Message-ID: Hi After reading many a post here about Echolyn, I decided to check with my provider Cranium Music. Richard Stockwell (from Cranium) has confirmed to me that he's got a small supply of Echolyn's titles ('As the World' and' When the Sweet Turns Sour') available. I ordered their 2 CD's available, and they're due to arrive after Cranium receives a pair of CD's by an Italian band from the 70's called Il Rovescio della Medaglia, from whom I will post something as soon as it gets here! So, going back to Cranium Music, you can reach them in: www.cranium.co.na Or contact Richard Stockwell: richard@cranium.co.nz I can't remember, but I think the prices are about 25$A (about 18US$, plus shipping, of course). I don't care about a solo that's hidden in a song and tends to ruin the flow of the music - but I love solos that stand out as improvised songs themselves... Shut up and play yer guitar! <- take this as an advise and as the reference album for guitar-solos. BTW: recently there was a discussion about soloing on the Phish newsgroup and someone mentioned the following: [excerpt from mail:] Frank Zappa wrote about how many soloists, including many in his band, would play what he termed "Volcano Solos." These are the typical solos on starting quietly and low in range, then building it up louder, faster, and higher in pitch, until the soloist finally climaxes or the volcano erupts. This, Zappa claimed, was a completely sexual technique used by musicians to get the blowjob after the show. He felt it was a cheap and musically boring technique. I kind of see it as playing straight up instead of going sideways and exploring different dimensions. It seems that the members of Phish have come to realize this for themselves and are exploring the more sideways jamming instead of the straight up jamming, and i think that's a good thing. [snip] Something to think about!? I'm not quite sure about DT, but most of the solos seem to be of the Volcano-type... my 2/100 ECU - jerry :--) StoP caLcUlaTiNg ThE vAluE oF dReaM TheAtER sONgs MaTheMatICalLy oR wE WiLl coNtInUE To KIll oNe CeleBrITY EacH WeEK. - theRe ARe nO SkIinG "aCciDenTS". --------------------------------------------------------------- Andreas Schaefer jerry@muc.de ...bei 200 Grad 15 Minuten backen, und keine Eier! - Tool --------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jan 1998 07:41:39 -0600 From: email_address_removed (Mark Lampert) To: "Ytsejam" Subject: Beer Logic (Joke Message) Message-ID: <01bd2b29$4b84f4a0$message_id_removed> Ahoy, Here's some stuff my brother forwarded to me recently: B E E R L O G I C A herd of buffalo can move only as fast as the slowest buffalo, and when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular culling of the weakest members. In much the same way the human brain can only operate as fast at the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular comsumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, constantly making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. I used to be a big fan but I really don't have any desire to listen to the old stuff anymore so I doubt I'd find much to enjoy in Load (which for some reason I bought, but never listened to much) or Reload (which I have no intention of buying). But what I'm wondering is why when Metallica makes an album that's different from everything they've done in the past, they've sold out, and when DT does FII, they're just "maturing" and "playing from the heart" and "trimming the fat"? Sure Metallica's new image is sickening, but does anyone really think that if they just wanted to sell albums Metallica would have done something so drastically different? I know everyone says "Metal is dead", and supposedly Metallica knew this and tried to cash in on the alternative thing, but does anyone really think they wouldn't have sold ten bajillion albums even if they had just written another [insert the name of your favorite Metallica album]? And how hard would it really be for them to write that same album again? Not very. Alot of guitar players on this list could do it for them. Now what about Dream Theater. Well, yeah, their new album had lots more "commercial" songs on it too, but they're not really commercial, they're just "mature", right? Ok, and maybe they are a *little* more commercial, but c'mon, they've got families to feed, right? I love the way everyone on this open-minded list defends everything DT does and turns around and criticizes Metallica for doing exactly the same thing. (Yeah, I know, it's not really everyone, or even close to everyone, but we've all seen both types of posts from the same people). I'm certainly not defending Metallica here, like I said,I don't think I could possibly care enough to. But what's the difference, really, between what they did and what DT did? Metallica's old songs tended to be on the long side. Maybe James wanted to write material that was more "concise", so he "trimmed the fat". Yeah, that's it. -Clark ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jan 1998 09:32:59 -0500 (EST) From: Christian P Kremo To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: DT Movie/Musical Phenomena Message-ID: > I see real potential here. Actually I am ashamed to admit that I saw this movie and whoever posted that CIAW was in there was INCORRECT in two aspects. First of all, if CIAW was in there, I sure as hell would have remembered it, but it wasn't in there. Second, he mentioned that it was a 4-star movie. I've got one...next time I have dialysis I'll trade you it for a kidney, or something equally life saving. Here's a bit of DTC...has anyone ever noticed near the end of Anna Lee (don't have the CD handy so I can't put forth a time) there is a high sounding slinding descent that whenever I am in my car makes me think of a police siren, and hence I slow down and look all around to make sure I'm not being pulled over. Am I the only one who has noticed this? There is a similar thing on Helloween's Chameleon. There is part in "I Don't Wanna Cry No More" that always makes me get up to see if the phone is ringing. Just curious to see if anyone knows what I'm talking about. I had another question, but I think I'll just check the FAQ so as not to start another debate.
