That's just the >way it works, dude. survey says--nope. sorry, have to call you on this one. anyone who equates the term "selling out" to dollars and cents is taking the term far too literally. when one is said to have "sold out," what is being referred to is the selling of integrity, of pride. that simple. for those who believe metallica sold out, they believe that metallica went entirely against everything they had previously stood for, in terms of never compromising with their music, or with its presentation. a result was greater record sales, true, but that's only secondary. in the rap community, mc hammer's sales plummeted several years back when he was widely accused of "selling out." the sales are irrelevant--he sold out in that he betrayed things he claimed to stand for (with the black community). ok, about boots. now, as chris is getting slammed for critiquing mike bahr's business practices (something i have no familiarity with, so no comment on), i am reminded of a few jams ago, about "When Dream And James Unite." someone had said that it wasn't too cool, taking mike bahr's boot and just making a copy of it. i wonder: why? isn't it exactly what botlegging is, taking another person's work and selling it to make a profit? i don't want to start a holy war about bootlegging here, and i don't really have any passion for or against it... just wondering.... --MATt ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 16:13:30 -0500 From: "Heavy Metal at The Mining Company" To: Subject: Re: flotsam and jetsam Message-ID: <001b01bd1f9e$ef2f7300$61c229cf@default> It's 1998, and Flotsam has long since left MCA and returned to Metal Blade. If you want to hear what they sound like minus a meddling label, check out their latest release (1997), High. Killer classic Metal album, and more in the mold of their older stuff than the last couple on MCA. Not progressive in the least, but if you like Heavy Metal by definition, it's definitely one you'll wan to give a listen. The keyboardist uses a lot of the same sounds as Kev Moore. Great guitar. Vocals are different, at times, they remind me of John Arch from early Fates. Lyrics aren't the best, aren't the worst, but the vocal melodies make up for it. On the other hand, I wouldn't recommend Superior. Reminds me a lot of Crimson Glory, if you remember them. This is more like standard metal if you ask me, even though there's keyboards/piano. One piano song sounds really good, but reminds me too much of a Wakeman song from ABWH. I love the reactions of people upon their first introduction to the jazz world. Don't get me wrong, Finneus Gauge is not jazz, but the harmonic content and style of the soloists and comping (especially guitar) is very jazz and fusiony. This music is DENSE. The harmonies are there, but apparently they're just flying over people's heads who aren't familiar with this dense material. Keep listening to it, I think it will grow on you once your ears get used to what's going on. The guitar player is incredible in a fusion sense, and sometimes he even rocks it out. Very Holdsworthy. Anyway, anybody who DOES like fusion and is into this style should give it a chance. I'd record my performance and listen back to it later to see if there really is an improvement) and as for selling out...I just hate that term, especially how its used in this list. Its like one of those trendy business terms like 'paradigm'. Everybody seems to have have there own little definition of what 'selling out' means , and the minute a band crosses the line they point fingers and scream 'SELL OUT!'. In reality, the minute you sign a record contract, you have sold out. You are officially letting a company *pay* you so *they* can own *your music*. And in the end, they decide what you release. Granted, depending on what kind of music you play, the company itself, and how you negotiate, the label can go from not giving a shit of what you do, all the way to hovering over every single note you play. I'd like to meet an artist on a major label who has never compromised any of his/her music because of label pressure. If you dont want to sell out, then make cd's by yourself and sell them from your home. (which today is possible with cd'rs and the net) Ern ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 17:38:39 -0500 From: email_address_removed (Kevin Surely) To: email_address_removed Subject: replies Message-ID: Hi Pat, You wrote something that looked like this: >>If a band is recording material specifically for anyone other than >>themselves first and foremost is wrong. Well, I don't know about the 1971 album nor about their box set, but since I'm trying to get into ELP, I've rented their album "In the Hot Seat" and it features this track (the album is from 1994) and it is split in many CD tracks, and the song is encoded in Dolby Surround. The Trinity Pro is the same as the Plus only it has 76 keys instead of 61. and the Trinity ProX is an 88 key controller, with piano action in the weighted keys. the sounds are the same as the Plus and the Pro. there are also a bunch of add-ons that can be purchased that will allow you to do direct to disk recording within the synth itself. you can also get memory expansions, and the other typical garbage. the most interesting of these is the optical output option that would allow direct recording into something like an ADAT or minidisk system. all that information is on the korg web site at Lary ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Nov 1997 17:26:16 -0500 From: email_address_removed.br (Rogerio Brito) To: email_address_removed Subject: FortuneFameMirrorVainGoneInsaneTheMemoryRemains (fwd) Message-ID: Well, I thought this one was funny... :-) []s, Roger... -------- Forwarded message -------- Newsgroups: alt.rock-n-roll.metal.metallica Date: 18 Dec 1997 11:50:27 GMT ]From: email_address_removed (CANDLEMAS6) Subject: FortuneFameMirrorVainGoneInsaneTheMemoryRemains Fortune Fame...Metallica has acheived fortune and fame.
