Message-ID: > I still like the one Eck stole from me, from Megadeth's Five Magics. > :) Heh heh, so do I! >;) Anyhoo, Phoenix was a rockin' rilly loudly (Okay, so it was Mesa...in Mesa Amplifier...er...Ampitheater) last night at the Pantera/Anthrax/Coal Chamber show. I'm going to review this concert, so those who listen to the weaker variety of music and don't follow any of these bands can delete this post and move on with your email-reading lives. :) Or, if you're in digest mode, scroll down to the next header... Not only did I get out of an Art History lecture (YEEEEEEHAW!) but right before we hit the turn-in for the Mesa Ampitheater parkinglot, a huge red tour bus pulled in front of us.... heh heh heh. We followed that thing to the parkinglot, jumped out of Vinnie's van, and high-tailed it to the ampitheater, where all the other metalheads were gathering. After stealing about 6-8 Anthrax posters, and a couple Megadeth posters, and buying our Anthrax shirts, we found a spot right next to the soundboard, and here's the substantial part of this review; the bands: Coal Chamber: Ugh, somebody mentioned these guys on this very mailing list when Ozzfest was terrorizing the nation earlier this year, and even said that they were GOOD. :^/ Yeah, well, I didn't see what was so hot about 'em. They sounded like a Korn-rip off w/ bad techs (the left side of their speaker system kept goin' out during their set) and looked like the Misfits w/o any muscles. I.e., this band just sucked. It had heavy guitars and a groove, but it wasn't very inspiring (or inspired, for that matter). Vince, Uncle Dave and I were actually more interested in the Marilyn Manson they were playing while the band set up...despite the absolute posuer-ness of Manson, they are heavy, and a couple of the tunes we heard from that disc (Anti-Christ Superstar) were very metal indeed. Anthrax: What do I have to say? It's Anthrax. :) The dude playing lead guitar looked like Billy Idol on steroids, with the Hetfield outfit (black jeans, black sleeveless shirt, black wrist bands), playing a bright red Jackson Explorer. Pantera stayed in the background watching the entire set and getting into the music themselves (It was VERY cool watching Dimebag headbanging to Fueled); hey, they're 'thrax fans too :). For those 'thrax fans who stopped following the band after John Bush joined, I seriously recommend you go to the next 'Thrax concert and hear/watch Bush put Belladonna to shame, the old stuff sounds AWESOME w/ JB singing it! They should produce another live album.... Oh yeah, they played a new song off of Volume 8 (the new upcoming album)...and it SERIOUSLY rips a new asshole! WHy couldn't Metallica do this? (don't answer that) Double bass all over the place, parts of it reminded me of Stomp, but most of the song reminded me of White Noise, plus a "little more." Between the 'thrax and pantera act a fight broke out between a Pantera fan and a Korn fan...guess who one.... Pantera: We had to wait forEVER for these guys to start their act thanks to the group of 50 or so morons up near the stage, where the crew was trying to place a barracade. This massive dude walked out there and had to ask AT LEAST 20 times for the crowd to move back! 20 minutes later, they're still asking for the crowd to leave, the rest of the audience is shouting "Move the fuck back!" and 2 guys from Pantera had already told the audience to "Move the fuck back, we want to fuckin' jam already!" After that small incident :^P they finally started their act, Dimebag on squeely guitar, Vinnie Paul on skins, Rex on bass, and Phil as screamer/singer/bullshitter. Their set was totally intense, and not only did they go up there and blow us all away with their sheer loudness, they had a few tricks up their asses. I nearly creamed my pants seein' Anthrax AND Pantera on stage together! In the middle of the Pantera set, Rob Halford of Judas Priest fame walked out on the stage and sang vocals for a Judas Priest cover (I dunno which one, I haven't followed Judas Priest yet, but it kicked a LOT of ass!). And for the final song (before the encore) Scott Ian jumped onto the stage w/ one of Dimebag's guitars, and played rythm for either Fucking Hostile or Mouth For War...I forget which one 'cuz I was just havin' too much fun watchin'/hearing Scott Ian and Dimebag stomping around the stage together. WHAT A SHOW!!! If they had Flotsam and Jetsom playing instead of Coal Chamber, this would've been the perfect thrash concert. :) Heh heh, that chick who had the spotlights on her was too damn shy...she didn't even take the bra above her nipples! ;D After seein' Pantera live, I understand the band a whoooole lot more now. They're very down to earth, and Phil isn't as big an asshole as I thought. :) And before some of you start flaming me for posting this review on the ytsejam....let me say, DT KEEPS DITCHING AZ! This concert has to hold us 'till Ged knows when they'll play here :( I have to recipricate some of my jealousy back to you guys, don't I? ;) Still dazed, deaf, and amazed, ~Eckie wonders how long his DT concert review will be...if they ever come.... