You may find that >you can enjoy it! There is nothing wrong with being a singer and I never saw where Calvin said you weren't a musician. All Cal is saying is that if you actually listen to all the parts of a song rather than letting them all bleed together, you can learn from it. I do this with vocals all the time, for example. Rather than trying to sing the main melody, I listen for the harmony. As a singer I'm sure you do this, too. You learn from it. Now expand that and pick out other parts of the song. Listen for the strings in the background, and compare them to the guitar or piano slugging in the forefront. Then listen to how they play in context with the drums and how the bass compliments the drums. The most educational part for me is when the parts are so different, but when you put them all together they fit. Then I can learn from those ideas and use them in my own writing. I take my inspiration from many, many different artists and genres of music. I can even listen to a Spice Girls song or even a Green Day song and, yes, even Yngwie's stuff (even though I have to take 3 days dosage of vitamin C afterwards) and think, "Hey, I like the way they did that." It takes all kinds of people to listen to all kinds of music. The best musicians are the ones that don't completely limit themselves on the basis of reputation or self-expression. I know so many people who will deliberately say, "Bah, this is absolute shit" because they're in the company of people who think so but know in the back of their mind that there is something about it that keeps their foot tapping. The better musicians are the one that let that foot tap and expand their horizons a bit. Of course I do know everything, I'm impotent! --KorgX3 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Feb 1998 19:24:13 EST From: DrummerEsh To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 3583 Message-ID: In a message dated 98-02-28 08:42:29 EST, you write: << - YEAH, let's visit the homes of evil Green Day fans in the dead of night and rape their wives, and kill them in their sleep in the name of the righteous prog God. >> I LIKE THIS IDEA, ANYONE IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA CONTACT ME AND WE CAN GET STARTED. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 01 Mar 1997 01:40:15 +0100 From: Yakov Kouznetsov To: email_address_removed Subject: DT-setlist, Paris Message-ID: <33177AEF.697@club-internet.fr> Hi, there! Hahahaha, whoa. :) Being an art student and a guitar player myself, I can REALLY relate to that analogy. But I thought the subject header for the post was gonna be about somethin' else... In this corner, at a slender 160 pounds, Mr. Tears in Heaven himself, ERIC CLAPTON! And in this corner, at a whopping 450 pounds, the Classical Speedster himself, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN! Well folks, it looks like we have one hell of a match up tonight. It's the neo classical shredder verses one of the great blues guitarists of our time! What should we expect from this grueling, steel-caged, fight to the death? Lots and lots of noise, I'm expecting! Yngwie's had a lot of rest in the past few years, with intensive training that has brought improvement in his donut consumption, and with that much ass to take down, Clapton's going to have his work cut out for him! And now we're going to take you to our commentators tonight, Bill and Ted! Bill: Whoa! Thanks man! This is gonna be a totally EXCELLENT matchup tonight, wouldn't you agree Ted? Ted: Right on dude! Whoa, it looks like they're about to start, let's take you to the cage! Bill: Excellent! Ref: Awright you two. We want to see blood tonight. The winner gets a Grammy for Best Heavy Metal Instrumental Performance. Let's keep it clean boys, no country songs, and no rapping. The first time somebody recites Green Day will be warned, the second time will result in ejection, am I making myself clear? Awright, fight hard, fight long, and Ptacek through the match until we have a winner! *ding ding ding* Bill: Whoa, most excellent! The match is now starting! Ted: I concur Bill, they're coming from their corners fresh after some warm up exercises and WHOA! Did you see that Bill? Bill: That I did, Ted! Yngwie just used his patented dorian round house minor kick and knocked Clapton against the cage! Ted: Most unruly! Now he's playing a polyrythmic beat using Clapton's head and the cage wall! Clapton: You're....fast....for...a fat ass! OYYYOYOYOYOYYYYYYYYY!!! Ted: Hey Bill, look at that, Clapton just knocked Yngwie to the ground with his pentatonic folding box punches to the head! Bill: Bodacious! Ted: Let's see if we can catch what Clapton is saying as he's pounding Yngwie's face into the mat! Clapton: It's people like you who make me want to write a metal song! And you can't even keep a damn beat! Yngwie: It's....called...bloof...A COMPLEX TIME SIG! Clapton: I don't care what you call it, tubby, I'm gonna-- Bill: What's this all about dude? Anthrax has just entered the building! Ted: We're all doomed!!! Bill: No, my pinheaded amigo, Anthrax, the metal band! Scott Ian just stomped through one of the walls! Ted: Are you sure it's a band? I thought it was a disease? Scotty: Hey four eyes.... Bill: Dear God! Scott Ian just cracked Clapton's head open with his Jackson! Ted: And Charlie's shoving what looks like two dozen Dunkin' Donuts down Yngwie's throat! **BOOOOOOOM!