It happens *every single year* . . . I go to buy some Christmas presents, and I just end up buying a load of CDs for myself instead. Hmph. Anyway, in the Dream Theater section, I came across a Winter Rose double CD, the second disc being a German record company promo with tracks by Enchant, Symphony X, Vanden Plas, Tiles, Mindfeed and Eldritch. There's a sticker on the front of the jewel case proudly proclaiming "feat. James LaBrie, the voice of Dream Theater". Nice cheesy 80s hair photo on the back. :-) I also picked up Vanden Plas's "The God Thing", which also had a sticker on the front. This time the proclamation is that they're "On Tour With Dream Theater", with a list of tour dates from 30/11/97 Milan to 9/12/97 London. Cool. Lastly, I chose a random The Gathering CD, in the hope that it has that Anneke chick singing on it. Nightime Birds. Well, The way Dallas actually became a Dynasty was two-fold: 1) a 1-15 record (one win away from my dream 0-16, I HATE THE COWFAGS!) 2) Special thanks to the Minnesota Vikings for trading 12 draft picks over a five year period for Hershel Walker. Dallas may have had the #1 pick, but that's only one pick. And in reality how many #1 picks end up becoming stars, not many. It was the Gump-style trade set up my Minnesota management which gave Dallas all those great players. You look at when guys like Smith and Aikman joined the league and they all came in about the same time. The Atlanta Ytse-invasion went well! :) Good to meet all of you folk (I will not mention a single name because I would be bound to forget one, but I did meet and shake hands with most of you). We hung out for several hours before the show wondering where the band was. Roadies and underlings could be seen scurrying around the tourbus, grabbing equipment from the bus and unpacking it from additional U-Haul's and Ryder trucks. (Lotta stuff). We passed the time listening to more prog music from Curtis "Sticks" Toler's amazingly powerful stereo. I think we amused the club employees; a few times I could see them standing by the entrance and peering curiously towards the noise, trying to figure out what was going on. Around 4.30 or so, a taxi showed and a single person got out. I think now that it was John P., but at the time he was too far away and hurried into the club too quickly to find out. It looked like he wouldn't have wanted to be bothered anyway. An hour or so later, an taxivan showed up and the four other guys got out and moved into the bus. We found out where they'd been: they were all shopping. :) Lots of mall-type carrying bags. At this point Curtis shut off the music and we moved to the entrance to begin waiting in line (and hopefully meet the guys). John Myung came out first. Bass slung over his shoulder, he moved towards the entrance; when we waved and said hi, he came towards us and smiled. He signed almost everybody's stuff; I was the last one "in line," so to speak, and he moved off. True to form, he said perhaps three words, though he did smile a lot. Derek popped out awhile later. We didn't press him either, though we waved and said hi; he walked past after we directed him to the entrance, saying he'd be back in a bit. James came by shortly afterwards. He emerged from the bus, saw us, and promptly made a beeline for us. A very nice guy; anybody who says he's egotistical or a jerk needs their head examined. He, too, signed everything put in front of him and was very talkative and friendly. He went back to the bus after looking around a bit. Shortly afterwards, he met up with John M and Derek, and the three of them walked off someplace (we think, to eat). They returned in 45 min or so and went inside for soundcheck. Mike popped out of the bus not long after they got back, but he went straight to a different entrance and they let him in there. They started letting people in about 8 or so and there was a bit of confusion when they let us in and then pushed us back out again (apparently the sound people weren't done with Big Wreck yet). 8.30 or so, they finally let us in. We spent another 45 min or so waiting while a technician screwed around with Derek's Hammond-style organ; he took it apart and put it back together several times. At 9.15 Big Wreck took the stage. Big Wreck: An okay band. Not the choice I'd have picked for opening for DT, but the vocalist/lead guitarist is pretty talented. Unfortunately, he's also got a mouth that's going to lose him a lot of fans. The crowd wasn't overly friendly, true, but every wisecrack that came his way he turned around into a personal insult against the idiot who flung it. He also wanted to know "What happened to southern hospitality?" A pity; he's a pretty good guitarist and the bassist is pretty good as well. After another 45 min or so (during which the stage was cleaned up markedly), the lights went down and Derek came onstage and launched into "Lines in the Sand," shortly