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Nov 1997 16:40:12 -0700 (MST) From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Cc: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: Live music Message-ID: > I have seen Dream Theater live 4 times. Message-ID: Rogerio was asking about this earlier. I got Loreena McKennit's The Book of Secrets this week. It is just as good as any CD she ever released. It kicks total ass - in its own way :-) I've discovered her through a Brazilian friend 4 years ago, when I had just moved to the US. Looking through the booklet of this latest Loreena CD is gonna take me time: only the list of musicians that played on the CD is larger than some bands' lyrics books :P . Plus, she writes a whole essay on each one of the songs - in both English and French. Now, this kinda pissed me off (I'm just joking by the way): >I have seen Dream Theater live 4 times. >But I have never seen them play my 3 favorite songs live. >Am I just unlucky? :) Josh, I know the point you're making, of being unlucky for having gone to 4 DT shows and they didn't play your fave songs. But at least you got to see them 4 times. I have yet to see them live because they've never been anywhere near the place where I was at a certain times. When I lived in Brazil, of course they were never there. Then I lived in Atlanta for a while, and the Awake tour didn't come anywhere near. Finally I moved to Tampa, and the same thing happened... the closest place would have been Chicago, but I'm not up for a 15 hour drive... Wait, maybe Pittsburg is closer :_( K. After you see him live, it makes you want to go home and practice some scales :P And to the people who are still complaining about FII: I also think that DT has the capability of coming up with something a bit better than this, but quite frankly, this is still an awesome CD. Considering the circumstances, the record label fights, and the current state of the music market, I think it's a miracle that the CD has as much prog stuff in it as it does. Remember, these are the days when Yes is not in a major label anymore, and Queensr=FFche and Rush are releasing grungey-sounding stuff... I do like= their latest CDs, but you have to agree with me that all these bands are suffering pressure from their labels... K. "I don't want to be saved. Sorry in advance for the string of obscenities that will follow, so feel free to scroll forward if you find this offensive, but with the occasional "vulgarity" thread that pops up on the Jam from time to time, I found this strangely appropriate for posting. Enjoy! <> Perhaps one of the most interesting and colorful words in the English language today is the word "fuck". It is the one magical word which, just by its sound, can describe pain, pleasure, love, and hate. In language, "fuck" falls into many grammatical categories. It can be used as a verb, both transitive (John fucked Mary) and intransitive (Mary was fucked by John). It can be an action verb (John really gives a fuck), a passive verb (Mary really doesn't give a fuck), an adverb (Mary is fucking interested in John), or as a noun (Mary is a terrific fuck). It can also be used as an adjective (Mary is fucking beautiful) or an interjection (Fuck! I'm late for my date with Mary). It can even be used as a conjunction (Mary is easy, fuck she's also stupid). As you can see, there are very few words with the overall versatility of the word "fuck". Aside from its sexual connotations, this incredible word can be used to describe many situations: 1. Greetings "How the fuck are ya?" 2. Fraud "I got fucked by the car dealer." 3. Resignation "Oh, fuck it!" 4. Trouble "I guess I'm fucked now." 5. Aggression "FUCK YOU!" 6. Disgust "Fuck me." 7. Confusion "What the fuck.......?" 8. Difficulty "I don't understand this fucking business!" 9. Despair "Fucked again..." 10. Pleasure "I fucking couldn't be happier." 11. Displeasure "What the fuck is going on here?" 12. Lost "Where the fuck are we." 13. Disbelief "UNFUCKINGBELIEVABLE!" 14. Retaliation "Up your fucking ass!" 15. Denial "I didn't fucking do it." 16. Perplexity "I know fuck all about it." 17. Apathy "Who really gives a fuck, anyhow? 18. Greetings "How the fuck are ya?" 19. Suspicion "Who the fuck are you?" 20. Panic "Let's get the fuck out of here." 21. Directions "Fuck off." 22. Disbelief "How the fuck did you do that?" It can be used in an anatomical description - "He's a fucking asshole." It can be used to tell time - "It's five fucking thirty." It can be used in business - "How did I wind up with this fucking job?" It can be maternal - "Motherfucker." It can be political - "Fuck Dan Quayle!" It has also been used by many notable people throughout history: "What the fuck was that?" Mayor of Hiroshima "Where did all these fucking Indians come from?" General Custer "Where the fuck is all this water coming from?" Captain of the Titanic "That's not a real fucking gun." John Lennon "Who's gonna fucking find out?" Richard Nixon "Heads are going to fucking roll." Anne Boleyn "Let the fucking woman drive." Commander of Space Shuttle "What fucking map?" "Challenger," Mark Thatcher "Any fucking idiot could understand that." Albert Einstein "It does so fucking look like her!" Picasso "How the fuck did you work that out?" Pythagoras "You want what on the fucking ceiling?" Michaelangelo "Fuck a duck." Walt Disney "Why?- Because its fucking there!" Edmund Hilary "I don't suppose its gonna fucking rain?" Joan of Arc "Scattered fucking showers my ass." Noah "I need this parade like I need a fucking hole in my head." J.F.K. <> ..Hope at least some of you enjoyed it! :-) Anyway, moving on to DTC... > I was at a bootleg CD convention in Baltimore about a year ago and saw > a CD of early DT while they were still at Berkley( and without a singer > I might add).
