Or non-progressive for that matter. I love it when somebody posts a band they like (whether or not I eventually liking it is insignificant) and where to get some sound bytes. The latest one posted was Chaos Theory, as well as a mention that they will be releasing an album with Magna Carta. Does anyone know if and how many albums they already have out? What are some good sources for buying bands like this that I will never find in the average music store, as far as buying from the net. I did a search for Chaos Theory, but I guess there is a hardcore rap band named Chaos Theory that I kept coming up with. I love the sound byte of the progressive Chaos Theory I downloaded. It is a must for my collection. By the way, it really doesn't bother me to be "flamed" as I guess the term is called. You can say whatever you want about me concerning my previous "very opinionated" posts. It doesn't really bother me when I am attacked. It just doesn't serve a purpose. All it did for me was help me decide that I would rather not deal with taking on the task I had brought up if I had to empty my mailbox with all the complaints. I had just been trying to get some more Japanese Tab for two years, and I finally came up with something. I knew that there were probably other people out there (most likely on something like the ytsejam) that had been trying to do the same. As far as the general putdowns of other musicians, I wasn't even implying that what was being said should be stopped. I just find it very unproductive to put down a musician when it comes to the non-musical side of their lives. If Petrucci went bald and gained 400 lbs, he would still be my favorite guitarist. I just am probably more sensitive to this because the first part of my time at MI I was overweight and that seemed to make it harder to get into bands. The second half I had started to work out and even though I still wrote the same music, I was able to find more musician's to play with. It's as if some people hear music with their eyes. And I am not even denying that I have done the same thing to others. It is human nature to these things. But it is better if you can stop yourself every once in a while and decide if what you are saying really serves a purpose. We all say stupid things once in while. Oh, and I love Roger's comments concerning Green Day. He is obviously a jokester (probably a vocalist or drummer if stereotypes are true). It is almost as if he is coming out and saying "It's a big joke" without saying it. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Feb 1998 18:38:01 +1100 From: graham boyle To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Chaos Theory and other stuff Message-ID: Calvin 6S wrote: > The latest one posted was Chaos Theory, as well as a mention that they will be > releasing an album with Magna Carta. The songs they play on "Sesame Street" are just as > "great" as any virtuoso piece, because they succeed in connecting with > their target audience. You need to stop thinking that music sucks simply > because it doesn't move *you*. As long as it moves *someone*, it's valid. Partly true. What is meant by "valid"? Music meant for different audiences _can_ be compared -- it's not "apples and oranges." Music by Barney the Dinosaur intended for pre-schoolers and Bach intended for baroque-era mass attendees is intended for different audiences, but they contrast severly in content. Bach is clearly better when viewed by an intelligent listener (surprise: adults tend to be more intellectual than toddlers). As an old man/musician I can say that you can do a hell of a lot better than Green Day. It has energy, but I hate the fake punk English accent. Also, I think the severe guitar distortion of the genre supresses musicianship. How can a guitar player navigate when so much of the sound is muddied by all that noise? Why does the bass player play with a pick? Why does the singer sound like he got the job because his dad bought the PA equipment? I think music should hold more meaning than what pop alternative offers. It should be measured, meaningful, and passionate, not flung around like monkey feces just to see what flies. In summary, just because something holds the same amount of importance to a 16 year old dope smoker as something does for me doesn't mean that they carry the same validity. Message-ID: Well, personally, having got into Shrapnel releases, then almost as quickly leaving them behind, I don't have many favourites, but to me, these two CDs stand out: -Jason Becker; "Perpetual Burn". and -James Murphy; "Convergance". I like Perpetual Burn, simply coz of what's going on underneath the solos, as well as Jason Becker being a killer guitarist... (*sob*)..... The drumming kinda pisses me off, it's similar to the drumming on 'I&W' in that it seems to outline the time signatures, and go off into its own thing, as opposed to being more 'beat'-oriented (this is a bad term, but....). Unfortunately, the drummer (Atma Anur?) isn't as good at this as he would like to be. :) BUT, the keyboards especially are good on this album, there's actually some nice *song*-oriented shredding here..... 