Mike, I want a copy! :) we milled around in front of the stage for as long as we could, which you all know by now is standard Jammer operating procedure. Not only did I not see Pat and Kevin again, nobody came up to say hi. I saw Blevins' post, so I know you were there. Where were ya? And where the fuck were the rest of you?? A DT show is not complete to me until I meet a whole shitload of Jammers. Oh, well, the few Jammers that were cool enough to say hi were still a pleasure to meet and hang with. So, some of us got to hang out and talk to Mike after the show. I don't understand the Ballroom. Here it is, late November in DC, and the artists apparently have to go *outdoors* to get from the club to the dressing rooms. WTF is that? I would be pissed if I ever had to play there. (And naturally, Mike was all but naked after the show. He must have frozen his nipples off!) Liquid Tension Experiment is being remixed by Kevin Shirley (I guess they really were happy with his work) and will be released whenever Scott Hansen said it would be released. (And yes, Scott, I want all that cool stuff you collected!) Mike thanks whoever got him the videotape of the boxing match. He has the new Spock's album, and likes it. He said it's a bit straighter than the last two, but hey, it's Spock's. It's gotta be good. No one is sure yet who the opening act will be for future legs of the TII tour. When I asked about the newly announced shows, he said something like, "Well, that's still the same leg," so I guess you guys will see Big Wreck too. Enjoy. Mike told us that they had done Nightmare Cinema the night before, which was met with a chorus of "Awww!". He felt that the band was more "on" the previous night in NYC (which makes sense, cause that's home), but I have nothing to complain about. He also said that now that NC is not as much of a novelty as it used to be, they're going to have to start thinking of new stuff to play. Someone suggested Metropolis, and Mike cringed. :) Oh, if you ever get the chance to hang out and talk to Mike, and there was a recent boxing match, make sure you ask *first* whether he has heard the result before discussing it. (Oops. :) John Myung made an appearance, which was way cool. I got to ask him a little bit about the Stick. Other than that, we basically just hung out and shot the shit for a while. That's why I love Dream Theater: they're just like us, except they play better. :) To all the Jammers I met: hopefully we'll get together again and jam or take in another DT show or whatever. Remember: Directly in front of the stage, immediately after the show, is a good place to meet other Jammers. Try it. And wear Ytse. To those of you lucky enough to be seeing the coming shows, have a great time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Digital Man \|/ ____ \|/ "640 K ought to be enough email_address_removed "@'/ ,. \`@" memory for everyone." -Gates email_address_removed /_| \__/ |_\ "He won't need a bed http://www.cs.wm.edu/~cmerlo \__U_/ He's a digital man" -Peart ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Maintainer of the Official Dream Theater Frequently Asked Questions List http://www.cs.wm.edu/~cmerlo/dtfaq.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Nov 1997 00:40:08 +0100 From: Anna & Heike Boedeker To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: A quick (?) question Message-ID: > I happened to have the trusty old Jackson soloist out over in my Nice guitar :-) >girlfriend's dorm room last night, when her roomate walked in. It's unfortunate (for both bands) that they got paired with DT, however, because they're almost a total mismatch. Nevertheless, they sincerely tried to put on a good show. IMO, the succeeded. Their guitarist/singer plays one mean motherfuckin' slide. (And yes, he uses a lot of guitars. :) BTW, no one told me that Andrew McCarthy was playing rhythm guitar, or that Fieldy was playing bass. :) Anyway, I was impressed, and I recommend the CD to anyone who thinks they would like a basic, no-frills rock band influenced (most heavily, anyway) by Zeppelin and Soundgarden. Cool BW moment: Rob and Syrinx had seen the show in NJ two nights beforehand, and were involved in a "Booth!" chant aimed at BW's guitar tech (who we saw a lot of :). When they started it again last night, BW's singer said "Man, these Dream Theater guys have some hardcore fuckin' fans. These guys down here have been to New York, New Jersey, and now here. Cool, man." He also had kind words for DT, but was quick to remind us that "they're coming out later. We're Big Wreck." I would understand if someone thought he was being a dick about this, but a lot of the people in the crowd were being dicks to him, and I thought he handled it extremely well, with humor and with good music. So, ok, yada yada yada, demo tracks, Bafu found us in the crowd too (How??), Rooster, and then Derek walks out with his own spotlight. Yeah, the new guy started off the show. He sort of strutted out, smiled a wry smile, and made the hair on the back of my neck stand up as he played the opening... uh, notes to Lines in the Sand. Wow. This guy's a rock star. He is Mr. Show. He impressed me all damned night. He's so emotive when he plays. If you watch him for a couple of minutes, you begin to feel what he's feeling as he plays. It's magic. The rest of the band were in great form, too. (James held back some on Metro, but other than that I have no complaints.) Yes, Myung smiled. (He