It was awesome. You guys think bass players like Ah. Another flecktones convert. i've been a fan of the tones for a couple of years now, and i have to say that they are incredible musicians. Vic's pretty well-known in bass circles, for obvious reasons. i believe that when it comes to playing, he's on another level. The albums, including his solo work, tell part of the story, but seeing him live is something altogether different. i've seen him solo twice and with the tones about 8 times, and he never ceases to amaze. Bela's a banjo god, and the tones' mixture of jazzgrass, funk, blues, and whatever has really made traditional bluegrass more accessible. The sax/horn player was Jeff Coffin, who's been touring with them for about a year. He's a monster. And don't forget about Future Man, no doubt the most underrated Flecktone but just as vital as the rest of them. Whom else do you know who playes a Synthaxe Drumitar? Bela and the tones have played and recorded with some of the best traditional bluegrass and modern musicians out there, including Tony Trischka, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, Tony Rice, David Grisman, Sam Bush, Chick Corea, Hornsby, and probably dozens of others i don't know about. Many musicians on this list are probably familiar with the Flecktones. Anyone who isn't should really check them out. They're not prog (they're not even rock), but they're amazing nonetheless. Their chops, musicality, and improvisational ability will make you sit up straight and believe it. And, they're coming to Johns Hopkins tomorrow night!! - ilya ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Feb 1998 21:14:49 -0500 From: email_address_removed (Jeff Keifling) To: email_address_removed Subject: Liquid Tension Message-ID: I've put a review of the Liquid Tension Experiment on the Audio Vision website (along with an interview with Yes for those interested): http://ww4.choice.net/~teakwood -Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Feb 1998 18:11:49 PST From: "Stephanie Beaulieu" To: email_address_removed Subject: LYON... February 1998 Do not frighten, if should see its Dream theatre on this route: Power you calm on a further hair-technical surprise ...! Ty Tabor, John Myung, Derek Sherinian and Rod morning morgenstein are practically finished with the accommodationaccommodation accommodations for their project. Half of the Songs is good with singing, the remainder instrument valley. One may be strained ... . 18. February 1998 Becomes times again Zeir for News, even if not too much is to be reported. For " Metropolis pt. we will have to wait 2 " still somewhat longer. The tape wants to nevertheless only also pack its 25-minuetiges Opus approximately on the next complete album. Nevertheless Mike speaks to want to go still this year apart from the various routes and Festivalauftritten for a few accommodations into the studio. Which - and for which - to be taken up is, is however still located in the asterisks. Boringly wird's young surely not: After that liquid Tension experiment - the album is by the way to be published on 10 March von Roadrunner in Europe - is the second larger Dream theatre side branch in the start holes. Ty Tabor, guitarist and CO singer von King's X, zusammengetrommelt JohnMyung , Derek Sherinian and Rod morning morgenstein for a still nameless project. The accommodations for - in such a way it means - a rather songorientiertes album are imminent, in Europe to be published are it against May with InsideOut/SPV. A further project, with which John Myung would mix together allegedly gladly, carries the work title Gordian Knot. Sean Malone (ex-Cynic) clamped beside John its former Bandkumpanen Sean Reinert as well as Ron Jarzombek (Watchtower) , to Trey Gunn (King Crimson) and Adam Levy. Sometime toward at the end of February is to be brought in this album and be appeared then in the summer with The Laser's Edge. John Myung is intended as as Special Guest, but whether with the close time schedule is to be made, it is questionable. John Petrucci brought meanwhile few guitar TRACKS in for Steve a Howes " The Classical Project ", beside other well-known rule such as Trevor Rabin, Peter Frampton, Marty Friedman and Vince Gill. " Magellan meets JP ": Trent and Wayne Gardner of Magellan lifted a project for Magna Carta named " The Age OF Impact " from the baptism. Beside the two on the album: John Petrucci, Derek Sherinian, James LaBrie, matt Guillory (key board) and matt Bradley (Vocals) of chaos Theory, D. C Cooper (Vocals) of Royal Hunt as well as Billy Sheehan (bass) and Terry Bozzio (Drums)! James could have however in the next time fewer time for any part-time works remaining - finally he became even for the second time father. If you should have asked you, what came during the change break with the concerts in December off the line: That were the demos of all unpublished TRACKS of the last album - and directly before Vanden Plas ran the album from liquid Tension experiment. With the indescribably leave Coverversion of " Under A Glass Moon", which was played as Rausschmeisser, to have Dream theatre however nothing to do directly. This DT meets Sinatra version originates from tape from new jersey - it means at least. During the Show in Hamburg saw a further, although fewer serious project the light of the music world: Nicky Lemmons and The Migraines (or so) with its first and only Song " I don't like you ". Derek as Shouter of a Punkband, which had to come sometime times. Otherwise no surprises, the remaining instruments served the also otherwise responsible persons, although with a much broader Grinsen in the face... Also during the Shows in Japan there was a small premiere: " Speak to of ME ", officially so far only on the Japanese bonus CD of the last album available, emerged surprisingly in the set ruse. Kevin of moorlands decided after lengthy Hickhack for measure acre record as European selling for Chroma key. the album " DEAD air For radio " is to appear on 6 June. To hear Marks of Zonder ( Drums) and Joey Vera ( bass)of Fates warning are as well as me unknown quantities named Jason Anderson one at the guitar beside Kevin. ------------------- There you go, - __ Adrian. