Message-ID: Hi Has anybody allready heard Metallica's new single "The Memory Remines" ? Sorry Metallica fans, but this songs totally sucks. It is a poor clone of "The God That Falied" with a bit of Load sound. What the hell are Metallica doing ? Hard Country/Blues ?!?!?! I just hope that "The Unforgiven II" will be as good as the original, which is my favorite song from the Black Album. Yeah man, we can't friggin' wait either. It's a 7-CD MP3-format box set called "Godot", and it's set for release in 2003. Since it's such a big album (49 hours of music, yet only 5 songs), they had to release parts of it on separate record labels. The 3 'commercial' CDs, "Metropolis Part 8: The Miracle, The Peeper, The Bed Wetter and the Stalker" (a Trilogy) will be released on Elektra, while the 2 light albums "We Wanna Be Rush 'Cause We Can Do it Better" (Vols. 1 & 2) will be released on Virgin Records. And then, for all us hardcore fans, the 2 deathmetal albums "You Asked For It" and "Vulgar Display of Flowers" will be released on Roadrunner and Metal Blade respectively. My opinion: This is KILLEr band. Romeo is the cutting edge guitarist... the music is heavy prog metal. I'm told the singer sounds a lot like Dio, but I don't hear it. Their best album is The Divine Wings of Tragedy. Huge variety of styles, a TON of aggression, and a 20+ minute epic song! The lyrics are good, the vocals are in key and great (Which is what killed their first album) the bass is NOT played with a pick, the drummer would give Portnoy a run for his money (I haven't heard SX live, so I can't say who I think is better... but then, no one has seen Symphony X live to my knowledge.). They have a great keyboardist who doubles leads at times, and adds his own a la Jens Johanssen or Kevin Moore. Very classically oriented. Michael Romeo is a monster though... he's got an unbelieveable command of tapping, legato and alternate picking. The band's first two albums leave just a little to be desired in this field, because the solos were a little bit like Yngwie on crack.... but on TDWoT, it's painful. Some friends and I have tabbed out some of the solos on the album... and the pain has not yet gone away! Check Symphony X out! And while you're at it, get Holy Land, by Angra! I'd be fully recovered if I would stop listening to my DT cd's! A few more observations if you will. John Myung: Mr Silent Man...WOW! He doesn't look too much out at the audience but he is right there out front. Watching him it appears that he literally is the music he plays, not just a man playing the bass, but becoming the music he creates. And to watch him play the stick...what a thrill! I had never seen one before. I have met Billy Sheehan and seen him play, but now after seeing Mr. Myung, Billy is no longer my number one favorite bass player and with good reason (Sorry Billy). Also when he starts to shred on his bass (I guess that's what you would call it) Damn do his fingers fly! I regret not getting the opportunity for a picture and an autograph but 4 out of 5 ain't too bad. John Petrucci: I was right in front where I could see him play and what emotion there was on his face and in his playing. When he played Take Away My Pain you could see it and feel it! One of the greatest guitar players I have ever seen and heard. James LaBrie: It takes a lot of work to sing like he does night after night. I guess at some points he sounded a little tired, but when he did Doug P.'s parts on Lines in the Sand...WOW! Also PMU which was the song that made me a fan for life, was done so well! The megaphone with the mic made it a bit difficult to understand him. But he does an awesome job of holding his own when you have 4 extremely talented musicians playing at top form. Derek S: Lava lamps and alien TV or not...I want the furry rug his keyboards were on! Say what you will, but it takes alot to hold your own against the two Johns! And he and John P were cracking smiles at each other during the show, so it sure didn't look like their were any bad vibes that others noticed at previous shows! Mike Portnoy: I saved the best for last! Damn what a kit! No problems that night with his set-up! Also, his version of Metallica is not bad....he sounds better than they do! How does somebody play like that night after night? He holds nothing back and his solo was amazing! He was all over his kit! He should also think about entering a spit for distance contest...he would win hands down! When he finished the show show he lokked like he could have played for another 2-3 hours and still be at top form. Mike Portnoy...the Energizer Drummer! Alright I'm done....that was a hell of a show and I can't wait until they come around again in 1998! I'll move heaven and earth to see them when they play the Bay Area again. -- Hearts away.......
