You'd make it a pop up book with pictures of purple dinosaurs and crap. Then we'd end up giving coloring books to all higher government officers, and the whole point would be lost as they fight over who gets the "Goldenrod" colored crayon, and who has to use the generic fake Crayolas and stuff. (I'm sure if Derek knew what I looked like, and actually read this list for the past year, he'd kick my ass for bringing that back up) I don't hear Petrucci dominating anything but his fretboard. DT's one of the most evenly spread out groups I listen to (which is a lot nowadays, thanks to many of you) as far as the individual pieces are concerned. If anything's dominating their music, it's talent. :) /end ass kiss mode Seriously, go through all their albums, you're bound to find one or two guitar driven, key-driven, vocally-driven (work with me on that one, I'm on a roll), and even drum/bass driven lines. > > Replies: "You would play (or arrange) better than DT ;)" > > to my objections to music on FII are childish misunderstandings. > > I have the justifiable right to judge proffesionals, NOT BEING > > a professional myself! > > E.g. It's actually a pretty good song, judging from my first few listens. I guess it's also safe to assume that you won't bother to buy Metropolis Pt II when it comes out, because you are obviously very against bands writing sequels to their own songs. OK, This is a small point and I should have clarified, but A mind Beside itself is a SERIES of songs and MET parts I and II I had always assumed to be a series rather than a rehash of the same song meaning that they are songs that are thematically related, much like the songs in a concept album. I get the feeling from reading the lyrics to Unforgiven II (which was never meant to be a series presumably) and hearsay on the net that the song uses the same intro/choruses that the sequal is sort of the same songrehashed for Metallica's selling pleasure. I didn't really like when Savatage redid the "and in the dark I hear your screams" reworking on Handful of Rain. I realize that Jon was saying goodbye to Chris and I appreciate the sentinment so I really don't mind it all that much becaues Zak sings it better anyway, but I would rather have heard something novel. The Unforgiven II may be a very good song, it will sell well, and that is why Metallica put it on the album, nother single, nother billion dollars. I think that it was done because they are loosing steam in the songwriting department. I don't mean that they are selling out or any crap like that, I'm just saying that they are running out of ideas because they just don't have the tools to work with. Take Megadeth for example, Megadeth has changed its sound just as much as Metallica have if not more and so people are crying sell outs and other crap (not as many are, but it's still happening) The difference is, is that while the Megadeth stuff between Cryptic Writings and Killing is my Business is as far removed as Reload is Kill 'em All, but Megadeth are getiing better, tighter, more professional, (gasp, more prog) while Tellica is just getting sloppy and relying on the same old stuff. Megadeth is expanding their horizons by doing all sorts of musical endevears: movie soundtracks, theme songs for ESPN 2's X-treme games, writing books, solo albums, side projects, clothing companies, political activist groups, and many others while Metallica is seems content to Reload...er Rehash just another meaningless rock album to make a buck. I never did jump on the 'Tallica bashing bandwagon when the Black album came out, I loved it, when Load came out, I bought it, when I saw teh video for The Memory Remains liked the video with the mute button on. The video reminded me of the Everclear, Everything to everyone song, only better (ie more expensive) but unfortunately the song also reminded me of Everclear, actually I think that the Everclear song has far more melody and is more catchy. Change is good, Megadeth does it well, Metallica does not IMHO. Changeing one's sound keeps one from becoming sterile but it must be an authentic change. I think that both Megadeth and Metallica enjoy and are proud of the songs on their new albums, I just feel that they can be proud of them for different reasons. Deth can be proud of brilliant musicianship, tight songwriting, and keeping metal from becoming stagnant while bringing it to the masses. Their song Trust (great song) was the Number One most requested US song on metal radio when it came out. Metallica can be proud of millions of dollars worth of sales. If I just heard the music of Metallica, I would give them the benefit of the doubt and just say that there tastes were changing, but it's there obvious attempts to fit in with the look, attitude of the whole alternative scene that makes me believe that they are trying to make a buck. They used to veheminately trash eye-make up