Always a pleasure. :) I apologize for not hanging around after the show. Two of the people I rode down with were DATing the show, and are understandably leery of hanging around while they're still wired. Since they wanted to boogie right after the show, I had no choice but to oblige. Next time, I'll have a new car and I'll be able to drive *myself*, dammit. There's also the emotion you get when there's someone at your side that doesn't know of your favorite band and you're at his/her side to tell them something about the band that's playing at the moment. Track Listing: 1. Hollow Years (Radio Edit) 2. Hollow Years (LP Version) 3. You or Me (pre-Desmond Child version of You Not Me) 4. The Way It Used to Be (non-LP demo) The Way It Used to Be is not terribly flashy (no blazing instrumental parts except for a pretty cool guitar thing at the end), but it's a very good song. The lyrics are by James LaBrie, and it clocks in at a little under 8 minutes. Definitely a song that I'm glad to have on CD. You or Me is great! It is at least 100 times better than You NOT Me. This recording confirms all of my suspicions about Desmond Child's doctoring of the song. Before, I thought that _MAYBE_ Desmond hadn't really changed too much, and that maybe it was just a weak song to begin with. But no! Every single thing that I don't like about You NOT Me was Desmond Child's doing (assuming that any changes between this recording of You OR Me and the final You NOT Me are completely his fault). I'll spare you a detailed analysis of the song, and just say this: You OR Me sounds like a single, coherent Dream Theater song, which flows smoothly from beginning to end. It's not their best work, but not near their worst. You NOT Me (in my opinion) sounds like it was loosely patched together from pieces of a really bad Dream Theater song (if such a thing exists) and pieces of a really bad Aerosmith song. If you are interested in getting the Hollow Years CD single, Music Boulevard (http://www.musicblvd.com) has it for $9.89 plus tax and shipping. And they are running a special now on shipping -- only $1 per order in the United States (They also ship outside the U.S., but I'm not sure what the rates are). Much better than I could anyways. My friends, I've had the distinctive pleasure of seeing DT 5 times besides this on the FII tour, as well as a number of times in the past. This show was the epitome of them all, bar none. As always, it was an absolute pleasure seeing all the jammers, those whom I've seen before and whose names I remember (D-Man, Syrinx, Wild Koba, and Rachael), and those whom I just plain forgot. Sorry to those few. While some may frown on the fact that I ate some mushrooms prior to the show, this experience was truly magical. Highlights for me were as follows: 1. Letting it be known, both aloud and to Syrinx, that the rhythm guitarist of Big Wreck looks to me like Alex Lifeson circa Moving Pictures. When I said it aloud initially it got a good laugh, especially from some Jammers; my attempt to become a comedian has been furthered. Thanks guys :) 2. Liquid Tension-- prior to Big Wreck's performance, this was played. Boys and girls, the music is sickening. Guaranteed to be illegal in some selected states :) 3. Trail of Tears 4. Voodoo Chile Jam-- JP. Nuff said. 5. Demos-- boy oh boy, Raise the Knife and Where Are You Now are so overwhelmingly good. 6. Trail of Tears 7. Take Away My Pain-- I happen to favor the mix of the older and newer versions of the song than what's on the album. Such emotion 8. Trial of Tears 9. Seatbelt portion of Ytsejam-- good thing there are such things as airbags to ameliorate the impact :) 9. Did I mention Trail of Tears??-- I was brought into one of the most tizzying frenzies of my life during this piece, and notably the climax at the end of Derek's instrumental. A moment I'll never forget. I can now die with a contented heart. 10. The "Rock N Roll" interlude during Metropolis-- very well done by Not-Cornell 11. And the moral of it all-- vegetables for everyone remain on the floor after the show from the earlier attack of Big Wreck by Portnoy and friends. Cheers to all for a happy and prosperous new year. This certainly gets things off to a wonderful start. DP ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Jan 1998 23:41:54 -0500 From: "Brian P. Kelley" To: email_address_removed Subject: Jaxx trip - A Mission From Prog Message-ID: 6:00 on a Saturday morning, Atlanta: Cashman, his friend Chris, and your roaming reporter here leave the ugly city limits of The Big Peach to a destination of "dreamy" proportions: Springfield, VA. Only an overturned rig, a blizzard, or a could get in our way! We were on A MISSION FROM PROG. With a fresh YtseJam sticker on the back window, we were packed up and heading to Jaxxville! :) A couple pre-show travelling notes: * As Paul had stated during the trip, Greenville, SC must receive the most insufficient funding from the DOT of any city in the nation. I swear they've been working on this 3-mile stretch for over 20 years. * What's the deal with the excess of wacky personalized license plates in VA? One of my favorite ones was a long white sedan reading "NANNIES" (driven by -- you guessed it -- Katherine Hepburn and Jessica Tandy). Well that's who they looked like! :) They had a little "pep in their step" as they dared to drag with us. But this Honda wasn't about to surrender to NANNIES!!!! * Traffic along I-95 around and north of Richmond is THE WORST!!!! You would swear that there was some six car pile-up or something ahead. Plus, this being the end of the New Years' holiday, everybody was cruisin' back home. Either that or it was gonna be one hell of a Ytse-gathering! ;) Found an Econo Lodge several exits before Exit 169B Springfield, unloaded some stuff, and headed to Jaxx. Had no problem with the directions, even though the pizzeria was unfairly dwarfing the concert venue. Apparently there was no outside marquee to tell you it was Jaxx. Met several cool people while waiting in line for doors to open. Around this time it was about 6:15 PM and though driving what seemed forever, this Atlanta crew was wound up and ready!!! Met the "Great Bafu" up there but didn't run into Pat D. Plenty of people from VA, MD, PA, and NY though! Even met this guy from Huntsville, Alabama who e-mailed me before the trip. Small world, huh? Once inside