Chris P did a pretty good job (being the bastard he is. . .;) of it already. . suffice to say, one persons opinion is their _opinion_, and nothing will make that opinion "right" or "wrong." One can say that something is musically less complex (heh. .although that's arguable, too), but not that it's worse. That's all opinion... Oh yeah, and: > > E.g. If a footballer makes a misses I criticize him. If he can't play > > football he had better stay home and knit. I cannot play football > > so I didn't play professionally in public. Actually, I agree with this. .. I'm sick of people saying "let's see you do better" when I say something sucks... Dammit, if I say it sucks, it sucks! I don't have to prove anything! And besides. . I could do better... I just choose not to. But the real reason I write: > > Listening to "Peruvian S." there is a fantastic part (when I'm flying) > > and suddenly I fall dawn (4:20). This permutation doesn't fit! I totally agree. I absolutely love Peruvian Skies... but I find this part kinda throws me off a little every time. Really, it's just a reprise with distortion of the main theme, but it doesn't seem to fit. I don't exactly know why. . . maybe the song had progressed past that point, or maybe it needed a better transition. The pseudo-solo over the D-A, C-G progression is absolutely beautiful (yes, it's been done before, but who cares?)... but I kinda wish they would take it somewhere else after that. However, once they get into that theme, they really do take it places. They transform it very well, and the the variations and changes are really well done... they bring it back to the chorus beautifully. But again with that main theme thing. . . oh well. _I_ would have done it differently. And better! And that's not my opinion... it's god given fact. But I wont say how I would have done it, because MP might be reading this and he might steal my ideas! He replied that a live album would not happen, but there might be a chance that a video could happen. Please share this message > with anyone you know that has 'net access. W A R N I N G: There's a new virus on the loose that's worse than anything I've seen before! It gets in through the power line, riding on the powerline 60 Hz subcarrier. It works by changing your serial port pinouts, and then reversing the direction your disks spin. Over 5,000 systems have been hit by it here in the San Francisco bay area alone! And that's just in the last 12 minutes. It attacks DOS, Mac, Unix, TOPS-20, Apple-II, VMS, MVS, Multics, RSX-11, ITS, Casio personal organizers, IBM 1130, and VHS systems, also some programmable VCRs. To prevent the spread of the virus: 1. Don't use the powerline. 2. Don't use batteries either, since there are rumors that this virus has invaded most major battery plants and is infecting the positive poles of the batteries. (You might try hooking up just the negative pole.) 3. Don't upload or download files. 4. Don't store files on floppy disks or hard disks. 5. Don't read email messages. Not even this one! 6. Don't use serial ports, modems, or phone lines. 7. Don't use keyboards, screens, or printers. 8. Don't use switches, CPUs, memories, microprocessors, or mainframes. 9. Don't use electric lights, electric or gas heat or airconditioning, running water, writing, fire, clothing or the wheel. I'm sure if we are all careful to follow these 9 easy steps, this virus can be eradicated, and the precious electronic fluids of our computers can be kept pure. For more information, send email to: "Mr. Arlington Hewes" P.S.: I'm just wondering... If I happened to have my equipment infected, will it make me constantly play out of tune on fretless bass? How was it going to affect the spin of my stomach if I happened to eat some food prepared w/an infected microwave? What could I do then? Have an antivirus program run on me? Or should I go to see the famous doctor Mc Afee? .. :-) P.P.S.: Viruses cannot be transmitted by reading email. Viruses are programs, which means they must be executed. Typically, then, they'll be in email attachments, not the actual email messages. Real warnings about viruses and other network problems are issued by a variety of response teams (CIAC, CERT, ASSIST, NASIRC, etc.) and are digitally signed by the sending team using PGP. If you download a warning from a teams web site or validate the PGP signature, you can usually be assured that the warning is real. Warnings without the name of the person sending the original notice, or warnings with names, addresses and phone numbers that do not actually exist are probably