At the time, the proposition, as I remember it, was for one hard rock/metal channel, one r&b & rap channel, one "mainstream" station and one channel of all non-music based programming (Real World, Singled Out, etc). I read a blurb on it in BAM (any Southern California jammers remember the article?). Curiously, it was around the same time that a bunch of major record labels wanted to form their own channel. But MTV put a stop to it once they realized this new multi-label channel would have been able to air videos from top-name artists BEFORE MTV could. He did this at the end of the show while Leno went through the closing, and before he would breath in every time, you would see his cheeks puff out a little. He was planning on the above feat, but at the time said he could probably only do it for 20 minutes. I guess he outdid his own expectations. DTC: Tower Records has put FII on a listening station, so people can get a listen to it before buying. I think that's great. Give more people a chance to hear them. They also had Big Wreck, so I finally got a chance to really hear their music. Not too bad. Still didn't buy it, though. I've only just begun, but New Millennium is definately up there. Those cool jazz licks that JP does during what over speakers sounds like a JM part is just too intense. I'd give you an absolute time, but my frigging CD player's display gave up the ghost :( Hell, I don't even know if the things he is doing are complicated (does it matter?), but they just fit so well, and I never noticed them before. Another example of what makes JP stand above other guitarists - when to lay back and groove. Of course, this comes from a jam band mentality (mine) where the jam involves the band, and not just the guitar player wanking. So listen to Phish and be enlightened! :) Speaking of complicated parts, I would never even attempt to try to figure out the guitar parts I described above. Why? Well, I don't know if I'm alone in this viewpoint, but whenever I learn to play a song, that song losses its mystery. I know I'm not explaining this well, but there is a certain magic in the unknown when it comes to music. Of course, I'm far from having perfect pitch, or even visualizing on the fretboard what is going on musically, so to me, only listening to song still leaves that song magical. And with a lot of my favorite songs, I will always try to preserve that magic. Probably the most noteable song that fits that description is Led Zeppelin's "Achilles Last Stand". A song that I still think is the most perfect rock song ever recorded. If I were to transcribe it, it would somehow lose its mystery. I couldn't listen to it in awe anymore. I would only listen to it in an almost analytical frame of mind. "Oh, Jimmys just playing off an E, and Jonesy just dropped that beat." Music should be more than just notes. It's the feeling, not fitting it on a treble clef. It's the "clima". The emotions evoked. That is what makes music special to me.