followed by the other bandmembers. What can I say? I have now seen DT play live from the front row. I can die a happy man. What an incredible show. The band was dead-on all night; John M's playing was tasteful and powerful; Mike was an animal on the drums, beating them into submission; John P was in-your-face all night (literally, often playing just inches from us in the front row); Derek pounded hell out of his keys, often looking like he was in a strip show or something :) ; and James was a whirling dervish all night, running from end to end on the stage, making hand gestures and holding out his mic for the crowd to sing along. An utterly incredible performance. High points for me: 1) The bits of ACOS they played (it's my fave DT song); 2) Scarred (it's my second fave song). John played the shred solo right in front of me; his fingers were a blur. 3) Under a Glass Moon (this song KICKS live); 4) James and Mike dedicating "Just Let Me Breathe" to local idiot Mitchell Foy. Hahahahahahahaha..... 5) Having the band members point directly at me (Mike, Derek) after brief solos, play their instrument "to" me (looking straight at me -- John P), or generally single me out during the show. I love front row... :) 6) The YtseJam/Mike's drum solo. He is an ANIMAL. Couldn't believe my eyes or my ears. 7) Encore -- Metropolis pt. 1. Amazing!!!! 8) High-fiving the guys after the show was over, screaming thank-yous at the top of my lungs. Mike handed one of his sticks to me, shooing away three other people who tried to grab it. What a rush! Low points (as if anything could be really "low" at a show this great) for me: 1) I wish they had played Take Away My Pain. I know that Under a Glass Moon gets exchanged for it usually, so I wouldn't trade; still... 2) Dropping the stick when I was bumped HARD in the midst of a crowd of people, and watching somebody else grab my stick and head out the door. Dammit. Oh well, Mike handed it to me personally, so I'm happy anyway. After the show, we hung out inside near the backstage area hoping the guys would come out. Derek and John M sneaked out the back entrance and went straight to the bus, but John P came out and signed for a while (looking very tired; I left him alone after just a few words of thanks), then headed to the bus, followed quickly by James and Mike. I talked to Mike for a while (a LONG while compared to most "famous" folk; he is about the most outgoing guy you can meet) and thanked him and the other guys for coming to Atlanta. Mike left and headed for the bus after awhile and we waited a bit longer till one of the roadies told us Derek and John M had already left. We went outside and waited by the tourbus, hoping John M or Derek would reappear. Neither was in sight, but the evergregarious Mike was busy talking to anyone within earshot. When he finally went back inside, we asked him to see if Derek or John might be available. He smiled, said he'd do what he could, and disappeared after another round of high-fives. Shortly after, the Silent Man reappeared and signed for awhile. He seemed a little embarrassed by all the attention, but stayed till everyone had had their stuff signed. He said that Derek was sleeping, so we regretfully took our leave at that point. Guys in DT: If you're reading this, THANK YOU for such a great show. To the Ytses I met: good to see you. You just go on thinking that Fates fans are just following the Progressive trend, and ignore the fact that people can like other bands because of their own free will. I personally liked Fates first. But regardless, I think that theory of yours is utter bullshit. Just because you may not enjoy Fates doesn't mean everyone mirrors your tastes. If someone buys their first Fates album because of a suggestion on this list, it's no different than someone buying Sean Malone's solo album, or Brian Wherry's demo... they do that on a suggestion. If they then say they LIKE it, chances are..... THEY DO. Just accept that. His appeal is that he's an amazing technical player on the Sax, but has a (then) unique sound and feel... a lot of soul, and a LOT of work to get where he was. Some of his songs are particularly noteworthy because of the incredibly difficult chord changes he solos over. Check out Giant Steps and Countdown... listen to them a few times until you understand the melody and structure.... there is SO MUCH to learn from that music! For those of you not too familiar with Jazz, jazz musicians generally follow the chord progression with their solos... soloing over each chord, as opposed to choosing a scale or mode and winging it on that alone (or worse, writing the rhythm around your mode, to make your solo sound better). Remember, if you buy Chasing Time, that's like a cross section of all of their styles, past to present. You may not like some of the songs, but if you do like some, you'll probably like the whole album the song originated on.
