It is NOT a virus. A virus has to be executed to work, opening an email message that is not set to automatically decode then execute a program (I'm not sure this is possible unless one scripts this to happen with Applescript or it's PC equivilent if one exist). The easiest ways to protect yourself from a virus are use an anitvirus software that checks your downloads (Norton, Sam, Virex etc), delete binary attachments from people that you don't know (I've been on the net for more thatn three years and I have never had this happen to me, don't use Microsoft Office (the single biggest source of virii in the world is Word 5 and 6 Macros virii), or buy a Mac (which have less than 20 known virii, excluding Word almost none of which are serious). Both are mostly trading of b00ts [1], discussion of shows (the ones being traded), and discussion of topics only marginally related to PF [2]. [1]: on echoes, these are called RoIOs, Recordings of Illegitimate/Indeterminate Origin, which sounds sort of like oreo, which is further bastardized as "cookie". Eventually we have come to refer to bakeries... :) [2]: we actually went at least a week-and-a-half on the topic of religion (as related to PF) with only one proselytizer, and the thread died out quietly soon after that. hold on, this post was supposed to have a point... lemme think... ah, wtf. i lost it. The Echoes FAQ may be something to use as an example for stuff to add to the DT one, i guess. ftp://ftp.halcyon.com/pub/pink_floyd/echoes_faq has the soon-to-be obsolete version. Oh, oh! Some years ago, when someone would tell me such things I think that my only reaction would be to laugh at that person. Today, on the other hand, those e-mail programs are getting sooooo "smart" (that was sarcastic, if you can't tell) and trying to do as much work for the user as they can that they've become very dangerous, doing disservices instead of really helping the users. That is, if you can disable some "facilities" of your e-mail program such as automatically decoding programs attached to e-mails and loading your Word for Windows, then do it *NOW*. Since Word can execute some pretty powerful macros that can destroy the contents of your hard drive, you should not load any text from, how can I say, promiscuous sources. If you're using Unix, then you're probably fine with such things, because nothing will get you very easily. I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to copy this reply to the Ytsejam, because it's pretty informative and a lot of people might be interested to know this stuff. Ryan's using the good stuff. I use that too. Verbatim silver/blue (which is supposed to become silver/silver with their next product revision this spring) is by far the most reliable, best-playing, most widely supported, most aesthetically pleasing, and most available-wholesale-in-quantity media out there. Plus, it's surface printable, which makes a HUGE difference now that I'm doing on-the-disc images (which Ryan himself may eventually do as well).=20 When I rate a media, first I check to see if it works well in a lot of different machines. I try each brand as a written CD-ROM in up to six different computers (four of mine and two friends') for potential problems. Then I try it in each of the 4 Cd players and 1 laserdisc player as an audio disc, I have everything from the good Pioneer LD player to a crappy portable Aiwa to even a Sega CD player. Then I burn some game discs and see how it works in the Playstation and Saturn (modified systems of course). So far, only the Verbatim silver/blues have worked perfectly for all purposes and have had a minimum of problems. It's not the cheapest media available... I can get CMC, Memorex, Maxell, and 3M Imation all cheaper... but in the long run, I save money on reliability and all the "hidden costs" that I never have to deal with. As for the other media, well... Maxell gold/gold ain't bad and it is great for the game systems. Problems are that it has a tendency to have write errors and failures, for reasons unclear. (If I could figure it out I might use that media more!!) Plus, it's not printable-surface, and you often have to buy it retail because the better wholesalers only really offer TDK and Verbatim. CMC and Memorex are just cheap city. Failures all over the place. My CDR drives (Teac 4x4) actually spit out CMC discs as "unsuitable to be written upon" nearly half the time! TDKs work OK as audio discs but are terrible in CD-ROM drives and for games. They skip like a Broadway dancer in the Playstation. 