spoke, too! See Part 3. :) And who could blame him? They were having a great time. Some said that JP looked stone-faced. From what I could tell, this was only through TAMP and the first half or so of Scarred. I was guessing (and it's only a guess, I could be wrong) that he was thinking about his inspiration. But during Scarred, Mike and Derek were laughing about something, and then JP started laughing. So, there's James up there, trying to be all serious, singing "You say you want everyone happy. Well, we're not laughing" and there are those three nearly pissing themselves with laughter. It was priceless. :) Naturally, being a bassist, I was more concerned with JM's hands than anything else. But when he walked onto that stage with the Stick, I couldn't help but notice how fucking cool he looked. Black shirt, black leather pants, hair tied back, Mr. Cool, playing the damned hell out of that thing, and barely breaking a sweat. I *really* wish I had a camera for that. I don't even know how to explain what I felt, other than "When I grow up and become a rock star, I hope I look half as cool as that." Mike played a drum solo during Ytse Jam, and there was much rejoicing. I screamed "Please Don't Go!" and I noticed a scant few others did as well, but most people had no idea what that meant. Hmm. *Very* low asshole quotient last night. I was much pleased. There was the one guy directly in front of me holding up his jacket for the band to see. Naturally I was curious. When I finally realized that it's just some dumb jacket with James' signature on it, I was pissed. I finally yelled at him to put it down, and he did. Like, what's the point of that? They already know what their signatures look like. Then there was the exceedingly large, exceedingly drunk, exceedingly loud, and by all appearances totally unstoppable guy behind us. He was screaming something incoherent for most of the night, but it didn't bother me that much. However, during PMU, James was holding the mic over the first few rows of us so that we could sing along with the chorus. This guy decided that if he were about a foot closer, he could sing so that the entire club would be graces with his dulcet tones, or something. So, he attempted to steamroll Bafu and I like cartoon characters. Of course, that ended with one well-placed anonymous elbow to the sternum. (You're welcome, Bafu.) I bet that guy had one hell of a morning. Derek lost power during Scarred, and wasn't happy about it, but it came back on in time for him to play what he had to play. I can't say how much these guys all really got into everything and played their hearts out. (And Metropolis is an awesome closer. I agree, however, that LitS should be saved for the middle of the set. NM would be a cool opener.) Syrinx drove from Philly down to my house in Williamsburg on Saturday so that we could get an early start Sunday. We met up with Scotch and his gf Kate and were on the road by 12:30. Heard some cool stuff in the car that Syrinx had brought, like Arena's live album. Got to Phil Kaplan's house in Maryland around 3:00. Phil had said that he had a bunch of stuff in his basement, and he wasn't lying. Phil played drums, Scotch played guitar, and I played this gorgeous 4-string Carvin fretless. Mmmmm. I may have to seriously consider one of their 6 strings. Among the highlights of our little pre-show jam were about half of To Live Forever (we never did get to the part with the harmonies, though :) and Syrinx singing with us in a hardcore version of 6:00. *That* kicked ass. :) Jason Birzer was there hanging out with us, and we eventually met up with Ryan (whose last name escapes me) and we were on our way. We stopped to eat at the slowest Roy Rogers I've ever been to (but at least it was still there!). Very interesting place. There were two people working there as slowly as they could (hourly wage?), yet there was a sign saying that this restaurant was fully staffed and they were not accepting applications for emplyoment. It's a wonder that DC hasn't run itself into the ground yet. Drove through Georgetown and finally made our way to the Ballroom. There was quite a sizable line outside, so I thought I'd work the crowd and see who was there from the list. After selling my extra ticket (to Phil's brother, oddly enough) I walked up and down the line a couple times shouting "Bafu!!!!" and, occasionally, "Where are all the Ytsejammers?" One person - I mean ONE person - responded at all. (Hey Cliff!) Where the hell was everyone? Most people just looked at me as if I had nine heads. Ran into Pat D, and saw Kevin M from afar ("Red Wings Suck!" :) as we were let into the club. Interesting layout. Pretty big place, but only a fraction of it is used for shows. That is to say, the way the walls were placed, you had to be in one particular corner of the club to see (much less hear, I'd imagine) whoever is on stage. Who picks these places? So, there we are, like so many cattle (Moo!), waiting for Big Wreck to come on, when Syrinx turns to me and says, "Hey, I think this is Liquid Tension Experiment." And it was. We could tell by JP, MP, and JR's signature sounds (I'm no expert on Levin). Wow, that sounds good. I can't wait to get my hands on that stuff! (More about it in Part 3.) Some time during the playing of the demo stuff before Big Wreck, I heard my name being called, and turned around to see none other than Rob "Fibanez, Tenth Avenue Skull Crusher" Barker. I don't know *how* you found us.
