But that's just it, Bernardo, I reject the notion that the music is unimportant. You have to give a better argument than "It's nil because it's unimportant...and it's unimportant because it's meaningless." That borders on tautological. I LIKE this music quite a lot. And, while I kn= ow "real" Yes fans (I've got more than half the catalog and I've seen them three times, so I'd at least like to think I have more than a cursory awareness of the band) tend to prefer, say, "Close To The Edge," I don't. I think "Close to the Edge" is a great album. I think "Big Generator" is= a greater album. It's laden with all kinds of musical ideas, and it IS a nuanced record with a reasonably large amount of musical exploration in i= t. It may not be in the context of a 20 minute suite, but I'd argue that it= 's more than valid, which is miles beyond nil. >Look at the band now that he's gone (for good, I hope): Chris Squire is = back >playing like a beast again! I think Squire has ALWAYS played like a beast, and I think he's got as ma= ny interesting musical ideas on, say "90125" as the new record. >Everybody's got some room to explore, and there's enough space for >everybody to have an input in the final outcome! There are a lot of times in there when everyone going full-tilt has worke= d for Yes. I still think there are times when SOMEONE could have backed of= f a little bit and played a more supportive role...and I'm the biggest fan = of excessive music -- hell, I even like Chris Impelliteri. But I don't hear the Rabin-era records as an extension of one man's ego. I DON'T think they're well-described as solo records. Perhaps they SHOULD have called themselves "Cinema," rather than "Yes" during that period, because they certainly played with a different sound. But bands DO change things up from time to time -- Rush, Tull, Genesis, and Metallica are all bands I have a tremendous amount of respect for for that very reason. Why can't = a band "explore" in a direction that doesn't involve polytonality? >In time, when speaking of Yes in the future (and even now, damn >it!), Close to the Edge, Fragile, Going for the One and Relayer will >first come to mind as the exponents of Yes music. I think you might be right -- at least among their biggest fans. I think you've got to stick "The Yes Album" in there somewhere, along with "Topographic," but I think that period is seen by most people as Yes' bes= t work. I might even agree (I think "Fragile" and "The Yes Album" are probably their two best records). But I think the work the Rabin-era Yes did is impressive in its own right and is not to be dismissed out of hand. >90125, Big Generator and Talk don't contribute to their legacy (they'll = be >merely regarded as =91the commercial recordings'), and if it weren't >for the big sales of Owner of a Lonely Heart, they would go unnoticed.=20 >Lastly, if you like Yes' more commercial stuff, that's one thing, >but to say that the Rabin-era Yes is good, that's something very >different! I don't get this last sentence at all... But the first: Why the hell can't a commercial success be perceived as contributing to a band's legacy. They're tremendous records, and, last I checked, they played a few of those songs live. So I don't think the band's tried to play down those records at all. As for the new >studio stuff, I like it all, but I think the stuff on KTA 2 is >perhaps a little better. first off, i must admit that i was a touch out of class by saying it sounded like 10 week old smegma. i'll save that for truly horrid things. and yes, i am aware that the live performances come from the same set of shows. maybe one night was drastically better or different? i don't know, paul. i picked up the first kta, and i fell totally in love with yes again. that version of "revealing science of god" was just simply amazing. a lot of the live stuff on disc one was just awesome. and even the studio stuff was ok. now mind you, paul- i've been very skeptical of old prog bands writing new music. most of the new albums by these bands (i.e., elp's "in the hot seat") are usually piss poor. however, the studio stuff on kta I was actually a lot better than average. however, i really didn;t get the same effect on kta II. you've already hear my rant about how bad i think "close to the edge" sounded (and that's one of my fave yes tunes). and son, you got a lot of courage to be saying that the studio stuff on kta II is actually better. but you're allowed to. i guess we listen to it differently. lastly, i will agree that people trying to decide which one to get should go with their favorite classic yes tunes. i guess i just hope people aren't going to hope that "close to the edge" was amazing. it's a decent performance, but it should've been done a lot better. cheers. ytsegoon ************************************************************************ david y. kobayashi the new york law school email_address_removed "i'm the monster you created in your daddy's name." -j. petrucci ************************************************************************ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Feb 1998 23:33:21 -0500 From: Beth Elzinga To: "'email_address_removed'" Subject: That was wierd.... This is a STRONG BUY ;>. funny that you should mention the production of SB as being one of the strong selling points for the band..... because if there is anything that I would caution about with Spock's Beard it would have to be the production... the drums especially. The snare has no depth.. the cymbals sound like little splishes (ala Images and Words) and for some reason i can't explain the bass drum bothers me... the reason why i mention this, and not just to complain... is that I was seriously wondering whether all the SB cds have that same "sound" or if they've tweaked it a little.. gotten a little more "lively" sound? trains, bruce forst email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Feb 1998 09:18:44 -0500 From: "Metzger, Mark" To: "'(ytsejam)'" Subject: DT FAQ Message-ID: >> OK, enough sentimental yapping. I am hoping that they will concentrate on some of the things that have been missing from the FAQ for a while...in particular... MUSIC INFORMATION!!!!! Now, not all would be interested in this, but I bet there is a strong correlation between liking DT and being a musician (I would bet over half of the Jammers play some kind of instrument). The FAQ is good, but I'm not nearly as interested in what specific time during the movie a sample was taken from, or the connection between Hamlet and Pull Me Under, as I am in: * equipment lists for _each_ player during _each_ album Much has been said on the Jam recently about what kind of Trinity board Derek is using. This stuff should be in the FAQ! Personally, I would love to see what John P. has been using on every album. Same with Mike P. and John M. This has been documented in magazines before, but it is time to pull it all together now in one place. And then get it "officialized" by the band themselves. Maybe they would even shed light on how they set it up. What kind of strings do they use? What kind of picks? What kind of speakers? How do they set their EQ? Etc, etc. * information about the various sheet music and videos available by DT Like the TAB books, the instruction videos, where to find them, availability, current price, etc. * how about a compiled list of the various influences for each members and recommended albums Like Petrucci has done in various magazines over the years. But since the maintainer of the FAQ will have some direct contact with the band, he should be able to get this kind of information from the whole band. I could go on. But I hope you get the idea. What kind of things would you musicians like to see in the FAQ? I feel like the musical aspect has been almost totally ignored in the FAQ up to this point. I mean, think about it....here is a person who will have some contact with the band. Isn't it about time we started using that power for more information that just "was that sample at the beginning or end of Dead Poet's Society, Mike?" We can keep all that going. It is interesting and funny at times. But "where's the beef?"
