Actually, I think he was referring to "acronyms" of DT songs, no? In other news, I'm rather disappointed with Metallica's latest attempt, "The Memory Remains." Sounds like a dying goat/cat hybrid, whining its last breath or something. However, cheers to WAAF Boston for their "Metallica: A to Z" aired last Saturday evening...they brought back some of the good old shit: Leper Messiah, Creeping Death, Jump in the Fire, etc... Don't see "Bean." It was drowned, Americanized humor which lacked the true spirit of British Beanism. Whoever made the movie also decided to take scenes directly from the British stuff and stick them into the mix. I was just thinking (one of these rare moments), and I got to the conclusion that I'd rather see another band doing a cover of Metropolis Part I than to see DT re-record it. DT had their chance, they did it very well, I happen to like the sounds they came up with (I even got used to the trigger - sue me.), and at the time it was what they wanted. A DT Tribute CD would kick my ass. Queensr=FFche could do Status Seaker and= it would make my life. I'd die in peace. Then we'd have Angra doing Metropolis Part I (doesn't Angra always pick up the technical songs on tributes? I wonder why ;D). We could even have Sarah McLachlan doing Wait for Sleep. That would rule all. Plus: Fates Warning could do The Killing Hand (Ray would just nail down those vocals, wouldn't he), Journey could do Another Day (which already sounds like a real good Journey song), Judas Priest could do Pull Me Under (RRRRRRRRipper Owens, MMMMMMMMetal), Devin Townsend (can you imagine a tribute without him?) could do Under a Glass Moon (can you imagine him singing "Morning comes too early" with that kickass voice he's got and make it all gnarly?). Then we'd have Rush doing Trial of Tears (well, we'd try and see if they want to do a song by some "bar musicians", as Neil Peart put it...). Metallica would do Burning My Soul. Can you imagine Megadeth doing Peruvian Skies and Pantera doing Lie?=20 That would be a cool thread (and somebody stop me if I'm doing something that's not allowed in the jam): what bands would you see doing what DT songs, and make them kick ass?=20 K. I put up a web page dedicated to this CD sale and it can be found at: http://nw3.nai.net/~axe/cdsale.htm The CD's that people here would probably be interested in are: 1. DREAM THEATER - THE DANCE OF ETERNITY - 2 CD SET - $50 Yes, this is *the* 2 CD live DT show that everyone knows about.. The quality is fantastic on this set, and hey, it has the old version of ACOS, need I say more??? I'd like to put this out there as a small, short auction item..I'm not trying to rip anyone off here...so if you are interested I'd like to get $50 for the set, but I am open to higher offers...see web page for details. ---ALSO-- 2. DREAM THEATER - DREAM OUT LOUD - 1 CD Live in Buffalo. $30 This is an awesomme recording from the Impaxx Club in Buffalo, NY back in 1993 on the I+W tour...Highlights for me include Status Seeker, To Live Forever, and Mike's Drum solo!!! I am asking $30 which is what I originally paid for this CD... 3. SHADOW GALLERY - CARVED IN STONE - 1 CD $20 First off, let me say that I paid $20 to get this CD about a year ago... It was something like $16 + 3 or 4 bucks for shipping and handling... I just couldn't get into the tunes on this disc...anyways its in mint condition.... Shows: I think what James actually said at the Roseland is "What is this, like Monday night or something? Where is everyone... Thanks a lot for all of you turning out. " I'm not sure, but I think I liked Seattle better. Maybe because I was on the floor that time. All I remember is being right underneath John Myung in SFO on the Awake tour and it got so hot that I left for two songs to cool off. And I guess I'm just big enough not to be a dick when trying to push my way up front. Jim did well; that's the way to get up there. They played "La Grange" in Portland, but James stopped and said he couldn't remember the words so they stopped. They played some different kind of jam in the middle of Metropolis I in Seattle. I swore it was some classic rock song I couldn't put my finger on, but both Jim and Trevor thought I was on crack or something. During one of the equip. overloads when JM and Derek kind of sat there, JP and Mike went into VH's "You Really Got Me Now" (or whatever it's called) and when the power came back on, they flowed seamlessly into the song they were doing. When it went out a second time for Ytsejam, Mike and JP just kept on playing their parts until the others' power came back on. Aftershows: the two stupid girls already mentioned, but the dumbass who kept asking JP about KevMo. "Hey, heard from Kevin lately?" and such... and ending with "You really should give Kevin a call" (as in to get him back into the band). Give it up already! It still feels like people aren't accepting Derek as a legitimate member of the band. He walked through the crowd unnoticed in Seattle during Big Wreck. I should have yelled "hey!" at him, but thought of it too late. They guy would probably ask Geddy to give John Rusty a call, too. Idiot. Derek coming out of the bus with the waitress (fine, of course) with a bad look on his face and then coming back out of the club and high-fiving Trevor a few minutes later. ??? Tatoos: Greg had Mike sign his arm right underneath a recent majesty symbol tatoo. We'll see next time around if the sig becomes a tatoo, too (Tom Petty ref.) Thanks to Jim for driving. We'll see if we can get some more people next time. Got back to my house at 6:30 when it was just getting light. Slept 'till 3:00 !