First of all, APSOG is one song, but it doesn't follow your conventional structure. Second of all, this discussion would be better served on the Fates Warning mailing list (see below). I want to know, is ReLoad a totally new album? 'cus i'd thought it was like a remix, like "further down the spiral" or something. If that's not the case, I think they should have used another title. I don't own any metallica albums myself, and I never really listened to them much, at all, really. So I have a unique perspective, because when Enter Sandman got all that airplay, I was like, "rockin, man!". While all around me where these pissed off fans who expected something else. To this day, I still think that's a great song. And I also like king nothing and a few others off load. I *still* don't own any albums, tho. My friend just lent me master of puppets because I wanted to see what the big deal was with "old" metallica. So I've been listening to that for a while now and I really like it. The problem that I have is that you openly admit you haven't heard either song yet. You're going on hearsay for both, and assuming that the Metallica one sucks and the DT one will be great. Why? I think Unforgiven II does a nice job of taking *A* riff from the first one, playing with it a bit, then taking it in a different direction. Whether it was intended to be a series or not is irrelevant. I seem to remember a few years back the guys in DT saying there wasn't going to be a Met. Pt II. I'm perfectly willing to listen to your opinion of songs that you have heard. So long as we don't actually say anything positive about the band, perhaps? I'm gonna be a pain in the ass about this. I think the recent Metallica record is a little like my feeling about "Falling Into Infinity" -- it's a cool record, better than the majority of what I've heard lately. I like it very much...I think it's really gonna grow on me. And I think it's the worst thing they've released yet. The tracks were recorded "Live in the U.S.A. in 1989 and 1992"... One of the more unique features to this bootie is that the band name Dream Theater is actually embossed (i think thats the word for it) on the front of the jewel box... Here's the deal with this boot: It is a copy of disc 2 of another boot known as "Consciously Unreal". Consciously Unreal is a show from Milan, Italy on April 5, 1993, and the remaining space on disc two is an excerpt from a show (with Charlie) on November 14, 1989 at the Ritz Club, NYC. The sound quality from both of these shows is a below average (IMO) audience source but not too bad. So "Live and Alive" is basically the last three songs from the show in Milan (TTT, WFS, LTL) and the remaining tracks are from '89 with Charlie singing. Further, this excerpt of the '89 show is also found on a boot called "Afterlife/Early Fantasy" with one extra track. Happy bootleg shopping. Secondly its music we're talking about. Objectivity simply doesnt exist in music or any art form. The whole beauty of it comes from one's personal interpratation of it...that is, subjectivism. If you were to be completely objective with music, you wouldnt state whats good and bad about it, but simply describe and analyze it, period. > but I noticed that keys on FII are rather lame (they are not such > emphasised like on earlier CDs). Depends on your definition of the term "progressive". I realize this ground's been tread *many* a time before, so I'll be brief. If you're talking nutsy weird sig stuff, well, maybe not for most of their stuff. But, if you're talking about diversity in songmaterial, Tull is most definitely in the infamous category. They've got more 'eras' than Rush. Blues-based to hard rock to album-long compositions to folk rock to jazz-rock to keyboard-oriented to 'American' rock (what I like to call the "Dire Straits era") to Middle-eastern flavored... And everywhere in between. Tull is one of the most innovative bands I can think of. And it goes even deeper than that. Look at the album "Aqualung" (since everybody knows it) for instance. You've got everything from the rockin' "Cross-Eyed Mary" (which Maiden covered -- says something there!) to "Mother Goose", a song based mostly on acoustic guitar and flutes. If you're looking for an album with an *incredible* amount of diversity, though, go for "Nightcap". It's a collection of damn-good outtakes and oddities from over the years (songs too weird to fit onto their normal albums, that sort of thing). But don't expect to hear the same band you've heard on the radio... 'Course, I don't care for the term myself. 'Progressive', that is. But, hey, when in Rome...