wearing, pimpin jock rock bands who get chicks by stuffing potatoes down the front of their pants and now...viola Metallica Jovi! I will buy Metropolis Part II when it comes out because I expect it to be a trully different song with a continuing story. If they have the same intro/verses/choruses I WILL be upset because I expected more, but, considereing that DT during I&W rarely reapeated any section in the same song and Met II is supposedly going to be in that style I doubt we'll be hearing "The smile of dawn.." again and I'm buying the CD to get the bonus tracks that will be included so YES I am EXTREMELY against bands REPEATING themselves, sequals are OK as long as they are not rehashes. Damn this thing got long! Sorry for the rant. If so, then you are bound to be disappointed. Derek's good, but in a different way than Kevin was. As for the lame sound on FII, I blame that on poor mixing. I was very diappointed that the keys were mixed so low. There are some cool things going on in there if you listen carefully. Sorry, I don't get your logic here. The problem of being a non-professional is that you have no idea what being a professional is like. (in that profession, of course.) Using your football example, just because a player makes a mistake, doesn't mean he is a bad football player. You can criticize all you want, but you can't judge him because you have no idea what it is like to be him. Hopefully, his coaches do. If he doesn't measure up, it is up to the people who know what they are doing to get rid of him. > 4. I thought I&W was a little disjointed at first until I got used to it. I do agree with you about PS with the "Metallica" part. It doesn't fit and prevents it from being a great song IMO. I still think that it is good. I don't agree with your opinion of TOT, though. I don't see it. > 5. Well, last night was the last night of a wonderful experience for me (as well as David Hans Plotkin...aka Big Perm or DHP). We saw Dream Theater for the 4th time in one month!! (not to mention seeing Yes just last Saturday.) Here is the 4th of 4 installments of the Great UpperMidWestYtseTour reviwes. MADISON: Like you all may know, my (Mattymo and DHP's) stomping grounds. We've all been waiting to hear James say "Alright Madison!!" and he delivered. Matty and I showed up at the Barrymore at around 3:35 or so. Scott Hansen was already there patiently waiting. The B'more is a nice place...about 4 rows worth of pit area and then seated. Anyway, after we met Scott we hung around both in front of and behind the place. Eventually we saw Derek run from the building to the bus and we said "Hey Derek" and he in is super personalble self said "hey guys what's up...it's fucking cold out here" and so on, shook hands and chatted for a sec. He got on the bus and we were given the notion that we'd be able to talk to a few more members sooner or later. Nice. After more waiting we were oput front and thru the windows saw McGee (Hey McGee!!! It was a pleasure meeting you!) MIke's drum tech, and we got him to stand outside and freeze his nipples of while we talked with him about various cartoon shows and various new pornos. He suggested was stay out by the bus and wait for Mike (in a nut shell). So, out by the bus were we. Matty pulled his car pretty close to the bus so we could warm up. James showed up in a car, maybe just getting back from the airport, and quickly went into the bus after saying hello. A few minutes later James and Derek went inside. THEN Mike came out. We quickly jumped outta the car like police in persuit and met up with Mike. He immeadiately recognized Scott and they started talking. Initially,I got starstruck. But then I remembered who I was dealing with (though he's still a star, right?). Mike, you're a gentleman and a scholar. After some NICE trivia (Christmas CD and it's possible contents) he invited us in to see soundcheck. That was the B - O - M - B. We had to walk across the stage (OFB's favorite stage) to get to the floor and John was already up there nooling on his guitar. I walked by him and smiled and stuck out my hand and he shook it and said "hello." ("Finally, I thought. Here he is, and all I can do is shake his hand? Well, I better be able to talk to him later.....") Mike got us to the floor in a Spinal Tappish style and we sat and talked. Some topics: Liquid Tension (THIS SHOULD HAUL!!), Kevin in LA, Setlists, Next year in America (Matty: howabout an Evening with Dream Theater? Mike: I've got something better than that in mind), and other odds and ends. What a great guy. Eventually he got pulled away to do soundcheck and as he left he said "I'll get you guys some passes and stuff." While on stage behind the kit he said "passes are on their way" through his mike (Kind of like Smell The Glove is Here!) and then Bill B (tour manager?) walked up and handed us some goodies and talked to Matty (goodies: 4 after show