I didn't care, since she likes "Master of Puppets" (it's funny how she seems to dig "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and other heavy M* shit --- I guess it's called osmosis :-) ). But the really *strange* thing was when my father came and told me "Well, you're finally hearing to some music, huh? I like this CD, who is it?" The strange thing is that my father *never* cared for *any* type of music. Then I asked them why they liked the CD if it was rock'n'roll (of course, there's a *big* rip off of Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker suite", nevertheless, it is rock'n'roll) and they told me "Well this CD is different, nothing too noisy". The same thing seems to happen with my antipatic aunt that is a piano teacher (as I told here before). Unfortunately, I didn't have the chance to show her this CD, but I'd like to hear her impressions of it. That's fear of distorted guitars IMO also. Meaning, that they want to make music. They >have a singer. He wants to sing. He needs lyrics. They want the music to >sound cool. They, therefore, also want the lyrics to sound cool. So, many >people often end up writing lyrics that just sound cool but don't >necessarily make any sense (e.g. "Doo-wah-widdy, diddy-dum, diddy-doo"). sometimes, yes, lyrics are written simply to create an effect, without having much meaning. this was precisely the intention of jon anderson of YES when he penned the lyrics to CLOSE TO THE EDGE: "a seasoned witch will call you from the depths of your disgrace, and rearrange your liver to the solid mental grace..." etc. these lyrics preplexed the hell out of me, until i read somewhere that jon intended no specific meaning, only to paint a vivid mental picture. at last they made *some* sense. still, though, by and large, most bands do write lyrics with some substantial content aside from the imagery. in fact, considering specifically Dream Theater's lyrics, the only one who seemed very interested in the visual effect of words was kevin. while the johns, and mike too, i suppose, have all tried their hand at writing lyrics, and the johns have been cryptic in some of their descriptions (the killing hand, lifting shadows, etc.), there is no evidence, i would think, in any of dream theater's songs that would lead to the conclusion that they were just trying to sound cool without having an actual point, or something along those lines. specifically with lines in the sand, then, we have many lines that do utilize fairly clear images referring to biblical texts. Dream Theater also has certain history of being interested in matters related to religion, such as in afterlife and voices/silent man). on top of that, we have doug pinnick singing, who has very strong christian inclinations (along with the rest of king's x). given that, along with the overall thematic organization of the song and the clear specific line references within the song, i don't really see much reason to assert that maybe they were only matching cool-sounding lyrics to a cool-sounding song. i think, given the context and what we already know about this song, Dream Theater should get a little more credit than that. --MATt ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Dec 1997 20:16:53 +0000 (UTC) From: Bert Baldwin To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 3349 Message-ID: If you want a tape of the spring Euro tour, check out Ryan Whitaker's site for Seven Wonders (awesome), Spinning Years, and Caught in Amsterdam '97. All play electric, and all admit to spending most of their provate practice time on acoustic, and doing most of their writing on acoustic. I'm the same. It seems that if you write something that sounds good clean, you can arrange the parts to add a distorted guitar... but if you write things dirty, then you have a lot of cleaning to do. And you don't need an amp for an acoustic. --ProgRockBoy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Dec 1997 13:59:53 -0700 From: "Vincent G. After reading my comments about a local inept review of TSO, Eckie inquired: >Uh, if it's so lame...why is it selling out so fast? >~Eckie just thinks some ppl are afraid of distorted guitars Good question, m'man; in fact almost exactly what I wanted to know when I wrote them. Here, just for a laugh, is the note I sent them: =========== Hey INsite folk, As a Christmas fanatic myself, I read with some interest B. Love's reviews of the various new Christmas CD releases this year. I had to laugh out loud at his inept review of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's "Christmas Eve and Other Stories." While Mr. Love is certainly entitled to his (lopsided) views of this fantastic album, it might interest him to know a few things: 1) TSO's "Christmas Eve and Other Stories" is NOT, in fact, a new release this year -- it has been re-released this year because it sold out of stores everywhere last Christmas season. 