They played "Lie," and having seen a commerical for Awake, I decided to record it onto my video collection.(Also collected the videos for "Empire" and "I Am I" by QR as well as "Down In It" by Nine Inch Nails. :-) ) From that, I just thought they were another hard rock band. Later, after I had seriously gotten into QR, I was randomly looking through my mom's record club magazine, and saw both Awake and Change of Seasons. I only ordered Awake, though. When I got it and listened to it, by the time I got to "The Mirror," I thought, "Okay, I understand now. They're Queensryche on steroids!" With this in mind, the two most lovely DT ballads, LSoaD and SDV just blew me away.(Oh, wait, WFS is just a hair moreso. Sorry.) I was just casually going to add to my DT collection until at Phi Mu Alpha informal rush, one of the actives(who would later become my big brother) heard me mention Queensryche, asked if I had heard of Dream Theater, and we got into a discussion about them. I then decided to get Images and Words, which I loved! The rest, as they say, is history.(Although I'd love to tell it!) And now I'll be attending their alma mater! WOO-HOO!!! Complete with burning guitars, bashed up drum sets and sealed with a kiss, Eric Paul LaRue "Take hold of the flame. Don't you see life's a game? So take hold of the flame. You've got nothing to lose, but everything to gain!" Queensryche-"Take Hold of the Flame" http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Towers/6289 "That's it! Genie, MAKE ME A GOD!!!" Message-ID: My favorite DT moment was when I realized that I could give a shit about anyone's first DT experience, and knew for certain that testicular cancer is spreading like butter on the proverbial pancakes of Kevin Moore's "More Talented Than Derek" sack. In other news: Nothing. There has been almost nothing of value in major prog music in the last couple months, with the exception that DT is slaying whole planets at each of these most killer shows. Anyone who knows something about a hot new band (and DON'T SAY RHAPSODY, because they are NOT IT) pulleeze, enlighten me, for I am sinking into "a cacophony of doom filled sorrow!" (Buckethead) I need some fresh new music... still waiting on those slackers in Symphony X and Shadow Gallery (Come on, guys... do you need ME to finish those lackluster guitar performances, or stun you with my double bass drumming and virtuouso keyboard work? I also have a 12 octave vocal range that will break both glass and wind on command... let's get these fucking albums out already!)... For the shredders present, I'm almost done with the revamped Ron Thal site, at it's new location: http://www.prognosis.com/bumblefoot Most notably, I now have samples from all of Thal's full releases, including his new album "Hands" and his Sega Saturn soundtrack from the game "Wild Woody." Ron is no longer really "Prog" in the sense that he was on his first album, but those who are openminded, will probably really love his music... very humorous, and hard hitting. And yes, he can shred the ass end off a rampaging mammoth. When I was living on the Alabama/Florida line a friend and I made the drive to Montgomery so we could browse the stock and save shipping charges. It turned out that it is an operation run out of the spare room in her house! She was very friendly about it, though, and she let us hang out in her house for two hours. I bought Rush "Electric" on vinyl there for $16, among other things. It's a reputable operation, if you want to buy something from her. Re: DT changing their setlists and adding "variety." Pick a tour DT has done or is currently doing. Any tour. Now write out a list of all the things they played live that weren't/aren't found on any of their albums. (Yes this includes Nirvana's "Come As You Are!") I can't complain about hearing the same DT songs night after night if they also do a Deep Purple cover one night, a Hendrix cover another night, a Nirvana cover another night, a fast as all hell remix of "Ytsejam" every night, an extra solo in "Scarred" every night, etc. etc. etc. Keep in mind that (1) there are always songs in the DT repertoire that get switched around, i.e. from their current tour "Under A Glass Moon," and (2) many times DT will only cover a song a few times, then a few nights later you begin hearing other stuff. Ex: "Damage Inc." was fun while it lasted, but I don't think they'll ever play it live again. For a one-time-only performance, I think "Bombay Vindaloo" kicks huge big ass. And when was the last time LaBrie repeated "What is this, a fucking circus?!" Re: Recordings of past shows. Now that Falling has been released, I'd like to know if anyone recorded any of the shows over winter of 1996, and/or anything from the recent FII tour. If anyone has done this, let me know. E me plea. Re: Pat Griffin. Is this lunatic still alive? E-MAIL ME, PAT!! I've had your tapes done since the second night I got to MD...which would be November 3rd, 1997. :) Re: JLMB keys and geetar. The keyboard and guitar are not switching off during the solo. Both instruments play through the entire thing. It's not one track being panned back and forth, what is heard are actually separate tracks recorded individually in the left and right channels. The volume is what changes for each instrument. It's illusions, all illusions, just like that damned Copperfield. Lara could break out of that stupid underwater cage, and she wouldn't even need goofy-looking assistants... Re: "writing" and "lyrics." If a song says "Lyrics by Jack Ass" and "Music by The Entire Band" it doesn't mean "Jack Ass wrote the entire song because Jack Ass wrote the words." If there is anything to be learned from the "Making of FII" disc, it's that DT's music is a collaborative effort. (In particular I cannot stand listening to the "Hell's Kitchen" track. I got through it once, and it was agonizing!! :) ) One person may come in with the lyrics and a few melodies or chord progressions, but the sounds are from everyone. Re: The Dust Pan Ghost. New Jammer here. I'm curious to hear how / if everyone was >> affected the first time you ever heard Dream Theater... Do you remember the >> moment? It's a long story but most of the veteran jammers know it so I'll keep it quick. It was at the Newport in Columbus OH, Halloween 1994. I had a huge burn on my knee so I started drinking a lot of beer before the band even came on, so I could "numb" the pain. They opened with "Pull Me Under" and I thought "wow, they're using a sample??" because it sounded so perfect, but it was really them playing. I was in awe within the first 30 seconds of the show, and by the second song all the kinks were worked out and they were cooking. I couldnt believe they were playing the stuff note for note with no mistakes, I had to see it live to believe it. They were amazing to say the least. OK, now its the 4th song and my bladder is about to explode from the beer. I have to piss so bad it hurts, and wouldnt ya know it, there is a line to the restroom. I needed to find a place to tend to my blistering knee and relieve my aching bladder. I notice a door next to the bar leading into a small ally. No one is out there, so I slip outside and start to wiz behind a dumpster. The Newport security guards arrive at my location during "mid-stream". Im standing there with my pecker in my hand and 3 guards are out to make an example of me. I begged them to let me stay, said I just couldnt hold it any longer, and offered them money to let me back in. No luck. They were assholes popping steroids AND bored...bad combination. They threw me and my girlfriend out, all the while putting on this act like I was a real trouble maker...pushing me, swearing and yelling, all the way out the door. You woulda thought I showed up with a gun and attacked someone by the way they treated me. The moral? DT is a true wonder to see live, but don't piss during the show or you may miss the rest of it like me :( buster http://users1.ee.net/buster/ http://www.dhpc.com/ryche/ ------------------------------ Date: 9 Jan 98 10:09:04 +0200 From: "Ollila Marko" To: "email_address_removed" Subject: NDTC, Stratovarius Message-ID: Greetings ye 'jamanoids....
