I really love both of them, depending on what I'm in the mood for, but I have to say this: why do things the hard way if you don't have to? I mean, it would be kind of cheesy for the other four members of the band to go up there and play to a tape of the keyboard, but as long as the guy is actually playing, who cares if he takes advantage of the tools available? I'd take that as a sign of a *good* player, not a poor one - somebody who can take full advantage of what's available. -Brian ******************************************************************************** "The way your heart beats makes all the difference in learning to live... Actually, I think the reason for this is because the fan club is located in England and there are people all over the world in the club, probably a lot in the US, I would expect, and it would cost a FORTUNE to send all those CDs overseas with jewel cases. New Jammer here. I'm curious to hear how / if everyone was affected the first time you ever heard Dream Theater... Do you remember the moment? Me, I moved to Houston from some podunk town in OK, hadn't heard anything progressive except for Yes and Rush. However, I've had six years of music class, and four years of drumming on a beat-up Whitehall set. I sucked, but I knew enough to appreciate the people with real talent. One day a friend of mine put Awake in the player as I was driving us to lunch. "Erotomania" started up. Holy shit. That was an adrenalin surge. I think I was shaking when we got out of the car. That night I went to a big record store and bought I&W and Awake. Now I'm addicted. What an intro into Prog rock... ------------ Eric Heisserer APQC email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Jan 1998 16:46:39 -0600 From: Eric Heisserer To: email_address_removed Subject: Imagining DT in the Studio... Message-ID: There are points in many DT songs that attract my attention so much I end up imagining what these guys were saying/doing in the studio. Now is that bizzare fan-addiction or what? Fer instance: the KM/JP solo "duets" in the middle of Met.Pt 1 or even near the end of LtL, I can see them having so much fun matching each other note-for-note, giving each other those looks like-- "I'm keeping up with ya!" "Oh yeah, well how 'bout some of *this* action?" "I gotta wah-bar, baby--it's called a pitch wheel!" "Try this on for size!" Or off FII, that neat part in HK when Derek starts on keys, then JP says, "Hey, whatcha doin' over there, Derek? Let me try that..." Boom. Perfect unison. None of my friends catch that it's two instruments. And then Myung says, "Hi guys, what's goin--oh, I can do that." Boom. They're all at it. Kick ass. Of course, the feeling probably wears off for them, they play so much it comes naturally, but that's what I see when I hear those coordinated moments... ------------ Eric Heisserer APQC email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Jan 1998 17:44:12 -0400 From: "Charlie Korch" To: email_address_removed Subject: Commercial Message-ID: >>Doesn't selling out mean going mainstream and selling lots of CD's and becoming unbelievably popular, lots of radio play, MTv, etc....<< No. That is selling out and getting lucky! I believe selling out is the act of TRYING to crate something just in hopes of making it or making it bigger. You can be a poor sell out. Look at Kix, Faster Pussycat, and Enuf-Z-Nuff. I am tired of people stating that a band must make lots of money in order to be commercial. Does that mean that when Michael Jackson writes a song, it isn't commercial until it makes a million dollars. If Michael Jackson never sold an album, his material would still be commercial. You have a valid point, but in my case, I thought that You Not Me was a very weak song BEFORE I EVER LOOKED AT THE LINER NOTES and realized that it was written with outside "help". I agree that bringing someone in from outside to co-write a song is not NECESSARILY a bad thing; some bands have written some very cool songs this way. However, after listening to "You OR Me" and "You NOT Me" back to back, it's pretty clear (in my opinion) that in this case the outside help WAS a mistake. > Please get over it........ Hey, in four full-length albums (five if you count the Majesty demos) and one EP, Dream Theater has only released 3 or 4 songs that I'm not totally crazy about. That's a far better track record than most bands who's CDs I own, which is a big part of the reason why Dream Theater is easily one of my all-time favorite bands. So when I say that I don't like You Not Me, please take that statement in the proper context.
