For the longest time, everyone was tellin me how great Marillion was.

Hey, kiddies.  Big news first:  I'M DONE WITH FINALS!!!!!  *phew*  I lived.

OK, real news:  I will be updating the FAQ within the next couple of days.  
Mostly to include all the currently-known tour dates, but also to clear up any 
mistakes.  So, now is a good time to read over the FAQ (especially if you 
haven't in a while) and see if there's anything that might need fine-tuning.  
Let me know - I'm here to serve!

Next bit of news:  Tonight I will be html-izing the FII studio log.  Should be 
up soon (like a couple of hours).

Then, the next big project is an HTML chart of every setlist from every show 
Dream Theater/Majesty has played since 5/28/86 (no joke).  This will take a 
while, I warn you now.  Both of these latest projects (as well as the FAQ) 
will be linked from my DT page (http://www.cs.wm.edu/~cmerlo/dt.html), so 
check there if you want to see the cool shit.

So, I got the Hollow Years single today.  No surprises regarding the radio 
edit.  It's just short.  "You Not Me" still hasn't bitten me yet, but "You Or 
Me" is a good, solid tune.  It starts and ends with random radio flipping (ala 
SDV), which I suppose could be construed as a hint towards what the song's 
about.  The differences in the lyrics are subtle.  The first lines of "You Or 
Me" are "People 'round here are driving me crazy/Watching them run is making 
me lazy," which IMHO is a lot less awkward than the FII version.  The chorus 
is a lot less busy (there are less words), and it gets the chance to breathe a 
little more.  Oh, yeah, and Desmond, in his infinite wisdom, axed a really 
nice bridge.  I like this quite a bit.  It makes the car tape.

"The Way It Used To Be" is the way it ought to be.  Wow.  I can't remember 
which song Mike said was going to wind up being the next Don't Look Past Me/To 
Live Forever, but if this was it, I agree.  7:48 of pleasure.

Thelonius Monk and John Coltrane are two of the real trailblazers in terms of far out
jazz.  I dont know a whole lot about either, but I know that they are both famous for
very good reasons, similar to why Jimi is known for guitar...They are all legends.

Sorry I cant be a whole lot more helpful.  Superior is great, but Im just about ready
for the next album : )

Geez I am so upset now, I am going to listen to my Oasis albums
maybe that will cheer me up.

Yes there can be no doubt that I am an asshole for daring to speak my mind
and there is no guessing who gets the runners up prize.

I'm not terribly familiar with Monk's particular works, but I've 
heard some of his stuff and really dig it.  Same goes for Coltrane 
(though I'm a bit mroe familiar with Coltrane).  What I do know is 
that, if you dig some kick ass jazz, then this is some good stuff.  I 
would definitely say both guys are famous for good reasons :).

	I'm gonna keep this really brief since I can barely move, much less think
clearly... My first live DT experience more than lived up to my
expectations.  The band was tight, James was right on - it was excellent.  
	I also enjoyed meeting some of my fellow Ytsejammers in person finally.
Greets to Paul Cashman (of course), Mark Peters, Phil Carter, Vaiman, etc,
etc... I'm sure I forgot someone(s), but it was great meeting you all.  
	The only disappointment (however minor) of the night came when I asked
Portnoy about the new version of The Killing Hand w/ Carol of the Bells
entwined within.  I told him I really enjoyed it but he said they most
likely won't do it again, and that he was glad I caught it when they DID
play it.  I didn't have the heart to tell him I've only heard it on various
bootlegs.  :) It's by far my favorite re-arrangement of the older songs.
Owell, can't have everything.  
	The guys were all really nice after the show and signed autographs, but
all of them seemed pretty tired, and they've got the bus ride to Tampa
tonite which will be pretty hateful.  Sherinian didn't show afterwards and
was apparently asleep on the bus by the time the other band members had
untangled themselves from our clutches... :)  

	All in all, easily the best concert I've been to - and I've seem some
pretty damn impressive bands...  Thanks guys...

DT in Philly rocked so friggin hard I couldn't believe it could be even
better than when I saw them for the first time at the Tradewinds.  I have
officially converted my girlfriend into DT.  It took a lot of work, but if DT
had visited a little sooner the conversion would have been easier.  She said
that it was the best show she had ever seen.  I was walking up to the TLA and
i saw MP walking his dog with his wife, and asked him if they were going to
play scarred since they didn't play it at the Tradewinds.  He said that he
thought they played it, but it would be played definitely tonight.  I was
happyand felt pretty cool in front of my girlfriend.  While waiting in line
waiting for a good seat I walked across the street and got a cup of coffee,
and who's there??  Derek dressed like someone in the sex pistols.  I
attempted to have a brief conversation with him, but her didn't really look
like he wanted to be bothered so i left after telling him that he kicks ass
on the keyboards and he said thanks.  
KJB was phenomenal during this show.  He was really ripping the high notes,
and he actually sounded just as good if not better live on some of the stuff.
I loved the way they from innocence to ytsejam into a much longer drum solo
than before into NW. In the middle of Metropolis DS actually took the mic and
all of a sudden the band started jamming a very fast punk song.  DS looked
ridiculous with that yellow greenish feathery scarf around his neck.  They
sound system was SO much better at this show. Big Wreck even sounded much
better than before.  Any fears I ever had about James singing live were
erased.  What a set of pipes on that guy!  Sorry so long, but I had to get
that out of my system.

Hmm...I was apparently so excited about the DT show in Atlanta tonight
that I forgot about case sensitivity. Crap. Oh well, DT kicked all kinds
of ass tonight, and the above link now works properly.

I'm totally beat so this'll be a quick message -- more to follow
tomorrow along with others' observations.  Biggest deviation from the
"usual"?    

--James dedicated "JLMB" (after it was played) to our hapless reviewer
buddy Mitchell Foy!   :)  :)

Not only is it a deviation, but it's a Ytsejam deviation.  :)

This was another of those "hang out and meet the band" shows, where if
you waited around inside by the backstage area the band came out, and
no backstage pass was actually needed.  The crowd outside by the bus
was also pretty much satisfied, although Derek scampered out almost
immediately and later John M. told us he was asleep -- which I'd
doubt coming from a roadie, but not from John.

Liquid Tension Experiment played before Big Wreck was a true pleasure
to hear.  Big Wreck themselves were...okay.   Better stage patter than
in Chicago; I might actually buy that CD.  Great to hear the
unreleased tracks between the bands+Rooster+Clockwork Orange and then
Da Boyz.  The setlist, from the actual setlist:

Great to meet all the folks on the Atl. Ytse-gathering list -- albeit
many of them after the show; wish we could have had more time to chat.
I'm wondering where some of you went after the show, too (Eric Desobe?
Curtis Toler, thought you were crashing here.....)    

I'm worn out -- but happily I don't have jury duty in four hours; my group
wasn't called.  Whew! 



Aside to Mike P.:  thankyou thankyou thankyou, and enjoy the promo.

So I guess you'll say the same thing about Liquid Tension Experiment?
I for one still enjoy the B/L/S CD.  I'm still hearing parts in the drums   
(I'm a drummer) that I didn't hear before.  This was the first time I   
have ever heard Terry Bozzio playing (with the exception of Missing   
Person, but we won't go there), and I don't even know who the other guys   
are.  I know Levins is playing on LTE.  Maybe it's because I'm a drummer,   
I don't know.
