It seems that many on here haven't though! If you read the above sentence as anything closely resembling "one keyboardist is better than the other," seek help :) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ They didn't play Scarred at the Hartford show, so I've yet to hear Derek pla yone of favorite DT songs, and which people are saying, he NAILED at other venues! Hey, I held up just fine, though. After all, he played LITS, parts of ACoS and JLMB (to name a few :) Curious, though, has he ever played 6:00 live? I was noticing how much fun it would be to hear that song live. And how much is going on in there with MP's fills/licks/riffs/whatchamacallits! Go back and listen to 6:00 from the perspective of the drums accompanying the rest of the players, as opposed to the traditional "bass/drums establish the rhythm upon which the song is built" perspective. This guy just knows when/where/what to play!! Anyways, the subject was about Derek (yeah, yeah, I know the subject is about Kevin...SHADDUP!! :):) I'd be willing to bet you that Derek would be all over that keyboard solo right before "Inside...." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So the word on the street is that Chromakey is out. Technically speaking, it only takes a WAV file containing the sound that you want to compress and then a compressor. Of course, you'll need something to play the compressed file (otherwise, it is useless :-)). > I'm thinking, once I get a pc, it'd be cool to make some samples of some of > the wacked-out stuff I listen to and send em to whoever wants em. So, I assume the WAV files you'll have are from CD? Then you'll need a CD-ripper to create these WAV files from your CD tracks. Message-ID: Maybe the whole JLB thread is really bogus and was actually started by the government in an attempt to out all the Ytsejam potheads? Just a stupid little idea. About Metroplis and persuasion tapes: I must admit that before I heard I&W I hadn't really been exposed to prog rock very much (except for Rush). PMU had just came out and was very big on the radio at the time. I liked PMU, but I had heard so much "balls and chunk" already at that point that I didn't think it was anything too out of the ordinary. Nevertheless I bought the CD, and ended up being blown away by the really prog stuff, such as Metropolis and LTL. Most common music listeners have never heard stuff like Metro before, and the "not being used to it" factor could actually push them towards stuff like this, at least that's how it was for me. I don't know about other areas, but here where I live YNM and BMS get played ALL OF THE TIME! They went from zilch to very solid spots in the rotation. They are bordering on getting played too much here, so I hope people don't get sick of them. -C# ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 10:50:50 -0800 From: Jim Beavens To: email_address_removed Subject: James Message-ID: <199801131850.KAA55590@pdx108> I'm glad to see that everyone's skepticism is alive regarding the KevMo sighting on IRC. However I'm curious why nobody has questioned the James "coffeehouse" sighting in Amsterdam (or Netherlands, or whereever that was). To the person who saw him there: did you actually see him lighting up? Or did you just see him in this particular establishment which has a certain reputation, and assume that he was there to partake of all available services? I know that I remain fairly ignorant of the drug scene, and I did not know that there were "coffeehouses" in foreign countries where it was legal to buy marijuana. At the same time, there have been numerous sightings of band members throughout this tour in bars and restaraunts grabbing a bite to eat before gigs. Isn't it possible that James had the same ignorance as me, and that this place was simply a convenient place to hang out before the concert? This isn't any kind of moral judgement on pot smoking, but this implication may very well be an insult to James (although unlikely considering some of the joking comments he's made about smoking a joint). I just hate to see rumors like this started without concrete evidence. If you actually saw him toking on a joint, or someone asks him if he smokes pot and he says, "yeah, so what?", then by all means continue this discussion. But until then, everyone should keep in mind that so far all we have to go by is assumptions. This is how all those annoying cancer rumors start... Message-ID: ]From Bruce Duesterhoeft >>>>>>>< Also regarding DT in Concert and others in concert. I'm wondering how much impact does the record company have on the shows. I mean count how many FII songs were played during the concerts. Think about Rush. They have 5000 albums out, yet this last tour they pass up to play some timeless to play new songs off TFE? Come on - you gotta think 75% of the people at the shows already have or heard stuff from the new album. Now take Yes's current tour - they have a shit little label and they only play 2 songs off their two albums that came out within in a month of each other? So I think that the record companies are requiring bands to play either a certain percentage of songs off of new CD's or bands are two lazy to relearn old stuff that people actually want to hear. <<<<<<<<<<<< well... DT has been around roughly ten years, and released 5 albums... yes has been around almost 30 years and released around 20 albums, I think the same goes for Rush, mebbe that is the reason? And with all this talk about Tangerine Dream, I decided to give my $.02... I've only heard a few TD albums (let's say 5) and I dig some of the stuff, some I don't like, but the new one (I think they haven't released anything after it?) called "Goblin's Club" is EXCELLENT... the local library here has it, and first time I heard it I wasn't blown away.. but after a few more listens it started to open.. (sounds a bit like some ppls exposure to DT) Whatever, I am just saying: get Goblin's Club, if you don't fall in love with it... then you don't :) op777 ------------------------------------------------------------- Olli-Pekka Komonen snail:Kutojantie 2, 13720 Parola, Finland e-mail: opk@hlti.fi phn:+358-3-6715036 cell:+358-400-498 266 ------------------------------------------------------------- "YOUTAKEMYLIFEANDI'LLTAKEYOUR'STOO!!!" -Kevin Moore "Very positive message" -James LaBrie ------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 22:19:51 +0200 From: O-P Komonen To: email_address_removed Subject: David Said... The mellotron has a lot to do with it, obviously; but the overall feel of the first couple of tracks, rhythmically and melodically, took me there. For those of you who don't know who Gentle Giant is, they were considered to be one of the most progressive bands in the 70's and early 80's. SB appears to be carrying on the tradition quite nicely. I also hear a symphonic rock type of sound in there at times (think YES :). This band quite clearly, though, has their own sound as well. They are musically gifted individuals with a real sense of how to deliver the groove. The vocal harmonies are sweet, the rhythmic changes that are going on are enough to keep even the proggiest of prog-heads stimulated, one just can't help but get up for these guys! Mike was right! Currently, the song June is my favorite. There are portions in the beginning of June, where during the first listen, I was imagining where I wanted them to take it, and that not only took it there, but went beyond it :) I'm sure that, as with Dream Theater, most if not all of the tracks will regularly leapfrog each other in a constant battle for my love and attention :) Reading the liner notes I notice not one, not two, but three different musicians in there who play keys: two primary, one now and then. I thought I'd throw this out there knowing that some of you will embrace and rationally discuss the concept, while others will completely fly off the handle..... I enjoy both: one for the opinions, the other for the fodder :) Ok, ok, here it is: What if Kevin came back AND Derek stayed? Could the world survive that much synth sound?
