Metallica are still good. ReLoad is a good album, so is Load. Just get rid of that annoying guitar sound. And bring back Cliff!! (OK, maybe not...) --- Anyway, back to me. Bought The Gathering's Mandylion today - bloody good band! The singer reminds me a lot of the guy from Lemur Voice. Which either means she's butch or he's the opposite of butch. Or it might just mean that they have similar singing styles. Yeah. Not nearly as much fun though. And when I paid for it at the counter at HMV, the counter-chick asked if I'd heard it. I said, "Some of it," and she said, "It's awesome." In a perfect world, she then would have said, "What other bands are you into? Dream Theater?? Savatage???" Then she would have said, "A lot of my female friends are into progressive metal too! We're all having a sleep-over tonight at my place and we're gonna listen to heaps of cds and stuff. You can come too if you like!" Ok, I know when I'm going too far. Would have been nice, though. Hoit" To: "'DT'" Subject: Portland-Some spoilage may occur Message-ID: I arrived way early in Portland from Seattle. There was only one other guy in line, so I hung out behind the theatre by the tour bus. I ran into DS, JM, and MP. We chatted a bit. They were cool. When the doors opened, I crotched my camera, but then they didn't search me. I got right up against the stage. The crowd was well behaved except for a trio of drunk women who would stop at nothing to get up to the front, including trying to stand right in front of a guy in a wheelchair. Big Wreck played. What's up with their logo? Are they trying to copy DT? They must be ok guys since JP wore their hat after both shows. Either that, or he just said, "Hey, free hat". Anyway DT played an awesome show, playing most of FII, some Awake, a couple from I&W, the Ytsejam, and most, if not all, of ACOS. They played UaGM, but not TAMP. They also improvised some ZZ Top song. At the end, MP went wild on the drums and then tossed his drumstool onto the stage. Later, he said he'd like to tip over some drums, but they're all connected, so he can't. I had an aftershow pass, but I only got to talk to JP and MP inside. DS and James were outside and JM was holed up in the bus. MP said he would probably finish up the Christmas cd on sunday. He also said we would probably not see Nightmare Cinema in Seattle. (We didn't) He said he and Derek like to do it, but the Johns are not really into it. He is also still looking for the last Holyfield fight on VHS. I got all their sigs except JM and drove home. Oh, yeah, and I met some Jammers. Hoit" To: "'DT'" Subject: Seattle-some spoilage may occur Message-ID: It's me again. The Fenix was totally sold out. I did not realize how small the place was until I saw MP's drum kit taking up half the stage. James said "It's like playing in somebody's living room or basement." There was a small balcony around the whole place, including behind the stage so the drummers could watch Portnoy from almost directly above. There was no room for running around or lava lamps. JP never even went to the other side of the stage. They played the same set as Portland except they added TAMP and cut UaGM, The Crimson Sunset, and didn't do the ZZ Top. (NOT odd, I've read.) :) Because of overloading, the power cut out twice to the bass and keyboards including during two songs, including the Ytsejam. They got the power back on in a couple minutes while JP and MP just improvised, then they just went on like nothing happened. What pro's OFB are. When I got outside DS was out already working the crowd, and JM was apparently in the bus. DS went back inside and came out with a blondie waitress and went to the bus. I said "You go, Derek!" and he gave me a big smile. But then they came out in a few minutes. She looked to be in a hurry to get back in the Fenix and DS was scurrying behind. He came back out alone and while walking by, initiated a high-five with me and said "Take it easy, dude". I'd kinda like to know what went on inside that bus. :) He and MP are definitely the most crowd friendly. Then the rest of the boys came out. MP recognized me from the night before, which was really cool. Then he asked me which show was better and I couldn't decide. Then the tour bus door opened and The Silent Man made an appearance! I quickly got his autograph to complete the set. I think the t-shirts were kind of lame, but I guess they were designed in a hurry. Maybe they'll have better ones next time, although they say Touring Into Infinity 97/98, so maybe not. They had a cooler long sleeve one in Seattle that they didn't have in Portland , but I had bought a mid-length sleeve one the night before, and I didn't have an extra $35, but at least I got a shirt. I also stole a cool promo-poster from the wall. I hung out with the Jammers I met in Portland and also met Ken McWatters and Nicole from Houston. Then I went home, reminiscing about my 5th and 6th DT shows. I think it's a waste of valueable disc space. They have other material that needs to fill that space more than a rerelease of a song we already have. However, I think there is a huge marketing potential in the relationship between Met1/I&W and Met2. Since I'm not a good marketeer, I can't suggest the best idea, but advertising the new Metropolis with a mention of I&W/Metropolis pt. 1 would probably be a good way to stimulate sales of the new one. Something to the effect of "This album picks up where I&W left off". Along those lines, does anyone know how FII is doing compared to I&W? I'm just curious if all the extras (Storm, Shirley, Desmond) have paid off, or if I&W will remain their most successful album. I'd personally love to see I&W remain the victor, which would prove that leaving the band alone to do their thing, their way is the best method - but I also don't want to chance them being dropped due to not enough sales. Even as much as people bitch about East/West, I think they'd be much worse off on another label.
