You're gonna hate Symphony X. The word "Symphony" should have clued you in. There's no such thing as too Classical, IMO. (Yes, trainspotters, I know it's usually Baroque, but Classical gets the point across. :) ) Here's something you probably already know: I listened to The Dance of Eternity yesterday (not for sale) for the first time in a while. This cd is essential for any DT fan. First off, it has EVERY song from I&W on it PLUS To Live Forever and Eve! It also has A Fortune in Lies, The Killing Hand and an almost 10 minute Ytse Jam with an insane drum solo. To top it off there's a 20 minute A Change of Season with a part VI that will blow your ass away. The sound is really good, too. James' voice is a little ragged, but he pulls off the high note in LtL. Also in LtL, Kev makes a tiny mistake in the intro to prove that he is, in fact, merely mortal. Message-ID: Just wondering why anyone would be prepared to pay this sort of money for a bootleg. I mean isn't it's collectabillity completely contrived. This is a bootleg plain and simple. A lot of people have access now to a digital recording device i.e MiniDisc or CD-R, and since this is not an official release, why should anyone have any problem with making their own digital copies. OR, buying / trading a CD-R copy for a few bucks. There's no special merit in a silver CD for me, or a liner not made by the band. It's a boot for god's sake. Here's my advice, find a friend with CD-R and flog copies for $10 each, - over $5 profit for you and you don't have to sell the original, and lots more people have the original material - which , incidentally, belongs to DT , and DT alone. Now, I'm sure I'll get some stick for saying that, but the point is that I can buy the material on tape boots for 1 blank cassette or a couple of bucks. The material belongs to DT ( or, from another point of view, to everyone ) so I expect to pay for the cost of the media, and a little more, to cover time spent. Boots like this should be available freely at a reasonable price, and the excessive overheads of Mr Bahr's business combined with what seems like a taboo on propagating his stuff on CD-R means I have to pay upwards of $40 if I want some of these things on CD. So there... Flame away... Somehow I highly doubt that Promised Land is their greatest work. I would have to say it's a toss-up between Mindcrime/The Warning. The playing style was a little heavier and Tate was still singing instead of screaming. I do, however, agree that Chris was a major driving force within the band not to mention one helluva talented musician. Jim PS This is just an OPINION, so any jerky flames will be ignored. Discussion, however, is most welcome. -- "We are all books of blood, as soon as we're open we're red" --Clive Barker ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jan 1998 14:17:57 +0100 From: NGA To: "'email_address_removed'" Subject: Moonspell/Lacuna Coil Message-ID: Hi all here are my first reviews for this year. WARNING: die-hard prog fans can turn off now. People with wider ranges in musical taste should read on. MOONSPELL - Pecado Sin This is Moonspell's third full-length album, and this should be the one = that establishes them as one of the best bands on the international goth/doom scene. The band have matured a lot since their last album 'Irreligious', = both musically and as individuals, and this maturity shows on this album. = Every- thing about this album just sounds and feels right - Fernando's singing has improved even more, and he can now fall back on a number of vocal styles ranging from clean to gruff to cookie monster, the guitar work is also very clean (Ricardo even sounds like Petrucci on a couple of = tracks) and it doesn't dominate the sound like it did on the last albums. The major = change is in the keyboard department, with extensive use of samplers and programming, which makes the album sound a bit like 'One Second' by Paradise Lost but without being a copy/clone. This album is still very = much Moonspell, it's just that they have thrown off the vampires and = werewolves image. The general overtone of the album is still dark and questioning = (well, what else can you expect from an album that has sin as it's theme?), but some tracks are even almost danceable. My personal favourites are 'Magdalene', 'V.C. (Gloria domini)', 'Handmadegod' and 'Let THe Children Cum To Me' (yes, that is the spelling on the cover). Anal-retentive = Bible bashers may object to some of the lyrics, but then they probably = shouldn't buy this album in the first place. I'm looking forward to hearing these = new=20 songs live. I don't like the single '2econd Skin' so I'm only giving = this album 9.5/10. LACUNA COIL - Lacuna Coil This EP is the first release by Moonspell's Century Media stable mates, = and a very good effort it is too. The best description I can think of is = dark/prog/ doom. The 6 tracks show that this band is undoubtedly very talented, but still needs a little more time and experience to really make it. The = overall sound is like The Gathering and Paradise Lost with a good dose of = Elbereth thrown in for good measure. Vocal arrangements are excellent, the work = being shared by Andrea Ferro and the beautiful Cristina Scabbia. My only = real criticism is that there is no really dark and gloomy track on the = album, but that might come with time. I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more of = this band in the near future. 8/10. Incidentally, both albums were recorded at the Woodhouse Studios and produced/co-produced by Waldemar Sorychta (Sentenced, Tiamat, The Gathering, Alastis, Samael). If Dream Theater used him next time, = perhaps some of you people would lay off Kevin Shirley (just because he produced the first Silverchair album, or what?). Who are the Denver Broncos and why are there 31 of them? stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) (http://www.rotten.com) Currently playing: The Garden Of Delight - Scheoul ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jan 1998 23:41:48 -0500 From: "Alex O'Connell" To: email_address_removed Subject: Conception Message-ID: Kevin Madden scribbled: >CD of the Day: Conception - Parallel Minds >CD #2 of the Day: Conception - In Your Multitude Thank you brother.
