I know that the computer is supposed to factor in the correct amount of space after a period, rendering an additional space unneseccary. But, if you look over a jam and take note of how many people type two spaces and how many don't, you'll see that people use two spaces. It's become a standard. It's perfectly fine to type one space on a computer. I think even DOS has the proper spacing for it. But you still won't see many people doing it, ever. Another relic of typing left over from typewriters is the keyboard layout. The QWERTY system is designed to be difficult to type on, so that early typewriters wouldn't break because of high speed typing. A much more efficient layout is the DVORAK layout. But that hasn't taken off, and it doesn't look like one-space-after-a-period will either. Conan sucks tonight. josh email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Nov 1997 00:02:54 -0600 From: "=?iso-8859-1?Q?Marroqu=EDn_Arellano?=" To: Subject: FII Message-ID: <01bcef30$9ddce760$message_id_removed> I am impressed FII. Its a whole new world! When I listened to it for the first time I was dissapointed. I thought it lacked the jams other albums used to have (like the middle of metropolis). But now I've discovered that this album is another side of DT (I hope they have many other sides). I think this album has a lot of feeling, maybe more than the others. I specially like the new snare sound and the sound itself. Maybe its the mix (congratulations to Kevin Shirley for this). Maybe DS has something to do with this too. FII has one of the best mixes i've heard. I think the sound engineer is the person that nobody notices, but its so important that he can either screw up a great new band, or make a lousy band sound good (maybe Hanson falls into this category?). Thank you Kevin Shirley for giving us something great. I don't think KJLB is missing anything (like some say the vibrato). I love his singing on this record. Maybe this also has to do with the mix. It doesn't have all the delay it had on the other records. STRANGEITUDE, ARBORESCENCE and BECOME THE OTHER are all excellent, too, but for that groove "feel" I'd give the edge to JS. Note that I have yet to hear an Ozrics CD that was less than "reallllly good." I recently obtained ERPSONGS at the Chicago Tower Records (it's my official souvenir from the DT trip there :)) and musically it's terrific (and old; this is c. 1985 stuff), but my copy has some odd dropouts on it that might be a problem with the mastering. Kinda neet, with all the recent discussion of Yes, Cairo, etc., but I've just learned that legendary album cover artist Roger Dean, whose beautiful scapes have graced innumerable Yes albums (and others), will be a featured artist guest at "my" convention here in Atlanta, Dragon*Con, over Labor Day Weekend in 1998. Rahhhhh, it's gonna be a prog year. :) This is the first post I've made anywhere; I haven't even updated our Website, at www.dragoncon.org, yet. :) DTC: I've been given permission to invite both Dream Theater and Superior to play (the convention chairman has heard and likes both bands), and while I don't expect any miracles, either band would benefit greatly from a performance , since the convention should draw at least 18,000 (our attendance last year). If GWAR and Glass Hammer can play, why not DT and Superior? :) Neil Evans (I think), THANKS for arranging to get Superior to the folks at thedj.com. I have no doubt they'll play them and that they'll be well-received. Now, if only hardradio.com would play them. :) (It's official; my old browser does NOT like thedj.com's Web site. GPF error every time. Bleah.) Personal note: as some of you IRC regulars know, my British author friend Storm Constantine recently dedicated a US-released chapbook to me "for my help Stateside." Now she's gone and given me another 15 minutes of fame, mentioning me quite prominently in the Acknowledgements of her latest book (released in the UK). I'll post the full text on my Web page sometime tomorrow. Needless to say, I'm walking on air right now. :) -- +-- ...once the cloud that's raining ---+- Paul W. Many years ago, I tried a set of 008's. I had two problems, the first one was that the strings are too soft, the second was that the 1st string broke almost at once. (I mean, if you eyeball it, it'll bend, I swear.) :-) However, a high A could be used for straight tapping stuff. I believe Jennifer Batten has one guitar set up with 008.'s and a scalloped fretboard, used for tapping only. BTW, has anybody tried out the Wahburn 36-fret-guitar?, and, does anybody out there recommend scalloped fretboards? Later! Message-ID: Hi all, OK, this has to be the most interesting misheard lyric in a while. First time I was listening to ToT, instead of "cultivating my own nonsense," I thought the lyric was "cultivating bio-nonsense." This tied in with "bringing change, bringing movement, bringing life," maybe making it some sci-fi song about this twisted Dr. Frankenstein guy with this strange secluded genetic engineering plant. Then, with "welcome to the wasteland, where you find ashes, nothing but ashes," I picture this evil scientist guy incinerating all of these twisted creatures that he's concocting. Not quite Myung's style, but hey, it was creative enough, so maybe... Yeah, I actually thought this at first. So I was wrong. Except... All of a sudden, someone posted that funny twist of the lyrics, "where you'll find asses, nothing but asses." And that got me back to my original interpretation of the lyrics, about the bio-nonsense. And then it all clicked! Ready, SouthPark fans? Say in your best Marlon Brando-esque twisted scientist voice, "...And here we have the four-assed monkey..." (and so on). Zounds! I was right all along! John Myung--SouthPark fan! Next Myung interpretation: "Lifting Shadows Off of Big Gay Al's Big Gay Animal Farm" (or maybe not...)