'Air' is a little mundane, but still quite nice, although the clean tone on this (and every other Shrapnel release I have heard) sucks harder than Traci Lords. The first track, 'Altitudes', and the last one, (shit, i forget the title.....), are my favourites. Convergance is more of a 'regular' metal record.... 4/9ths of the tracks even have vocals (2 by Devon Townsend, 1 by Chuck Billy, 1 by someone I forget.) The Allan Holdswort tune on this one is a bit different, but for the most part, this stuff is really good power-trio metal, with some great solos, less Yngwie-oriented than a lot of the Shrapnel roster of old........ There are a couple of duds, but overall, this is a very strong album indeed. On the Yngwie note, people seem to be forgetting one note: this guy bags out other musicians more than ANYONE. EVERY interview, he bags out EVERYONE mentioned, even other people up on his guitar level, notably Steve Vai. So saying it's unfair to bag out musicians, so therefore unfair to bag out Yngwie.... well, I'm sorry, but if anyone wants to bag him out, the retributionary costs have already been paid by Mr. Malmsteen. Are you finally flexable enough to suck > your own dick? :) First, congratulations for actually knowing what a uroboros is. According to my questions archive, you're the first. :) Second, a brief description. For all ye unclued, the uroboros is a symbol depicting the perpetual cycle of life and death. It is usually drawn as a snake devouring its own tail, forming an unbroken circle. (or, as Andreas likes to picture it, a ytsejammer devouring his own genitalia, forming an unbroken chaotic pretzel of twisted limbs) You can see a uroboros on the title screens of the television show "Millenium." Agent Scully ("The X-Files") had one tattooed on her rear end. Third, I chose the name because I think it's a cool symbol (plus...you know...it WOULD be kinda cool if I could suck myself off). "Uroboros" spelled correctly was already taken on AOL, so I added some more s's to make the word sound like what a snake would actually say - uroborosss (hissing, get it? GET IT???). And you thought the yinyang was the most simple and streamlined "perpetual" symbol out there...TWO whales in a circle? We gots ONE creature over here, and it encircles ITSELF, BOYYYYYY!! "Yeah right! Let's face it, you picked the name because you wish you were on Agent Scully's ass!" Yeah yeah, don't we all? Yep he is fast and faster still and that's all he seems to be. JP runs circles around him, he has one thing that Yngwie dosen't have VARIETY. Yngwie seems to play the same type of fast un melodic solo in every song, and his songwriting isn't even in the same league as JP's not to mention Yngwie's poor 'baby I love you, it's so true' type of lyrics. Fast dosen't mean better by any degree..... Wait till you hear Liquid Tension Experiment, JP smokes it up... > So Fuck all you opinionated MOTHERFUCKERS. I say that just to point out that a person doesn't have to be a "guitar player" to know what the fuck he's talking about(so I say fuck a lot...Fuck You). I just got out of a band where one of the guitarists had a JCM 900, but it was one of the newer ones, with 6L6 power tubes. Just after I left this band, I started jamming with another guitar player that also had a JCM 900. But on sight I could see that this one was a lot older, and when I heard it, Holy Shit, it was heavy. Just a word of knowledge about JCM 900's- it really depends on the power tubes as to how the amp will sound- if you don't want to spend the resources required to find an older Marshall amp, then I would suggest getting the "Slash" Signature model JCM 900- it has EL34 tubes in it already. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Feb 1998 02:04:34 -0700 From: "KorgX3" To: Subject: There's a Fire in the House! First of all, let's back up a second. Maybe we oughtta ask John if he'd even want to play a Malmsteen solo. I dunno about John but I'd laugh in your face and ask you to play me a Billy McLaughlin song. Speed does not equal good. "Look mommy! I can play a 64th note chromatic run at 300 bpm! It may sound like shit but at I'm the fastest guitar player in the world." No offense, but Yngwie's stuff sounds to me like pirate music. When I hear Yngwie I get scurvy. If you like it, that's fine, I just don't want to eat another one of my dad's loafers for dinner tonight, thank you very much. So Yuckface can play guitar fast, but can he reconstruct Beethoven's Pathetique on a Didgeridoo?
