Open >heart surgery of course! He's got to stay true to himself... :-) First of all, I'd like to apologize for my incoherent phrasing in the above quote ("If a band..."). *I* don't even think it makes sense stated that way. But, to address the analogy (and I really don't think it's a particularly *good* analogy) - the statement you make is truer than you realize. If a doctor loves performing heart surgery (or dealing with the heart in general), then after his general internist training, he will train to become a cardiologist. And cardiologists do *not* perform carpal tunnel surgery - orthopedic surgeons do. The doctor would simply refer the patient to a more qualified physician. (I work in the MIS department of a health clinic. Go ahead, try me. :)) The point I was trying to make was that when a group of musicians get together, then whatever creation flows naturally from the integration of those individuals is going to be the best possible music they can create, no matter what kind of music it ends up being. As soon as they allow that creation to be affected by outside (non-musical) influences, the result is something that is less than the best. It may still be great music, but not the *best* music they can create. _____Pat Sullivan_____________________________________ E-Mail: email_address_removed WWW: http://www.ici.net/cust_pages/psull/psull.html IRC: DDictator ICQ: 2049374 ______________________________________________________ It's not hard to meet expenses, they're everywhere. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 19:20:47 EST From: WazooDust To: email_address_removed Subject: KM back in DT ?? "Trilogy" is also a very good album. These are considered by many to be the best ELP albums. There's also a station that comes in around 106.9 / 107 ish in Connecticut and area, and I still had it, though fuzzy, into northern NY state. Fair enough. Mike, I AM an asshole when I feel that I need to be, and I am willing to accept that. And regardless, (this is paradoxical) I really have no problem with you, at all... it's your cd business that's problematic. Whether you re-invest the money or not, it's still money that you're making off someone else, illegally. This will not be a legitimate business, and worthy of anyone's appreciation until either the band is getting their share of the profits, or the band hands you a condom and bends over. I remember discussing this before (quite a while ago) and explaining to you that when this stuff comes up, chances are I WILL comment. >You just make assumptions and blow them all over the Jam. I made no assumption. I stated what appears to be fact, based on what you stated. > There HAS BEEN a price cut. ALREADY. And you're making a fortune, and can afford another price cut. Do the math... this must be quite a comfortable living. I know I've had jobs where $400 was two weeks pay. I'm not out of line for what I've said. You can stop the charade that you're doing the cds as a service to the ytsejam. You're doing this as your business. You said it yourself... you make a living off DT's music. That eliminates the original intent of your cd burning, as we were introduced to it (simply to make things available to the fans). > I would appreciate you checking out the FACTS next time before > posting what amounts to a huge public insult to me on the Jam. Just point out what is not factual or against "facts" in what I posted. > Unlike most businesspeople, I have thin skin and no life, and therefore > Prism Records *IS* my life and anything about Prism is most definitely > *personal*. I think the people who buy my creations would expect nothing > less than that level of commitment. That's part of the problem... they're buying DT's creations, not your own. I have a problem with boots being sold for above manufacturing costs (and since this problem has come to my attention, I have not purchased a bootleg cd). That's my own problem. But when you're making a killing on the bootlegs, then I become at least somewhat outraged, and you're going to deal with it, when you make this shit public. I just wish you'd quit this charade of "I'm doing everyone a favor" and show the fact that this is nothing more than a business, no more caring or friendly, no more concerned with the bands wishes or intents, and no more concerned with who is getting fucked, than any other business. As far as I'm concerned, Mike Bahr has been a pretty cool guy. Prism Records (and the businessman Bahr) is another story altogether. If you find this distasteful, that's fine... but if you can't take criticism, then you're going to be the one who's crying. Don't make this any more personal than it has to be. Seriously (who, me?), I think this is an interesting thread. The best DT clone I've heard thus far is Hydrotoxin from Germany. I've read that Arkhe sounds virtually identical, complete with a LaBrie-soundalike vocalist (I don't know how much pot he smokes). I haven't obtained Arkhe yet, but Hydrotoxin is a definitely kick-ass prog metal outfit. The guitarist is excellent and sounds like a Vai/Satriani/Petrucci hybrid. The vocals are generally very good but a bit hard to swallow when the singer tries to imitate that growly 6:00 scratch; it just doesn't work. Other than that, it's great, especially the first two tracks. All this discussion about pot has given me the munchies...time to go raid the fridge.
