Okay...heh heh...a few months ago we had this discussion, and there was much flame-age. =) Let's just put it like this: if someone is speaking like an 8 y/o suburban kid, you'll be able to understand them no matter what your grasp of English is. If they're speaking the way a college professor would when at an academic conference of some sort, you'd have difficulty understanding them if you were the 8 y/o kid. The analogy isn't perfect of course--I got into the band before I knew diddly-shit about music--but IMHO when they pull out some of the technically difficult stuff, if you're not prepared for it you can get lost very very quickly. Green Jello was hilarious. Kinda reminds of me of what Phish would be like if they didn't have any talent and didn't have the jazz influence. What the hell happened to them anyway? That video was funny as hell. =) > Hey, I'm a musician! > > I play CDs very well. LMFAO!! Good one Rogerio! >> I think Phish did a song about DT's latest album many years >> ago...anyone >You Enjoy Myself? Fast Enough For You? Is this supposed to be easy >to figure out?!! I was wondering about that myself actually...heh heh. "You Enjoy Myself" is probably the most prog-like song they've ever done...at least, that I know of...*lol* Phish supposedly has over 700 songs in their repetoire... ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Jan 1998 18:48:15 EST From: Devs0432 To: email_address_removed Subject: European MTV Message-ID: << Hi folks! Just to clarify, I agree with the posters who have indicated that a low "growly" sound doesn't fit James voice. I think that his voice is good because of it's clarity, and I prefer to hear him singing "cleanly", whether it's high or low. I was thinking more of his "lower" singing as on SDV. I don't think that a move towards an old James Hetfield style would help with commercial success/sales. - BH ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Jan 1998 10:51:33 +1030 From: "Woolcock" To: "YtseJam Mailing List" Subject: 6:00 MIDI file Message-ID: Hey 'jammers (particularly Mark Bredius), my 6:00 MIDI File should be available on Under A Cyber Moon now or at least pretty soon. As for YNM, I like the song in the fact that it has quite a catchy tune, but as with most songs on FII (not including LiTS and ToT), it is too repetitive, with not enough time signature changes (IMO). BTW, I worked out what IMO meant about 5 seconds after I posted my last message. :) And Eric Paul LaRue, get rid of your damned signature!!!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Shane Woolcock - email_address_removed.au WWW - http://rampage.ml.org/sector1/~samah/ "Lifting shadows off a Dream once broken She can turn a drop of water into an ocean" - DT ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Jan 1998 19:35:07 -0800 From: Brian To: email_address_removed Subject: Realaudio broadcast? Well, I can confirm the existence of this 2 cd set. It was basically put out by the same people responsible for the demo series (Majesty Demos CD, Instrumental 1, 2, and 3, No Sleep Since Brooklyn, Rising Power), etc.... It is a 2 CD SET which is as folows: DISC 1: (all tracks live with james) (basically a boot of mr. Bahr's When dream and today unite) 1. A Fortune in Lies 2. Status Seeker 3. Ytsejam 4. The Killing Hand 5. Light Fuse and Get Away 6. Afterlife 7. The Ones who Help to Set the Sun 8. Only a Matter of Time 9. To Live Forever *HERE IS THE COOL PART* *DISC 2:* TRACKS 1-4 RECORDED IN THE STUDIO WHILE REHEARSING FOR A SHOW WITH IRON MAIDEN... 1. Pull Me Under 2. Metropolis Part 1 3. A Fortune in Lies 4. Learning to Live 5. Caught In a Web TRACKS 5-6 LIVE ON BRUCE DICKINSON BBS RADIO SHOW 1-29-95 6. Lifting Shadows off a Dream 7. 6:00 TRACK 8 LIVE WITH BRUCE DICKINSON ON LEAD VOCALS 8. Perfect Strangers Anyways, I've known about and had this boot for about a month now, but I am not a believer in booting someone else's bootleg..especially song for song..to me that's unoriginal... Anyways I digress.... The 2nd CD is definately cool...and the in studio rehearsal stuff is great.... If anyone is interested in getting this 2 CD set, I have it for $41 + shipping... Before you ask, I am not making more than gas to get to the post office and ship it to you... For those of you who already have Mike's WDATU, I can make you a custom CD-R of the 2nd CD plus I can throw on some extras to fill out the remaining time: (Like the new demos, etc...) I should have color scans of this set up on my webpage at http://nw3.nai.net/~axe Anyways If anyone is interested in this stuff, please let me know via email Thanks.. Does that mean that Kenny G. is a sellout? And whose cheese are we talking about anyway? > Trying to benifit on the sound of another IMHO is selling out. You may disagree, but this is the way I see it. This part really confuses me. What do you mean by "benefit?" Are you referring to being "influenced" by someone? If so, than DT must be sellouts, as is every musician playing today because everybody is influencing everybody else. If you are referring to taking elements of a genre and incorporating it into your own stuff, I would call that "learning." But regardless of what you mean by "benifiting of the sound of another," you originally labeled Enuff Z'Nuff as sellouts because of their IMAGE (make-up, etc), not the music. So which is it? I once heard Chip Z'Nuff on Howard Stern and he said that the image > that the band "portrayed" hurt them in the long run. I feel that > "portraying" is a form of selling out. When an artist "portrays" they > stop being original. Let it be known, that I don't hate Enuff Z'Nuff, > but I don't like them either. There are a lot of bands out there that are 100 times worse (don't even get me started on Everclear). > No offense, but every band "portrays" an image to a certain extent, even those that just wear jeans and t-shirts. That's called reality. I guess every band is a sellout then (one could possibly make an argument for that, I guess). And if a band happens to have an original image (ie. KISS, though I'm sure someone here will disagree with me) are they selling out? Ack! This kind of attitude disgusts me. And you're absolutely right, she DOES represent the mainstream listener. The mainstream listener doesn't like a technical singer because he/she feels that the singer is not really emoting, but hiding behind a skill. > >Just a thought, but if DT wants more commercial success, maybe James > should use the lower end of his range more often... Well, the reason you don'y hear too many popular music acts with a low-voiced singer is that there is just something about the lower end of the human voice that doesn't lend itlef to amplification, and face it, pop singing is an amplified medium. That's why so many singers in bands have to scream beyond their comfortable range--to be heard. Since it has been happening so long that screamy vocal sound has become a part of the rock/metal idiom. Then there are the exception on one end, like Brad Roberts. He didn't have to deal with a wall of blaring Marshalls, though. Then there's Brad Delp . His voice is so naturally high that it's just no problem. James, of course, falls into the latter category! > with DT, though... boy, i don't know how i can say this without pissing > people off... labrie, when he moves away from the powerful higher > vibrato, doesn't strike me as all that powerful. in other words, when That's cause he's a TENOR! :) > KJLB sings in his masterful vibrato, like in Voices, LTL, Surrounded, > etc etc etc, it blows me away... but a lot of people find it whiney. i These are the people whom I'd like to give a good shoe in the ass.