the concert area, you couldn't help to notice that this show was gonna crank out some serious decibels!!! This place must be 1/3 of the size of Masquerade, but the sound would be 3 times as awesome too! It seemed like an eternity waiting for Big Wreck to come on. I must admit that I was saying, "Well let's get them on and get them the hell out!" But during their set, I was just astounded. The guitarist/lead singer was twice as good than in Atlanta as well as the sound. Everything just seemed to click and this audience seemed more appreciate of their playing. They really, REALLY impressed me this time!! The bassist did his slapping thing during one part and the guitarist had just a blistering solo. I was jamming hard to them and actually wanted them to play one more song, but they had to make way for 'da boys! That's alright, though! I'm sure we'll be hearing more of this band sometime soon -- still, I can't shake that Chris Cornell resemblance! :o The Liquid Tension Experiment material before BW was just awesome. Heard it in Atlanta of course, but this time was able to hear it more clearly. Before DT, it was the same deal: RTK, TWIUTB (I really love this song!), Rooster, and Clockwork and then.... duh! duhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!! Derek walks out with his irresistable Rocky Horror pose and OFF WE ARE! (Btw, DS is really a cool guy! He's not as weird as people think :) Personally, I thought it was a better crowd here than at Masquerade (mainly less young kids -- durn whippersnappers ;). The boys just rocked the place down and the set was somewhat the same (yet twice as awesome) with a few exceptions: The Silent Man You Not Me (thought it was first time played, but done previously) Lie Metropolis Encore w/Nirvana's Come As You Are, sung by MP of course :) Didn't do Scarred and dropped a couple sections from ACOS (added Carpe Diem, I think!) Man, I couldn't believe they did Lie (I was going APESHIT!!!) and YNM as well. Silent Man was a pleasant surprise too! It was cool to hear an electric version finally! LaBrie was just on fire again and MP seemed twice as intense and brutal on his kit! Shit, that dude can pound some serious skins! Petrucci seemed a little more receptive to the crowd yet still had that trademark stare down pat. He must have fun doing that! I couldn't see Myung well from where I was, but he sounded fat and beefy coming off those MesaBoogie amps! Other highlights included a hand behind the drum riser moving the mic away from MP's face periodically, LaBrie rolling his eyes during the "Kurt Cobain" verse in JLMB (I thought that was funny!), MP throwing a stray towel right on Derek's head. Outside the venue afterward, everybody except for JM and JP came out -- sorta bummer! :( There was not adequate lighting outside and there was all this spilled diesel fuel or something around their bus. We were behind the Mobil gas station so go figure! Fans could've slipped out there if it wasn't for a piece of shag carpet (from Derek perhaps?) layed down several feet from the bus. Good thing though, the Mobil was still open when we all got out -- needed some H2O and replenish my Vitamin C level. All they were selling inside was beer (no water) and I wasn't about to move from my spot. The security (or "yellowshirts" as I called them) warned us that we were now "trespassing" once the guys had retired to the bus. Looks like JM or JP still weren't gonna come out! Afterwards we had a late-night breakfeast at a nearby Denny's. Met Tory Lynn, who runs the Queensryche IRC chat room and a few of her friends. Paul probably remembers the name of that tall red-haired dude who had the "Lost In The Sky" and other CDs, for I can't off-hand. Service was actually very quick, though the sausage was a tad undercooked. No matter, Chris had fun impersonating Mr. Hanky the Christmas Poo with one of those raw links. We ate, laughed, and squaked about practically every known music band in the world (or so it seemed!) All in all, a really fun time and truly wonderful people. Hope all of them had safe trips back to their respective homes. And hope to see them again "another day". On our way home Sunday, we vowed to stop at (you guessed it!) Southpark Boulevard just outside Richmond. Saw it on the way up but had to make time. Couldn't resist, we had to take some snapshots of the highway sign and the entrance to Southpark mall. And as Paul said, yes that must be the most screwy turn-off ramps I've ever come across. The ultimate Southpark highlight was seeing a young kid in Burger King wearing an "Oh My God! They killed Kenny!" shirt. Thought I saw Chef somewhere in the back making Whoppers but... NAAAH!!! it couldn't have been! ;) One other thing: We knew we were heading in the right direction once we came across the James River. And high praises to Cashman for bringing some killer prog CDs -- finally got to hear Fates APSOG, Enchant, Superior -- sound awesome, Angra, etc. Also had the Hollow Years single, just awesome!!! The only problem is now I need to BUY all these and I'm virtually broke!! :O Oh well, it was worth the trip. Look forward to the next one! Cheers to DT for superb playing and all their fan support. Keep up the great work, guys!!! :) Take the time, Brian If Belushi and Akroyd were DT fans, living in Atlanta naturally: DA: "It's 620 miles to Springfield! My first DT concert was the second EL N GEE show on the Home for the Holidays tour (the one not mentioned on the t shirt) and my second show was the Fix for 96 show at Toad's a year later. Well they only played two songs, PMU and Lie, at both shows. (They played Caught in a Web at one show and Caught in Alice's Nine Inch Tool Garden at the other.) I was really impressed that they had utilized such different set lists. Now I have seen DT 3 times on the Touring into Infinity tour (New Haven, Boston, and Hartford) and I have loved every show, yet I have been a little upset at the lack of surprises in the set list. Juggle around the order some more, throw in different old songs, play different songs from FII, such as ToT, or even AL. I don't want to sound like I am complaining; all of the shows have been great, however I'd like to hear different songs. Many of us in the crowd had seen the other shows as well so I am sure that variety would have been appreciated by others as well. This is just my humble opinion.