3M imation is visually unappealing but is fundamentally decent. It just looks so unprofessional to have their logo plastered all over my work. :) One final media, called Signature Tuffcoat, came with my CD disc image printer, and it seems about identical to the 3M media functionally, but the surface is solid white and printable, and you can get some fantastic picture discs this way. I'm using it for the Imaginirium print run and perhaps another pic disc down the road. --=20 - Mike Bahr / Prism Records - durnik @ goodnet . com - http://www.goodnet.com/~durnik/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Feb 1998 16:11:02 -0700 From: Michael Bahr To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 3535 Message-ID: email_address_removed wrote: Replies to several folks here. > Man, pull the corn-cob out. Well, that won't happen for a good while, so you're in good shape for the time being. I know there is a market out there for "basic dubs" (which is what I call CDRs like the ones you're dealing in) because many people are upgrading existing recordings and the like. So right away when I saw your post I knew you were going to have plenty of customers. The question now is just how many it will end up being. > Unlike you, I won't > mind hanging it up, because I don't depend on this for income, and I don't> want it to be an everlasting business. Plus, I expect to get hit Well, even if you didn't want to depend on it, a lot of people try to make the hobby pay at least for itself, so that it can self-perpetuate no matter their personal situations. For example now that Melissa has gone back to professional work (yellow pages), she covers a great deal of my living costs, freeing up budget to be used on things like buying a disc image printer (which just happened). I'm sure you'll at least come close to breaking even at $10 per disc when you're offering basic dubs with no mastering overhead. I guess I had figured you would do like me and the others and attempt to set up a structure; a business model if you will; for which early work will make later work possible. I didn't realize you weren't in it for the long haul, but rather as something to do for the time being. > beginning, and then for it to die off. How long do you think orders for > DoE will keep coming in. I might get 10 orders for it within the first > month, and then what? maybe 1 every couple months. There's no Well, you'd be surprised on that one. You may not get too many orders for copies of my stuff (since people with net access usually have it already), but the Jam is steadily growing, and each new collector has a tendency to cover the "bases" by ordering TDOE, Mind Control, AKIAD, CIA97, Uncovered, Lost in the Sky, and InstruMental II. Naturally, these are the first ones that I have upgraded production on, and yet you will still doubtless receive a steady stream of basic dub orders. > I'm making cheap generic copies of CDs that already exist. You're > compiling material for CDs that no one else has. You should charge more,> simply for the time involved, not to mention the fact that since you're the> sole creator of the product, you have a monopoly on the market. If people> want the new Bahr creation, they order from Bahr - Point taken. I had actually envisioned your dubbing offers gradually extending to include custom titles... hence the logic behind my original post. If you're never going to do those, you're gonna save a TON of time and money. Everything from custom liner printing to mastering equipment is part of the equation. If you never do custom stuff, then I may well be turning customers in your direction who ask me if it's possible to just get basic copies (and yes, I do get requests of that type), because I know that's your focus. > I can't see my project being that threatening to you, since CDr > duplicates is probably only 1% of your revenue, if not less. You Well, a rising tide lifts all boats, so I never felt threatened... indeed, you just provide more stuff for the collectors out there. I'd say CDR duplication is about 10% of my work these days. Of every ten blanks I get, I know at *least* nine go to Prism discs. > I'll be honest > with you, if someone asks me to copy Acoustic Dreams, I'll do it. If Well, of course.. I mean, you're not Mother Teresa here. If someone asks me to copy Final Fantasy 7 or Windows 95 OSR3, I don't shed a tear for Square, Sony, or M!crosoft. It's to be expected. > don't think people should get it from me, then you can always offer a no > cover/liner copy for $9. Then, I'll have to pack it up and go home. See, I won't be doing this, and I think this is why Ryan, Neil, and Joe don't do it either. The plain fact is that (this is an educated guess on the part of the other gentlemen, but it was my reasoning, so I'm sure they've thought it out the same way) we would rather build a solid business model, a solid production engine, than attempt to use snipe tactics to kill the market and then clean up the mess as the only person standing. The market itself thrives so much more from additional product than it would from wasting resources trying to sink someone else's boat. Because the customer really doesn't care *who* gives them the CD as long as they get the stuff they want. > to be honest, I really figured that because you are so busy already, > that> you would welcome my involvement in the DT boot scene. It'll be some measure of relief from the basic dub requests, yes. > Mike is IBM, and I'm just a Dell. IBM? Heh... good one. Nah, Kiss The Stone is IBM. We're a bunch of local wholesalers doing our best to win over the hardcore crowd with as good a deal as we can offer. To all: you'll be happy to know that, only for the lacking of enough liners and jewels for the production output I currently have, that not only the PT backlog but the TDOW backlog is now caught up also!!! The update due out tonight or tomorrow will show around 60 TDOW's left, but at least 50 of those are already made and awaiting fresh packaging.