2) "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24," a track from the album, received extensive airplay on radio stations across the nation last Christmas season, and is getting even more airplay this year. 3) Sales of TSO are brisk this year as well; talk to clerks in various record stores and most of them will tell you it's hard to keep on the shelves. The album is being advertised by TV spots for Target, Blockbuster Music, and Goody's. The group recently appeared on the Rosie O'Donnell show, one of the most popular talk show programs in the nation, to play live and show clips from the "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24" video. B. Love's comparisons of TSO to Night Ranger and John Tesh are only true insofar as all those artists/groups actually have real talent. Apparently Love is too shortsighted to appreciate it. TSO, however, far from trying to "cash in on Mannheim Steamroller's success," have created their own holiday classic with a blend of power, majesty and a message of peace and goodwill to all on Earth. Calling it "the worst Xmas album ever, hands down" is perhaps the funniest thing I've read in months. So thanks, B. Love, for that holiday giggle -- but to anybody else wanting to hear some _good_, albeit different, Christmas music -- give this disc a spin. ========= Happy holidays, all. Maybe next year, we can organise ourselves and meet up before the gig! Lets hope they don't play the Forum. I'd prefer The Astoria (5 minutes from the office) or Shepherd's Bush Empire (on my way home). In both cases, there's more pubs where we could meet up before the gig. Don't know what happened to Graham Borland. I went to buy a T-shirt at the end of the gig and next minute he'd vanished. Sound's like he had an eventful trip home :-)) Vanden Plas were great. I love the latest album and they seemed to concentrate on the material from that. Ties - the web-site is great and I agree that 'Rainmaker' is a great song!! (The Web Thing - Vanden Plas Internet Site: http://www.inf.fu-berlin.de/~goebel/vp/vp.html) DT were magnificent. To be honest I was disappointed by the Tilburg gigs in April. The new songs seemed unfinished (they were) and though they played efficiently, there was a lack of feeling. None of that, this time. Everything sounded just right. Powerful, played with real conviction and with a great balance of material. JP's guitar was just so heavy!!! Even Derek seemed to fit in - or perhaps, because he was stuck at the back with his lava lamps, I wasn't too aware of the faces he was pulling. Myung and the stick were great - NM grows on me all the time and made a great set closer. James's voice wasn't as perfect as in Tilburg but he was still in good shape considering the number of gigs they've played recently. Portnoy always delivers and his incitement to bombard Kerrapp with letters was spot on. Mustaine delivered a similar (though longer) speech on the same subject only a month or so ago. But its no use us just complaining about the state of the UK press - we have to do something - I suppose email is the easier alternative - and it saves a stamp. I did write down the setlist - I just need to find the paper i wrote it on. Another short jammer with a sore neck. But a UK jammer with World Cup tickets!!! Montpellier here I come! [shame England aren't playing there - but I'll get the chance to cheer on the Iranians against Germany. :-)) ] Charlie P.S. Duesterhoeft" To: YtseGods Subject: DT and the Future Message-ID: I was just thinking the way to work today about DT's future (you do things like this during an hour drive). Now, I'm almost sure that Mike has said that the direction the band is going in is the way THEY want to go. I kind of question this. Now I look at other 'good' bands and what they've done. They've not really progressed, but cycled towards comercialism. From Rush to Metallica to Queensryche and so on. A few bands/individuals that have side stepped this 'tradition' are Fates Warning (I totally applaud them for having the balls to do a 53 minute epic), Steve Vai, Joe Satriani abd for the most part Dream Theater. I know there are other less well known bands in the industry that are progressing, but I'm speaking in a larger scale. What I think bands like Dream Theater and the like should do is, forget what is going on in the 'commercial world', but do what you want and TRY to change what's being played on the radio/MTV and the like. Just think about it, Rap/Dance music did it, and all that stuff is mostly rip off/ machines and boring pencil thumping noise. Why doesn't DT try to step up and do what they stand for, instead of making their music 'more accessible'. I say BULL SHIT! Americans haven't gotten where they're by doing what others said or thought should be done. Americans had at one time progressed a head of everyone, until laziness and the easy way out of things stepped in, but that's besides the point. If you want something changed you have to at least introduce you're idea and not be afraid of critism. We all know that the state of the music industry is at one of it's all time lows and we need someone to step up and lead the music industry into the 21st century- I sure don't think The Spice Girls, Sugar Ray, Jerkameoffa and Prodigy are going to do it. How is it to be done? Great question, but fortunately we have some of the most intelligent, open minded, creative, free willed and progressive minds in the world right here. It might seem like a huge challenge and a mountain bigger than Everst to climb, but noone is saying it can't be done. I know there are alot of holes and open ended stuff I left here, but I thought it would be a great conversation piece. Something that we can unite and talked civilized about and not bash each other over. that's all and thanks for listening (reading) Bruce Duesterhoeft PS.