passes for DHP,me, Matty, Scott and one photo pass for Scott). You probably heard about sound check from Matty so I'll keep this short. Mike: "I'm bored to death....let's play You Not Me. Derek: Tonight? Mike: NOW! Metropolis was cool. I kept thinking "what the hell am I doing? We shouldn't be here! It was like I was just hanging at the local high school theter during some rockband's practice....the atmosphere was so friendly and relaxed yet it was Dream Theater and this was no highschool. Unreal. So, after a trip to the bathroom and a look at the nice security guards (vinnie's gotta roll of certs in his pocket) the doors were open and I was at the front of the stage for the second time (in a month no less!) I met BIG PERM and told him all the good news (unfortunately he couldn't make soundcheck due to his studies) and gave him the aftershow pass. Needless to say, he was happy. BIG WRECK: I like these guys. They were nice, and so were we, and they were on!! Dave admitted to me that he likes them. I concur. I hope they cheer up. It's not their fault (like I've said before) that they were mismatched with DT. The set went really fast. SET BREAK: Ok. so sue me. I WAS looking around for high school girls. Leave me alone. DREAM THEATER. Man. I can barely remember the show. It was such a blur. Mike was waving at us. I made Derek the funk face and he smiled back. I caught John P spacing out at one point and saw him snap outta it and smile back. Even HE can get lost in thought while on stage! James was RIGHT ON. THe crowd was pretty cool EXCEPT for this little fokker behind me. I was about ready to drop his tiny ass. ANYWAY. Set changes were alredy covered by the guy with the goatee and the jean jacket (I wasn't introduced to him...yep, looking for high school girls) but I know he posted, and his e-mail starts with "s". AFTER SHOW. SNAP. We were brushed to the side of the stage and waied for about a half an hour. Eventually Mike came in with a Coors Light (hey mike. I know you know your beer, right? Remember this is Wisconsin? Next time you're in town I'll treat you to some good beer here. Deal?) Dave got his Yes bootled to Mike who seemed impressed to get the tape. I'm hoping he enjoys it (and so is DHP!) I managed to get Mikes autograph on my FII cover. James came in and signed and talked, he signed my FII cover. **No I'm not going to comment obout the people there who asked stupid questions, but there were some** John P came in and chatted and signed, he signed my FII cover. I told him this is our 4th concert with them this month and he was happy about that. Derek came in and some small rubber tiny shorts wearing blonde bombshell (probably barely 18) acosted him. They talked and he gave her a nice wet one on the lips. Boy, to be the King of all Rock stars. What a dream!! Derek signed my FII cover. We talked with him and he asked about the Jam and if they were getting good reviews. I told him "of course!! If not they answer to me and Dave here" We also mentioned that it was our 4th show in Nov and he was "ALL right. Through snow and everything" We were thinking "hell yea." I went back over to Mike and asked him about his double bass technique. He tried to explain "I think with these...what are these....calves? I think so. Use the ball of your foot and....well, like this" and he showed me on a chair of the theater then said "I don't really know how i learned it! But It must not be muscle cuz I've got chicken legs. I must get it from here" (and grabs his belly). A guy in the crowd said "well I noticed that most progressive drummers are slim and precise while you're just an animal" and Mike replied "Well, at least I'm not * ***** **** ***** (insert famous drummer's name with highest respect, I HOPE....right Mike?) I was taken aback, but then realized he can say that. Then, Mike said "I can say, that, can't I" Yes you can! So shit. I still am just on a cloud. All the people where I live are like "wow , you met them" I'm like Hell YA! DHP, MATTY, SCOTT, me and a lady friend of ours (I can't for the life of me remember her name, dammit) went out to IHOP afterwards and ate like crazy. Dave got some fries and we had no ketchup, and even though he was waiting for his pancakes (fries and pancakes?) he put syrup on his fries. Later, he was heard saying "All I wanted was a big ass plate....B...A..P...of fries." So, now we've gotta find a BAP for DHP. Well, that be the end. I didn't go to my first 2 classes today (9:55 and 11:00) and wrote this instead and, well you know....remember what James pretended to pass to Mike who then partook then pretended to pass to Derek during the begining of Peruvian Skies last night? So, there you have it. The best month is now over. But....Christmas is right around the way. ********** D E R E K ************ You have to figure out a way to let me know who that chick was that you were macking on last night.
