Well, > I don't know if I'm alone in this viewpoint, but whenever I learn > to play a song, that song losses its mystery. I know I'm not Really? I find that really amusing, because when I learn a song, it GAINS a magical quality!!! I hear the parts played by the specific instrument on their own, analyse them, and just totally love the way they fit in together. In particular, I felt this with PMU. What a song!!! The acustic guitar part over "this world is spinning around me.." is so magical!!! I knew it was magical when I heard it, but playing it!!! OOOhhh...!!! now when I hear it I relive the moment that I first played it! and of course every other single note in PMU rules too!!! > try to preserve that magic. Probably the most noteable song that > fits that description is Led Zeppelin's "Achilles Last Stand". A > song that I still think is the most perfect rock song ever Hehe... I feel kinda honoured!!! :) But I still stand!!!! ;P > recorded. If I were to transcribe it, it would somehow lose its > mystery. I couldn't listen to it in awe anymore. I would only > listen to it in an almost analytical frame of mind. "Oh, Jimmys > just playing off an E, and Jonesy just dropped that beat." Yeah, but you shouldn't JUST listen to it in that frame of mind. The more I learn about music, the more I am amused by the way all the theory produces such wonderful sounds. The more I learn how to play the guitar, the more I am amazed at drummers, bassists, keyboardists, violinists, etc. (Oh, I sing too, so no flames from singers for not mentioning vox!!) I just feel the music is a lot closer to me that way!!! 8D > Music should be more than just notes. It's the feeling, not > fitting it on a treble clef. It's the "clima". The emotions > evoked. That is what makes music special to me. And it should!!! It IS more than just notes. But it ALSO IS notes!!! so don't let the notes scare ya! ;P Achilles : . I just hope people take this in jest and don't get all pissy. So with no further ado, I start the; Progmetal Cliche List 1. CD covers with a cross, usually Celtic, broken, buried, or otherwise defaced. 2. Band photos with members wearing pirate or puffy shirts. 3. Lyrics about house parts i.e. doors, windows, mirrors, etc 4. Song titles or lyrics including the word "Babylon". Also anything else ending in "on". (Carry on, Hold on, etc.) 5. CD catalogs comparing everything to DT or QR. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Feel free to add to it, and play nice! Message-ID: I was in a CD place and I saw something interesting. They had a copy of WDADU, which was different than the 2 other copies I had. For one, the record company was One-Way Records, which I had never heard of. The back cover had the pictures of the band that's inside on the other ones I have. Plus, it had the following message (paraphrased): Please note that this CD was developed from an analog tape, and may contain hissing. Anyone have this CD, or know what the deal is with this thing? -Al -- ^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@ I inhale the sun...........I exhale the absence of light I am the number One..........burning. ^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^ email: email_address_removed email_address_removed HOMEPAGE:http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Towers/9280/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Dec 1997 07:39:42 -0800 (PST) From: Stephen Dedalus To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: Learning Songs Message-ID: I have to say I disagree completely with what's been said. I love learning songs and solows exactly. I get a rush out of playing the stuff. I also get hopeful because, if I can play it, I could write something similar. I'll never be able to say how amped I was when I transcribed both Another Day solows. To be able to play along with JP is really cool, to me. Be well. Matt B "That is the truth. PS Am I the only Jammer who is still being blown away by the number of cool choruses on Queensryches HitNF ???????????????????????? I don't suppose if you flat the 3rd (or 10th in this case) you could still get the fifth, producing the minor chord? Now that would be cool. KAI ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Dec 1997 11:12:57 -0500 (EST) From: Pat Daugherty To: Dream Theater Mailing List Subject: Powermad 1997 Message-ID: After a couple of days off from work I am back to post my review of Powermad 1997. I did catch Madden's illness-thanks pal... There were a lot of great bands playing at this thing. Unfortunately a lot of the big time mentioned bands canceled for one reason or another. This thing could have been organized a little better. It could have been publicized a little better as well since hardly anyone was there. The sound system was pretty bad since the bands couldn't hear a thing on stage. Friday's bands were pretty good. The bands I was impressed with was Frost Bite, Division (who had a good set after early sound problems), and Mercury Rising with the Ray Alder look alike vocalist. Other bands like Maraya, Misconception, and Enertia were good as well. I only saw some of Saturday's set. I had to leave in the middle of Soundscape's set. What I heard from them was wild stuff. They were good. Unfortunately I didn't get to see the Quiet Room. Powermad had other advantages to going. There was Century Media, Knights of the Round, Lasers Edge, and other vendors selling cds much cheaper than you can at any other time. I bought cds from The Quiet Room, Digital Ruin, 2 Angra cds, Symphony X, Spocks Beard, Veni Domine, Stratavarious import Best of (for 15$), the Gathering, Iced Earth. James Azrin (sp) was there and he bought a ton of cds... You could also talk to members of the bands. The guys in Digital Ruin were pretty cool. I dont know what to make of their concept album. It has a lot of samples. They plan to be on the web soon. Basically all the bands were pretty cool. Hopefully there will be a Powermad next year. |-------------------------------------------------------------------| | Pat Daugherty email_address_removed | |===================================================================| | Washington Redskins 6-6-1 | | Upon the murder scene of a NY Yankee fan at Camden Yards: | | "I didn't know that was illegal in Baltimore"-Munch on Homicide | |-------------------------------------------------------------------| ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Dec 1997 11:13:53 -0500 (EST) From: Pat Daugherty To: Dream Theater Mailing List Subject: Mike Bahr Message-ID: Mike, you should be considering yourself lucky. We were coming from the grocery store and walked right in the middle of a robbery, this guy coming out of another store with his gun and started shooting at us ! Luckily that guy was a bad shooter and the bullets hit this liquor store 3 feet from us. The guy ran into the woods and my boyfriend wanted to go after him, but I talked him out of it. The police caught the guy in about a week. I must've been shaking like an hour after this. For once in my life I had luck and no one else got hurt either. It's a real shame people come to this. I just have to be glad that I'm living in Finland, where nothing ever really happens ! Mike, you're a helluva guy !! ATTENTION esp. finnish jammers !! Who wants to get together before DT's show in Helsinki in March ? Many of us have been interested about it. A little too early to mention this, but I just thought you could start thinking about it ! (This in english so other jammers don't think I write anything bad about them..hehe =)) Satu PS: Met two guys from Danger Danger yesterday and Bruno Ravel said that he doesn't like Dream Theater or progressive music, well, didn't bother to talk about music much after that.. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 03 Dec 1997 11:32:30 -0500 From: Deedlit To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: xmas Message-ID: Well, I think you're going to find a LOT of variation on Christmas meals.