** Ted: YNGWIE JUST EXPLODED! Bill: Dude, I'd hate to be the guy who has to clean that mess! Ted: Anthrax wins the match! Anthrax wins! Anthrax wins! Anthrax wins! Bill: Whoa...Ted...no more Clapton or Yngwie! Message-ID: Let it be known that on the 28th day of the second month in the year of 1998 at approximately 11:22pm (Eastern Standard Time) the video "Number of the Beast" by the lords of all that is metal IRON MAIDEN was historically played on eMpTy tV in North America!!! It even included a small intro (how they got their name, etc) by that turd Matt Pinfield with the music to "Wasted Years" in the background and a spinning picture of Eddie in space from the inside cover of "Somewhere in Time". Of course it was played because Marilyn Manson requested it (and said how MTV needs more variety....from Lionel Ritchie to Iron Maiden to be exact)..but screw it..I was so friggin happy that I was actually seeing a video with real musical talent instead of the same shitty rap stop-motion videos and artists that bitch and moan instead of actually singing. maybe metal still has a chance over here........ When an otherwise hilarious British show gets >a bit of a budget, which always comes with a Snazzy New Intro (tm), the show >turns into American-style unfunny crap. Witness Red Dwarf and Chef. First off, I haven't seen "Chef" so no comment As to Red Dwarf, I happen to think season Seven is brilliant. I like that it isn't as "haha spit up your coke and piss your pants cause every line is a gag" funny. I found it a lot more thought-provoking than the other seasons, it had a sense of PLOT (gasp) and CONTINUITY (double gasp!) and actually (dare I say it) was good science fiction! I'm doubly impressed with it because of the behind the scenes trouble with season VII. First off, with the delay because of Craig "Listy" Charles being in Jail, the departure of Rob Grant (I think it was him who left and not Naylor) and the changes in the filming. You may know that for season VII they filmed instead of videotaping the show, and they didn't have a live audience -- the laughs (which I think they should just get rid of anyhoo) were added in by a test audience. There were quite a few changes, and the fact that they not only pulled it off, but moved the show into new ground (and improved it, too IMO) is darn near genious on the part of all involved. I, for one, am really REALLY looking forward to season VIII. They go back to video (the film was testing out stagin possibilities for a movie) and Chris "Smeg-Head Rimmer" Barrie is supposed to return full-time, along with good ol' Holly and the Big Red Ship being back on-board. As far as the "new intro" theory goes, I'm not sure what you mean. They changed the opening every season. Hm. What if DT covered the Red Dwarf theme song? (uh. DTC?) Fun fun fun in the sun sun sun ... ~Chris ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Mar 1998 00:52:40 EST From: Calvin 6S To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Validity of drummers Message-ID: To: Carol Dellinger Did you just miss the whole point? My response was in reference to all the jammers who stated that the guy (the one who defended Yngwie Malmsteen, a little too brazenly - can't blame him), being a drummer "explained everything". I have been around comments like this forever. Drummer jokes. That is why I prefaced that I understand some things are said in jest to lighten the mood, but it always seems to be the drummer who gets "beat up" the most. "First, I am a guitarist (who isn't)." - The only statement implied there is that guitar is the most overpopulated instrument, you know - who isn't. It is very hard to find drummers and keyboardists, especially ones that share common musical goals. It was meant to be self-deprecating. It was also meant to show that you don't have to be a drummer to appreciate drums, a guitarist to appreciate guitar, etc, etc. That was more towards the comment that another ytse jammer made stating something like "and you're a drummer. You shouldn't comment on guitar." That isn't what was said exactly, but that was definitely what was implied. So