hoaxes. What to Do When You Receive a Warning Upon receiving a warning, you should examine its PGP signature to see that it is from a real response team or antivirus organization. To do so, you will need a copy of the PGP software and the public signature of the team that sent the message. The CIAC signature is available from the CIAC web server at: http://ciac.llnl.gov. If there is no PGP signature, see if the warning includes the name of the person submitting the original warning. Contact that person to see if he/she really wrote the warning and if he/she really touched the virus. If he/she is passing on a rumor or if the address of the person does not exist or if there is any questions about the authenticity or the warning, do not circulate it to others. Instead, send the warning to your computer security manager or incident response team and let them validate it. When in doubt, do not send it out to the world. Your computer security managers and the incident response teams teams have experts who try to stay current on viruses and their warnings. In addition, most anti-virus companies have a web page containing information about most known viruses and hoaxes. You can also call or check the web site of the company that produces the product that is supposed to contain the virus. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Nov 97 14:43:33 -0600 From: "Brian Hayden" To: email_address_removed, email_address_removed Subject: Re: WARNING!!! This guy (Derek) has added more input to this band, and quite frankly maybe a sparkle in the bands eye. The music changes (ah-ha! a revelation.. the word PROGRESSIVE=CHANGE!) If Derek was musically submissive why did he open the show I was at with a kick-ass solo, you know the one at the beginning of Lines in the sand ON FII.*** >but I noticed that keys on FII are rather lame ***Lame?? What?? How could anyone write that? When I hear the Derek "effect" on the album another artist comes to mind- Rick Wakeman. I wouldn't be surprised if Derek is at his playing level.*** There are also some unsuitabilities in > "Trial OT". Again, I'm rising and all of a sudden trumble down > (3:09 and 4:15) -approximate time- ***Well, you really hit a sour point here, you knocked what most jammers consider the most positive song on the album. This song is PROGRESSIVE, meaning it changes. What are you doing these days because, I was wondering if you wanted to play for DT on Keys... they could use a new musician. (not!) 3. This isn't a knock at where you are from, and I don't know where it is, not to mention that I really don't care all that much about spelling.. but yours has to be the worst I have ever seen on the jam.. :( If you are from the US, you need to work on your spelling, if you aren't.. I will have a new-found respect for you considering you are writing into an english speaking list. You might consider writing where you are from on each jam...It will gain you patience. ***Don't take it personally, but maybe you consider being a fan of another band, they might play up to your level and not disappoint you so much! Keep in mind that if this album was not marketable and didn't sell a shit-load of CD's, DT might not be able to make another album. This might be a good thing in your eye, so you won't be disappointed again.*** Rock on! J ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Nov 1997 01:56:16 -0700 From: "Vincent G. LuPone" To: email_address_removed Subject: REview of REload for all you REfans :) (THIS IS LONG) Message-ID: If you hate Metallica, a band that principally influenced OFB, scroll to the next header. If you love heavy music, read on. Hey, What can I say? I went into this week not knowing what I was gonna get out of the new Metallica release. Early reports had said that the band got pissed off at people for calling them soft and they were gonna release a speed metal album to shut people up. Later, Lars said it was just straight-forward metal. Even later I read an interview with Kirk and James that really pissed me off. Something about not giving a fuck and that the album would be more "experimental". I didn't know what to expect. Then I heard the first single "The Memory Remains". Eh, okay...Load, but heavier, with a chic singing an annoying vocal line. I finally got the idea of the song from the video. My interpretation...'the same old grind'. Think about it :) E-mail me privately if you want a further explanation. I really like this song now that I've heard it in the context of the whole album. As for the rest of the CD, I was VERY shocked to hear what's there. Okay, quick breakdown: 1) The songs are definitely faster, heavier, more complex, and better than those on "Load". These songs MOVE. 2) James' rhythm guitar can be heard in both speakers (!!!!), unlike "Load" which featured Kirk on 'annoying guitar' in the right speaker. 