^)> Bad thing was, my CD player is on the blink and the damn Portland radio stations run public service shows during that time on Sundays. No music to listen to on the way home! As far as I know, the next leg of the Megadeth tour has Machine Head and Life Of Agony opening for them. They're playing here in Arizona, in Tucson, on New Years' Eve. Dream Theater definitely needs to be an opening act for a bigger band. I'm wondering why they've never done that. Seems they prefer headlining little clubs and not getting anywhere in sales. Look at bands like Fear Factory. I've never heard of FF headlining ANY show ('course I could be wrong). Every time I've heard of them playing a show it was in support of another act (Megadeth, Ozzy, etc.). They're also far more popular than Dream Theater and they haven't released a non-remix album since 1995. Mike Portnoy: For not having a constant foundation beat and being the "fill kill" Sometime this can be overkill, but I say "What the fuck" it sounds cool! Carter Beuford (sp.) of DMB: For never having a foundation beat, this guy plays like an 'old fashioned' jazz drummer and dancing on pulse of the beat. Mark Zonder: For being IMO the most solid prog drummer in the bizz, he really feels the beat, and has unique fills. Scott Rockenfield: Of Queensryche, my favorite all purpose drummer, he is "super-fancy" but damn is he solid. I like his drum sound too. Mike Bordon: I hate this guy's drum sound, BUT, for a primarily single bass player, he can really hold the beat well and has tremedous filling ability, I like to play along with him because 1. I can keep up and 2. His style fits mine. Nick Menza (Megadeth): This guy is just awesome, he can hit the drums hard while just ripping on speed, solid metal drummer. Vinny Paul (Pantera) this guy plays double bass like no one I have ever heard (and enjoyed) Dave ____. (Korn) this kid, literally (only like 17 or 18 now) has the best playing ability for his age and also has a fantastic ability to play fusion. I sort-of like the band but don't at the same time, if I say I like the band it's because of him. Sean Daniels (of Thanks to Gravity, NH local band) he has the ability of anyone I have mentioned here, and their album (scheduled for release in January) will knock your socks off, it will be on Capitol Records. Lars Ulrich: For just hitting the fucking drums so hard and revolutionizing the snare drum and cymbal hit (simulateously) that's all I have to say for Lars :( I'm bitter about the bands new image and new musical style. They aren't pissed off enough to be Metallica. Rick Allen (Def Leppard) I like this guy for a couple of reasons 1. He was really awesome when he had both arms (for the first 3 albums) then he lost it which 2. Makes me give him major props for having only 1 arm and still playing, when Hysteria came out he was all electric, as he got better on future albums he was able to play with more accoustic drums. Very impressive. Mike Mangini (former Extreme drummer before band broke up) he was unbeliveable when he took over at Paul Gearys position after his departure from the band. He was the man, he could play all of the stuff that Nuno wanted to do. Charlie Benedante: Of Anthrax, was the best speed drummer I have ever heard without playing hardcore death metal. "Got the time" has to be the fastest song that I have ever heard (or close to it) That's it... Later, J ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Nov 1997 23:11:22 -0500 (EST) From: "Richard A. It is merely good business sense to try to "milk" a product for all it's worth before releasing a new product into the marketplace. From the label's perspective, you eliminate the risk of over saturating the market. From the band's perspective, it allows for the most amount of time to recoup their deficit. If anything, the "current trend" has been to release a new product before the old one has run its course, which I believe to be a mistake. Case in point: Hootie & The Blowfish. For reasons unbeknownst to me, the powers that be decided to release "Fairweather Johnson" while "Cracked Rear View" was still in the Top 200 album charts. Same thing with Dave Matthews Band's album "Crash." They probably thought that the momentum would just carry over. What happens is that the sales of the new release eates into the potential sales of the old one and vice versa, thus making nobody happy. A "breathing period" is necessary between albums. Besides, a renewed interest in a band's previous albums almost ALWAYS accompanies a new release.
