I'll be fast in this one (as I don't want hundreds of those jammers flaming me saying "Hey! This is not the place for this kind of stuff!"and all that), and you'll have to bear just one more of my reviews after this one (as far as I know :) ). For those of you who are asking "WTF is that?", yesterday (Saturday) there was a festival around here, with the goal of giving new bands a chance to show their work (there was a competition among those bands), and some bands were called to play after that competition. The opening band was the brazilian Dr. Sin (man, do they do opening shows... :) ), but I missed that one (I got to the stadium some hours after that :) ). Anyway, I had already seen them 4 times live. :) Then the competition begun, and nothing much to say about that, besides that all the bands were very disappointing, it seemed that for them the look was more important them the music, and everything was more to a circus show than a rock festival. Ok, off with that, came in Jason Bonham Band. Played some Led Zeppelin songs (The Song Remains the Same, Whole Lotta Love...), cool show, but too short!!! They played for less than an hour! And they did not play "Rock'n Roll", damn. Then came in Dio, and to all those who were saying he would not play any Sabbath songs, Mr. Dio made them swallow their words. :) They played "Heaven and Hell" and "Mob Rules" from Sabbath, and many Dio hits ("Rainbow on the Dark", "Holy Diver"...). Second best of the night. :) The best came in next, and his name is Mr. Bruce Dickinson. :) Very cool songs, and those same guys had to swallow their words again, 'cause they playde 4 Maiden songs: "2 Minutes to Midnight", "Powerslave", "Flight of Icarus" and "Run to the Hills". Also, many of Bruce's hits ("Tears of a Dragon", "Tatooed Millionaire", etc) and songs from the new album. :) Both of the shows were amazing, and although I liked Bruce's a little more musically, Dio was better in another way... Maybe because at Dio's I was near the stage, being pushed, squeezed, etc, etc, all that stuff that you guys who have tried that know :), and at Bruce's I went out of that mess to really watch the show. Anyway, both kicked ass. :) The headliners were Scorpions, but as no one (me and my friends) cared about Scorpions, we watched like 2 songs and went home. :) The only letdown was the rain, that fuck*d everything up. That's it, and you'll be hearing from me soon (ya know, Megadeth, Whitesnake and Queensr=FFche are playing here in December. :) ) --=20 []'s /**********************************************\ |* Marcelo Vanzin *| |* email_address_removed *| |* http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/6308/ *| \**********************************************/ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Nov 97 14:40:54 EST From: "Chung Ng" To: Subject: New Crimson Glory? My only experience of the Ozrics prior to Thursday night was 'Jurrasic Shift' which I loved, but since they get a lot of mentions on the Jam I thought I'd take a chance and splash out #8 to see them on their current UK tour. Well, they played London on the 13th and I have to admit that I left before the encore, which means to say that I didn't really have the greatest time of my life. The audience was eclectic to say the least - techno freaks, clubbers, Kiss fans, death Metal fans and the odd business man in a suit, who was obviously there because the place had a drinks license till 2AM. The average age was (for me) refreshingly older than I'd expected, in the late 20s - 30s range. The band came onstage around 10:30 and the set lasted about an hour and a half, during which time the crowd thinned considerably, which one could interpret as indicating that many were not happy with what they saw/heard or perhaps it was just that they were leaving so as to catch the last bus or train. ( I hope no-one is under the illusion that London is a buzzing 24-hour a day metropolis, it isn't) The sound was extreemly well mixed and balanced, not too loud for my already damaged eardrums and the visuals were excellent. Having never ventured into a techno nightclub, I can't make a true comparison, but it certainly matched my expectations in terms of the visual and aural experience. Flashing lights, lasers, slide shows etc - just like I used to see when I started going to Prog gigs in the 70's. So far so good. As for the music, well, as I said, my only exposure had been to Jurrasic Shift and its always difficult to really enjoy a gig when you are unfamiliar with the bulk of the band's material. In short there wasn't much that I recognised or liked particularly. The first half of the set seemed more keyboards driven, but the second half definately took a more rocky, guitar-orientated direction, much to my surprise. It wasn't bad enough to make me join those heading for the exit, but it wasn't good enough to grab me and have me screaming for an encore. I suppose I can best describe it as a sort of jazz/rock/techno fusion. At times the band really rocked, guitar to the front backed by a strong driving rythum section (including a live drummer), then at other times they viered off in a much jazzier direction with guitar and keyboards alternating as the lead instrument, just jamming away. If that's your kind of scene, then fine, but personally I could have done with some vocals to break things up. The interspersed woodwind instruments that made JS so different were the only instruments not to show up well in the mix and that was a shame. Anyway nothing ventured, nothing gained. My recommendation would be (if there's anyone who hasn't PgDown'd past this), would be that those jammers who like a band who jam and demonstrate their instrumental prowess should check them out. But if you find widdly jazzy guitar solos boring then give em a miss. Yes, I'm gonna be at the Chance on Nov. 25 along with my wife, a good friend of mine, and my father (!). I have a gut feeling that the place will be pretty much packed (unless someone knows something I don't). I've been to 3 DT gigs there, and they've packed 'em in every time. At least, I HOPE there will be lots of people there. If not, I'll just have to scream LOUDER! :-) Regarding the 'Tallica boyz... MANY thanx to Roger for posting the setlist for the Philly gig... I think I just shot my "load"! (Pun intended) I have GOT to get a boot of this one! Let's just hope that the next tour features a lot of the same tunes... HOLY CRAP!! :-D Regarding the new Metallica single, I actually love the song! But, hey, to each their own. I know that a lot of Jammers have become disillusioned with the band over the past few years, but I have absolutely loved everything they've put out. I will avoid the whole "why Metallica changed their style" thread and simply say that I think the new song is great, and I'm going nuts waiting for ReLoad on Tuesday! Regarding Rhapsody, does anyone know where I can find any kind of sound files on this band? I read a great review of them a while ago, and now they're heavily hyped on the Jam. I am intrigued. Can anyone help? Or... would anyone be willing to make me a tape copy of the album? Private e-mails only please. Thanks. That's it.