3) Lars found that extra bass drum he lost 2 years ago :) 4) Kirk's solos sound old and lifeless. Very boring for the most part. Yeah, I can play blues-based pentatonic scales all day long too man, that doesn't mean I _have_ to. 5) The rhythm guitars sound really good. Nice 'n heavy Mesa tone. Not the full rip-yer-face-off sound of AJFA or "Metallica", but still ball-bursting. 6) No thrash or speed metal :( And now for a song by song break down: FUEL Damn fine song. Really moves. Nice riffs and some great bass and tom work by Lars. Sounds like a faster "Ain't My Bitch". THE MEMORY REMAINS (i.e. "The Wounded Bassist Shuffle" heheh ;) Good song overall, but the main riff makes me sick. There are some really heavy moments, but there are too few. This song's a good one, but IMO it belongs on "Load" and "The House That Jack Built" belongs here. Jus' my own sonic impression. DEVIL'S DANCE If the guitar was thicker this would be perfect. "Sad But True" meets THTJB. Good song about the consequences of temptation and sin. Has a Pull Me Under-esque ending too :) THE UNFORGIVEN II Very moving song, much heavier than the original. It ties up the story of the first song. I'm not a big fan of the twang bit, but it adds a bit of color and character to the song, breaking it up a bit. Nice effect. Nice heavy emotional song from these guys. I haven't heard anything like it since the original Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters. This is a fav song of mine now. BETTER THAN YOU (i.e. jam.wav ;) Another heavy rockin' song. Anyone else notice the Burning My Soul-esque vocal delay thing after Hetfield says the title? Some really neat key changes and stuff. Solo sounds like some basic Joe Perry-style crap. Kirk is the only bad part of this song. One thing Load did have is a few killer solos. BM, AMB, and KN all featured some very cool lead stuff, but it's unfortunately absent on this record. Kirk, put down the Les Paul and pick up the ESP, dude ;) SLITHER Good rocker, but I haven't heard this song enough to give it it's due. CARPE DIEM BABY I thought this was another slow blues song from the band, but man it gets wild with the different, cool chords and vocals...definitely a winner. This one makes me jump up and say "Fuck yeah, that's cool! I've never heard that before." Strikes a real slow-anger nerve with me, if you get what I mean ;)~ BAD SEED This song should be even longer. It's just plain mean. Lars, keep up the double bass! WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE Newsted gets a writing credit...write more, Jason! I love the ideas here. Same type of chorus chord/vocal work as in CDB. Very heavy sound in this one. Metallica has "groove" down pat. James is taking his voice where I never thought it could go. He's a REAL talent here. PRINCE CHARMING Anyone else notice the glam beat at 3:34? Sounds like old-school gang vocals :) Seriously though, this song FUKIN' ROCKS!!! This is my obvious stand-out favorite on the CD. Very heavy, fast, groovin', with great lyrics and some great rhythm guitar work. The reason I started listening to Metallica way back when is back. James' rhythm technique. IT'S BACK!! To bad the song is in concert E again (Eb in this tuning). LOW MAN'S LYRIC Wow, and Irish folk song. I never thought of Metallica doing a song like this, but it's pretty cool. The hurdy gurdy is a cool instrument for this. It fits well in the song. It shows that Metallica can conquer diverse and challenging styles of music. Dream Theater has that same great quality...versatility. ATTITUDE Besides the Led Zeppelin start riff, this song belongs on the black album. Great fast groove with more killer chords and the guitar sound is just FAT. Vinnie's fav #2. "Born Into Attitude". FIXXXER Outlaw Torn 2? The song has some very cool moments, and it rocks, but it drags a little bit. It sounds like a song that's gonna grow on me with some patience, much like OT, Bleeding Me, and Fates Warning's APSOG. Well, there you have it, my ReView of "ReLoad". If you're pissed that this was on the 'jam, never post about Megadeth, Fates Warning, Queensryche, Pantera, etc. ever again. Thank you. I will continue discussing all of these great bands with all of the intelligent people here that wish to talk about it. There are more than enough (somewhere around 20% or so ;).