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Feb 1998 13:03:40 +0100 From: Dominique De Jesus Oliveira To: email_address_removed Subject: Tonight Dream Theater in Paris Message-ID: Hi jammers, I can't wait, it's 1:00 PM , 6 hours left to be with the Best Group in the World !!! If I can get a hold of Sean Malone, I'll ask for his oppinion. I'm sure he'll have a very valid oppinion on the matter :-) >I have played a Hamer 5 string w/ a 2TEK and I must say I was *impressed* >at the difference it makes... if they only made a 6 string model, too, I'd >rip the old bridge (a halfway massive construction, too) off my six string >the day before yesterday... :-) No shit, IMSNHO this is state of-the art. Well, Carvin has it available as an option and they don't say it's not available for 6-strings, so I guess there IS a 6-string version out there. >Heh... I've also been wondering what this might sound like. I didn't know >of any other manufacturer who used alder for the neck. Just more of the >typical alder sound? :-) Indeed could be interesting to give it a shot. I personally think that too much maple ruins the sound a little. Maple might be fine for neck-thru 4s and small 5s, but on a large 6-string like the Carvin it sounds "boring" as you put it. Same thing with the Yamaha 6-string neck-thrus I played (and a store here in Tampa had 2 of those used!!!). The sound tends to be a little too "plastic" rather than organic - maple just isn't a resonating wood. But on the other hand, it's hard to spend a grand just to be the guinea pig and the first to try one of those alder basses :P I have no idea what they'll sound like, but I'm SO curious :-) >I have played a six string fretless w/ poplar sides and a Wilkinson bridge >which lacked definition on the B string, otherwise also was pretty boring >somehow. Another one I've played was a 4 string fretted w/ poplar sides and >a quilted maple top, again w/ a Wilkinson bridge, but this one was like the >best "Jazz Bass" I've seen in a long time, very dynamic... also well suited >for pizz, slap and pick alike. (And don't bother to retell that old joke >that bass players using a pick were frustrated guitar players as I bothered >to learn guitar only after having played bass for years already :-)) I think some basses and amp configurations are meant to be played with a pick. I don't use a pick and I'm an ex-guitar player, but I think it's a very personal choice. I sure don't think Chris Squire is any less of a bass player because he uses a pick often. Take care, Christian. ____ ____ ____ /\ /\ /\/\ /\ / / /\/ /\/ /\\ /\ /__/ / / \/ \__/ / / /___/ /___/ \\/ \____ /\ \ / / / \/ / / / / /\ \ // \ / / \ / / / / / / / / \___\// / / / / / /__ /__ / / / / / /\ / / / \ \ \ \ \\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ / / \___\_\_\__\\__\__\___\_\___\_\___\_\__\__/ / \_________________________________________/ "Kill her. So I consider the stuff like LTE just another creative outlet. ah, anxiously awaiting march 10th, am i.... i was reading on "under a cyber moon" (the official DT website, as far as i'm concerned) how magical the songwriting chemistry was between jordan rudess, john p, and mike. i also recollect how rudess toured with DT briefly following kevin's departure, and how he was considered as a replacement before (from what i gather, anyway) he elected to work with the dixie dregs. now, as i said in the subject, this is purely speculative, but i wonder if there was any hint of regret on JP or MP's part, seeing how incredible rudess worked with them on the songwriting process. i mean, they already experienced how incredible he is live, both playing with them and later opening for them with the rudess/morgenstein project, so this was the final dimension of experiencing what it would be like to work with him as a bandmate. i call this pure speculation, because derek truly is brilliant, and a truly special player. where kevin had a more classical approach, derek's is, as has been frequently discussed, more jazz-oriented. jordan's style, in this repect, is much closer to kevin's. having worked with derek on DT's jazziest effort to date (FII), and now working with rudess, it makes me wonder if maybe the guys have some slight regrets about working with derek, as opposed to another player who would write more in kevin's style. again, speculation. i know that every interview supports everyone's happiness with derek, and i know that what i'm talking about exists only in the heads of JP and MP. still, it does make me curious. --MATt ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Feb 1998 12:08:00 -0500 (EST) From: K I L L M A R Y To: email_address_removed Subject: Those damn bass players AGAIN!!! Message-ID: Yo. I just talked to Sean Malone, and what he told me is that he uses regular nickel roundwounds for his fretless (DR for those interested). What he did though, was that he had a luthier put on a coating on top of his fingerboard for protection. He has an ebony fingerboard and polyester was used - for rosewood, polyurethane should be used (just because one material sticks better than the other). The result did affect the sound, however - it took away from the "wood" sound and made it sound a bit more like a synthetic neck. It added brightness to the sound, which in Sean's case was exactly what he wanted, and he's got, in my oppinion, one of the best fretless sounds out there, so I think it worked :-) It still retained some of the wood character, however, which is also cool. Plus, wood necks can be adjusted, so I do think that this is the best of both worlds. Now, i dont know if this affects the sound quality (the samples sound good anyway), but i think that the other sites that offer mp3 s should (if they can) zip the songs. I mean, the LiTS demo is like 7.2 Megs, and the download time is like an hour minimum, it would be cool if songs this long were zipped, so you could download the in just 3 minutes or so.
