Street Journal is a free Email newsletter focusing on reviews of (primarily)
progressive rock.  This months reviews include Liquid Tension Experiment

Actually, it is.  Top ten lists (or any other number, for that matter) are
forbidden.

Unless Bafu or Eckie write them, in which case their humor value outweighs

the five different positions on the strat do as follows....
position 1(all the way forward, towards the headstock): neck pickup only

p2: neck and middle pickup
p3: middle only
p4: middle and bridge
p5: bridge only

those are how  stock, non-modified strat switches work. the tone knobs
(don't quote me on this, but i am pretty sure) affect the neck and
middle pickups. they can be redone to affect whatever pickups you want,
though....

I have a suggestion if Yngwie is good or bad, some one who knows how to do
it could set up a page where you choose good or bad. When everybody has
voted we'll know if he is respectable or not since the majority always has
right. :))

What I can say about JP vs. Yngwie is that if JP had the chops of Kurt
Cobain he could still play circles around Yngwie.

I would also like to promote a great french guitarist, Patrick Rondat. He
sounds the way Yngwie wants to sound. I only have one of his albums,
Amphibia. It has all those incredible shredsolos that Yngwie is so famous
for, but it also has some wonderful songwriting. It's all instrumental, for
those who are interested the fanclub website, from which you can order
records from and hear samples at, is at

Manu Katche who played on his selftitled 1995 release, is one of my top 10
favorite 
drummers. He's so great, go listen to S.M.F. and then tell me that Satch's

Good choice!!  That is definitely a kick-ass piece of work.  Now I just
have to go and look at my well-worn liner notes again...haven't seen that
tidbit....

Ummmmm who taught that drummer how to speak? ;) Just joking. My best friend
is a drummer and he's a very smart guy, contrary to popular belief.

However:
The power section of an amp is not what gives it characteristics. Both Mesas
and Marshalls use 6L6s (Marshall calls them 5881s), yet do they sound
similar? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Same with 5150s. Ampeg tube bass amps also use
6L6s, but you go and try to plug a guitar in there, and see what you get.
That's just an extreme example, but it shows that it is the whole package
that makes the difference, not just one particular detail.

Plus, about Yngwie... you should think a bit before you go off on this list
like that. People have the right to have an oppinion on other artists/bands.
This is a Dream Theater list, not an Yngwie list, so there are some people
here that don't like Yngwie, and you'll have to learn to deal with that.

U missed my point completely, or maybe I wasn`t clear enough
expressing it. Ofcourse I didn`t mean that u should like and
respect or praise whatever JP chooses, thank god we`r smarter than 
that (hopefully). My point was that YM was a big influence on JP`s

Hi there

I am going to review both the John Petrucci clinic on the 27th and the
concert on the 28th, both in Malmv. Mike Portnoy also did a clinic in a
nearby town, but as they were at the same time and I'm a guitarplayer I
chose to go see John.

The Clinic

The clinic was at Musikbvrsen (a music store) in Malmv and began at 7 pm, I
was there at around 6:15 and stood outside the shop freezing and listening
to John warming up. At around 6:50 they opened the doors, I got a seat in
the second row, the people who worked in the shop had occupied the front
row... John came in at around 7:10 and began playing a warmup solo. The
solo ended with "Flight Of The Bumble Bee" by Tchaikovsky. He said that
Steve Morse had made an album called "Guitar Battle" (or something like
that) where rock guitarsists played classical pieces and that he (John)
played bumble bee there. I don't know if it's already released. 

Then he put on a cd with the chord progression from Prince's (or whatever
he's called) "Purple Rain". He jammed along to that for about 5 minutes and
then played along to a couple of the Liquid Tension Experiment songs, Kevin
Shirley had made versions without guitars for him. The cool thing was that
he said that since the whole thing was recorded and written in one week he
had forgotten most of the songs and had relearned them earilier in the day.
Of course I have never heard any of those songs before but I didn't hear on
single miss, and a lot of those passages were pretty tricky. :)

He ended the clinic by playing the two video game songs he had written for
Sega. In my opinion those were the coolest songs that night, but maybe
that's because they were made to be pretty easy listening and I would
probably like the LTE songs better if I got the chance to listen to them a
few times.