I absolutely don't understand your comment that I was implying only a guitarist can appreciate music. Or that a vocalist (as you are) isn't a musician. In fact, vocalists are the hardest thing to find. My whole point was that others should appreciate the other instruments (not that some don't now - I feel like I am running for office here or something. Can't offend anyone!! Gotta be PC!) How many times has somebody like Alex Skolnick stated he learned a lot from Charlie Parker? Is that to be taken that Alex has an ego? How? And why is it that if I analyze something and discover things that I had never thought of before in the process, that my eyes are closed. I think the exact opposite is true. I kind of understand what you mean about "just let the music take over you when you listen". Yes the writing comes from within, not from a book. All music theory is about is giving names to things you have already learned through listening and playing, as well as exploring the ones you haven't come across yet. Are you telling me there is no such thing as an influence? So Dream Theater would have written the same music they write today if they grew up without ever hearing any music? I can't say for sure, but probably not. True there is a difference between stealing and learning from previously recorded (or just performed) music. Are you implying that people who analyze music are void of creativity? I think it is only an enhancement that magnifies what is already there. I look at it more as "I really like what I am hearing. I want to dive into this and discover the subtleties of why I like over similar music." > Anybody who hears my songs tell me I could have been a drummer > (except for the fact that I can't play drums, they are right). You thought this was an ego trip on my part? Next time all include the rimshot for ya so you can tell it is self-deprecating! It's like saying "I'd be a great guitarist, if I only knew how to play." Get it??? > usually have no problem getting drummers to play my drum lines to my songs > exactly as I have written them (egos aside). So this is a big ego problem of mine too? Haven't you noticed that I feel uncomfortable repeating compliments I have received. That is why I always put a self-deprecating remark after anything that sounds like I may be tooting my horn. I'm not going to lie. I have been complimented for my songwriting. What am I supposed to pretend I suck so you can feel better? And I am sure for as many compliments I have heard there are many more that want to tell me I suck! >Sure! Between a fulltime job and being a single parent I have plenty of >time to learn to do that thing I don't know where this came from! Tell it to your shrink, not me. You could probably write a pretty angst-filled song with comments like this, or at least a pretty good country song! >OKay...why can't you just stop...open >your ears and your mind and just let the music take over you when you >listen...instead of trying to analyze it in your mind. You may find that >you can enjoy it! So by your theory, the best way to get inspiration is not take the time to look too deeply at something you enjoy. And when I decide to analyze it, my whole enjoyment is lost? If anything, my enjoyment is heightened. I would suggest you be the one to open your eyes and learn that there is nothing wrong with diving into something you enjoy! Oh wait, yeah the kid thing and the job thing. Forgot, you were the only one that had these things going on. And as far as the drummer defending Yngwie Malmsteen with all the zest he showed, what is wrong with that? So others can put him down, but he can't defend YM? I don't know if the jam was up when the Blind Melon dudes attacked Petrucci, but I am sure the jam was full of remarks defending JP with as much emotion as the drummer defending YM was. I'll give you the fact that this is the "YTSE Jam", but that doesn't mean all other points are inevitably invalid. Just not as valuable, na just messin with ya. I am the guitarist to put all other guitarists to shame. I piss on the grave of Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen!! I wave donuts in Yngwe's face and ask him if he wants one!!! TOOT-TOOT On a let's get on with it note: Received LTE in the mail today. It's amazing. II don't agree it is where DT might have gone after IAW like others have said. I just think it is a great extension of four very talented musicians that can write and play excellent music on a whim!!! And before somebody so easily gets offended, no I don't think my remarks have any bearing on the lives of other people except the fact they may just decide to buy it if they hear enough good things about it. ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 3586 **************************
