From what I >understand it's a very unorthodox technique.... but the sound is >HUGE!!!! Hardware-wise, he doesn't use a conventional drumkit, but a *huge* arsenal of multipercussion all around him, in the midst of which he sits on the floor. He emulates some of the coventional functions, i.e. he uses a snare, a ride etc., for the bass function he has a big tom etc. etc. For special effects, e.g. his favorite one is stroking a small gong and then slowly dipping it into a bucket of water. Being a thoroughly trained Indian musician (his mother is famous singer Shoba Gurtu) he also extensively uses tablas (actually a pair of hand drums consisting of a smaller drum called tabla, and kinda "bass drum" called bayan), either the conventional way in pair, or playing the tabla alone w/ a drum stick in his other hand, to do ride, snare etc. additionally. Brainware-wise both he and McLaughlin use rhythmical concepts derived from Classical Northern Indian practise... What in Western practise is considered a rhythm in Indian music only serves as a basic unit for longer basic schemata, which in a way then resemble more of a chorus than a single bar. Within this basic frame now both the percussionist and the soloist -- a Classical Indian ensemble usually consists of a tabla or pakhavaj player, a soloist who may be either a vocalist or play an instrument like sitar, surbahar, sarod, violin etc. etc., as well as one to two tampura players to provide a bordun function as the musical concept is strictly unitonal/modal in approach -- also do rhythmic impro... It mostly makes sense of thinking of it like e.g. playing 5 against 7 etc. The important thing about Indian practise is that all musicians meet again on the "1", which can be a real relief of tension w/ longer rhythmical periods (you have to watch an educated Indian or Pakistani audience!! :-)) -- which is the main difference to say West African drumming where they create still more complex polyrhythmic layers e.g. w/ the "1" of one player falling on the "3" of another one etc. They also have larger groups... nothing of this sophisticated and refined Indian chamber music flair... > BTW, has anyone done the "Trail of Beers" parody yet? Testament should do Caught in a Web... and Savatage should do Pull Me Under :-) >That would be a cool thread (and somebody stop me if I'm doing something >that's not allowed in the jam): what bands would you see doing what DT >songs, and make them kick ass?=20 I love Madsword's Ytse Jam anyway... 6:00 could be recorded by a reformation of Watchtower (as appropriate for this real brainmelter :-) maybe they even did an uptempo version of it :-)))) Further, maybe Learning To Live by King Crimson -? (guess it would be hard on Belew to identify w/the lyrics, but Bruford and Levin would make it rhythmically come alive fershur)... what else? Maybe The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun by Threshold or Mayadome... This definately would be killer... :-) Enough, Heike ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Nov 1997 07:56:11 EST From: "Joshua P. Walkowicz" To: email_address_removed Subject: kick-ass band in Chicago tonight Message-ID: Hey guys, there is a great band playing in Chicago tonight called the Tea Party. I know that there are a couple of other people on this list who listen to them and they will back me up when I say this band is great. They are playing at Thurstons at 7pm (I guess it is on W. George). They are a trio out of Canada and they get absolutely no publicity in the States, so there will be very few people there. Anyways, this band is the most talented band I have seen outside of Dream Theater, and they are unbelievable live. Give them a shot if you want to hear some great music, I give my personal guarantee that you will like it (well, every DT fan I have met that has heard of them loved them). If they can get me to drive 2.5 hours by myself to see them, they must be good..... You should reply to this one, too... looks like it's going to be funny... :-) >and various other dance shit and when hearing DT they start having what >appears to be muscle spasms in their legs cause they can't tap their >feet along to TTT from start to finish in a regular beat. I'm not Ha ha... I guess it has more to do w/ a generally superficial to shallow approach to life... like back in grammar school I just felt surrounded by male dancing fools of the Bobby Brown type, too, who were a complete turn-off to me. I really preferred Jaco Pastorius to John Travolta :-) Seriously, most of this kids' stuff is more about a certain lifestyle than *music*... sure, in turn they'd probably accused me of being into musicians' music... My major concern is that I find this type of stuff unsuited to convey *authentic* emotions, that's why I hear a whole variety of stuff from Satyricon and Six Feet Under (I have aggressive emotions, too!! :-)) to Isotope and Embryo... Interestingly the only emotion that hip hop, tekkkno, dancefloor and all this stuff evokes in me is *sadness, melancholy and despair*, probably over the estrangement I see there... maybe it reminds me of my misspent youth practising 5 hours on bass a day as a 15 year-old and playing in bands w/ guys at least 5 years older b/c my classmates were too shallow. :-( I also strongly disagree that one couldn't dance to prog, fusion etc., though probably not the way most kids approach it... Try e.g. dancing to Watchtower's Control & Resistance, there you really have something to *feel & express* with your body (other than boredom like in case of the Spice Girls :-)) >generalising on ALL females either (don't get me wrong there, shit, that >could be BIG trouble) but most girls I know hate DT because they just >sound too obscure. Them listening to Metropolis would be like trying to >force a basketball down a garden hose....too much information. When I first heard DT it was kinda revelation to me... I always have had a love for odd-time sigs, and I also felt one could do more interesting (and intense!) stuff than just fusion... Perhaps I also should mention that I didn't get into this stuff "just b/c" of my then bf, as you might suspect... In fact it was me who supplied him w/ stuff ranging from Rush's A Farewell to the Kings to Munju's High-Speed Kindergarden, and also taught him some more advanced music theory :-) Heike ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Nov 1997 10:12:45 -0500 From: Eric Rodger To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Mid Term Review Message-ID: >2) As one who was worried to slow death about what Kevin Shirley could >have done to the disk, I think that his impact was probably "a break >even". Every time I listen to FII, I end up questioning how good this disc could have been if the production didn't suck so bad. So, I disagree with your last statement above. There are some really great songs on this disc, but I feel like something was missing every time I listen to it. This doesn't happen when I listen to any other release. There are songs on Awake which I now would consider skipping, but I always feel like I ate too much and couldn't fit another bite after listening to it, or I&W. FII leaves me feeling like I just ate liver, and had no desert to get that taste out of my mouth. I gotta give the thumbs down to Shirley, and Storm (because I still don't like the cover - it seems so UN-DT). I love the songs, I just wish they sounded better. One of my favorite bands. Does anybody know whatever happened to this band? III Sides To Every Story <----This album kicks ass!!! Unfortuantely, they had to break up, not because they sucked or anything, but mostly from problems within the band and the all too common "musical differences" Nuno had one style where Gary had another.. As for Extreme, well you can catch their new band, yup, they're called Van Halen, with Gary on vox. The new Van Halen (supposedly, though I haven't heard it yet) sounds exactly like Extreme because of Gary's influence on the band. That's why it is rumored that Van Halens' album was not approved by the record company (even though it was ready for release this past summer) I think you'll see it on the shelf soon.