He stayed a while after the clinic and I got my guitar and my xmas cd
signed. He was really cool and not at all arrogant, but that we already
knew... I, shy as I am, couldn't make up anything to say other than "Will
you sign here", "Thank you very much" and later "This was great". Felt
kinda stupid meeting my biggest hero and not being able to speak.

The concert

The show started at 7:30 pm, Vanden Plas supported as usual. I missed the
first 10 minutes of Vanden Plas since I had to do a gig with a pyschedelic
band I'm in. There wasn't too much people there so I could get up to the
third row. When Vanden Plas were finished one of the guys in front of me
left so I got in the second row on the right side close to John Petrucci.
The only thing that I didn't like with this concert was that there were
three ramps that went out from the stage to the audience, if you watched it
from above it looked like an E. Derek and Mike were pretty far away. John,
John and James all came out on the different ramps so I got some contact
with each of them at least once during the concert. When I saw them in
Copenhagen in december last year there was a normal stage and in that way
that show was better.

They began with Mirror/Take The Time, in the same manner as on the IAW
video. I was expecting Lines In The Sand, so I was a bit surprised. I can't
remember the whole setlist but the two songs that were best were Lie and
Trial Of Tears. Lie was incredible live. Anne Lee was quite fun, the song
started with a piano solo, during the solo the crew mounted a small drum
set on the middle ramp and a vocal mic. Mike was supposed to sing through
that mic, but there was something wrong with the stand so several times
during the song he played with one arm and tried to adjust it. In the end
he kicked it to the side and concentrated on drumming instead, before they
went on with Hollow Years he got it adjusted correctly. On those two songs
John Petrucci played a nylon stringed solid body guitar with a piezo
pickup, it sounded pretty cool. John also played an unaccompanied solo that
was about the same as the warmup-solo he played at the clinic

During the drum solo Mike took a drum with a wireless mic on it and went up
front on the middle ramp and handed out drum sticks to some people in the
audience, there were no drummers in that area though, so there were no
surprises.

The encore was a medly of Metropolis, Learning To Live, The Crimson Sunset
and A Fortune In Lies.

A friend of mine taped the show, so there'll be an exact setlist later.

There's this norweigan guy (Markus Paus) who got in the
"Guiness Book of Records". He pulls off 460 and some notes per SECOND.
He uses both hands and all fingers to HO/PO notes ...
(I have heard him play, but 460 nps ??? In my fastest moments i can do
25 nps at most (strictly speed picking, no h/p)

Anyhow, at 200 BPM this Markus dude can play 1/128th notes !

Markus Paus can actually play that fast... I have seen him perform several
times. His techique is only good for playing fast. When the slow parts
comes he sounds like an aircrash. The fastparts are so fast that you can`t
hear the tones... =CC think it sucks big time! This guy actually quit school
and practiced 12 hours a day to reach this speed. Poor guy... I really hope
he will learn to play with soul someday... Mayby i should buy him "Learn to
play guitar in one day". He should draw some benefits from that book...

My sister had a bunch of those fancy girly shampoos in the bathroom back
home, so I decided to try a little experiment out...purely for scientific
purposes, of course.

Purpose: To determine whether Herbal Essence shampoos and conditioners make
a guy smell like a girl.

Hypothesis: Herbal Essence shampoos and conditioners will make a guy smell
like a girl.  Gender is not an issue in the good-smellingness 
of the products.

Procedure:
1. Took a shower using HE hair care products.
2. Smelled hair, recorded data.
3. Rinsed and repeated.
4. Re-smelled, recorded data.

Data:
Trial: 1   Smell: Boy
Trial: 2   Smell: Boy

Conclusion:
The good-smelling effects Herbal Essence shampoos only work on fems,
causing the rejection of the hypothesis.  It can be theorized that there is
something in the overall gender chemical make-up that causes this
difference.  Further experiments need be conducted.

There ya have it, folks!  Scientific *proof*.
