucci's work on this album. If anything, his technique is just getting cleaner and more ridiculously honed. With both Portnoy and Petrucci on the album (IMO the "heart" of DT), this is the next best thing to Metropolis II. On an unrelated note, I would GREATLY appreciate it if any keyboard/MIDI gurus out there could recommend a good MIDI interface board. Actually, the manual for my keyboard (Roland XP-10) says you can interface it with a PC through either the serial port (sounds like the cheap alternative!) or through a MIDI interface card. Is the serial port interface sufficient for some amateur recording? What do you gain from the full MIDI interface card implementation? What MIDI cards do you recommend? What software? Any help would be much appreciated. jam on, -Neil. ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 3633 **************************
