Message-ID: oh yeah, i also got a mix tape over the weekend (altho not the ones from bigswifty's trade thingy) that included a coupla bands that y'all might be interested in...... Two band on there were Scanner and Sinner, the latter was more towards more straight ahead German-like Power metal.....Scanner might have a few progressive tendencies if you wanna be kind.... there was another band on the tape, I only got 4 songs from them, but those songs are HUGEly cool.......I'm told that the band, SANVOISEN are german progressive/power metal.....all I know is that I'm gonna be picking this CD up if I find it..... lemme describe the first song in terms of other stuff you might know.....begins with a Tool-like bassline, but that isn't hidden among other weird instrumentation, it's out there audible throughout the whole song......vocalist has the power of John Arch with none of the screech.... aw, darn, I haven't listened to the sanvoisen stuff enough..... anyone else hear/hear of this band? I'd like to know more..... oh and Uriah Heep......i was under the impression these guys were a tired old classic rock band......apparently, I'm wrong......any decent web pages dedicated to them? or any info i should know that someone might be able to impart to me? partha ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Nov 1997 19:36:18 -0500 (EST) From: Damon Fibraio To: Phil Carter Subject: Re: Cairo Message-ID: I have the Cairo CD and if you like Emerson Lake and Palmer style songs with just a little more guitar in them, then you may like this band. Neil Peart of Rush ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Nov 1997 18:54:28 -0600 From: "Ryan Whitaker" To: Subject: "Run Faster from the Fans" open for pre-orders Message-ID: <19971112005431.AAA24740@hombre> For those of you who like Rush, Scarred Records is proud to announce "Run Faster from the Fans", a re-release of the earlier KTS bootleg entitled "Run from the Fans". The original bootleg, taken from a 4/17/92 Roll the Bones concert, is widely noted for its excellent sound quality. However, it has always been given less-than-extraordinary ratings because it runs too slow! Here's where Scarred comes in. =) The best estimates say that the original "Run from the Fans" runs about 5% too slow. Based on my testing, that number is more like 3.2%. So I sped it up that 3.2%, and I also gave it a needed slight bass boost. All of this was done digitally, so there is no sound degradation at all! All of this combined yields "Run Faster from the Fans", a CD which sounds *better* than the original, which is awesome considering the original's sound quality is already considered superior to most others from that tour! The liner will be much better than the original's as well. It will be full-color, glossy, and magazine-quality, and NOT a dupe of the original packaging! For information on this disc, which is open for pre-ordering NOW, visit: http://www.geocities.com/soho/2236 Also newly available from Scarred is "watchful.eye", a Rush MP3 compilation disc which contains six complete boots on one disc. As far as Dream Theater compilation discs go, I have around 25 "Seven Wonders" (7 Mike Bahr DT creations on one disc) discs left and around 205 "Spinning Years" (6 complete double-disc DT concerts on one disc) discs left. Get them while you can! =) Take care all, Ryan Whitaker - Scarred Records - http://www.geocities.com/soho/2236 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Nov 1997 20:14:36 -0500 (EST) From: Eric John Marlett To: email_address_removed Subject: Just wondering... Message-ID: I was just reading the post about someone saying they wouldn't be able to make it to Tradewinds until ten and whether or not they were going to miss much, and I was just wondering how close to the scheduled time DT is actually taking the stage these days. I've only been privileged enough to attend one DT show(HFTH Birch Hill, 12/29/95) and the doors opened at 8, we all stood around inside for a couple hours, then Rudess/Morgenstein came out around 10 or 10:30, played for a bit, and OFB finally showed up a little after midnight if I remember correctly. I don't know if that's normal or what, but I was just curious..... Wow...this message of Virgilio's really hit a nerve with me. I think, as an American, that Cuba goes pretty much unnoticed, and that's really sad. I mean, we have this beautiful (and huge) island just a couple of hundred miles south of our country, yet they are completely cut off from the United States. Conditions (from what the media feeds me) are abysmal down there...yet we ignore this. I'm not into politics...but if I was, I think I would seriously re-think the Cuban embargo issue. There has to be a happy medium. Besides, from what my Canadian friends tell me...Cuba is a great place to visit. BTW...Canada has no problem with Cuba. Travel is allowed to and from Cuba and Canada, and they trade goods (yes, you can get a fine Cuban cigar in Toronto!) with each other. Anyway...my point is...we should help this guy out in some way, if possible. He is sort of in the position that we were about 3 months ago...listening to crappy .RA files of FII, and audience recordings of the Fix shows...wishing we could crank up a clean CD copy in our stereos. I can't even imagine having to listen to a 4th generation analog tape of I&W...and know that's the best you're going to get. I don't know if the US Post office allows mail to be sent to Cuba, but I'm going to check it out, and maybe I'll send him my extra FII CD (store purchased, non-promo ;-) ). Are there any other jammers out there who live in countries facing problems similar to Cuba's? Just curious. I don't have "Silent Miracles", but I love "Somewhere Out In Space". Kia is on vocals, so you'll have to make the call if you prefer his style. I agree that the live CD is a great way to compare the sounds, and I really agree that you can't go wrong with any of them :) >>Are all of Stratovarius's albums as good as "Episode" and "Visions"? > >In my opinion, no. I would spend my extra cash on >the cds from the first two bands you mentioned before delving into >the Stratovarius back catalog. What good is a post that does nothing but agree with the previous one? :) If you have "Episode" and "Visions", then you have the essential Stratovarius, on those albums they really came into their own, with "Visions" being my personal favorite. I have to make a comment on their current vocalist, Timo Kotipelto. He is amazing! Maybe it's not so apparent on the albums (at least it wasn't to me). But having recently had the chance to see them play an acoustic gig, their first and most likely their last :(, I have to give credit where credit is due. The guy is a fantastic singer. Without loud electronic backing, he really had a chance to show his chops. I guess with all the electronic processing and multiple takes that are a given on most modern albums, I am a bit blase about perfect vocals. But when it's live, it's put up or shut up time, and that's when the real musicians shine. And man, Timo kicked some serious butt. He hit every note, and then some. Some of his vocal gymnastics were so amazing, they even solicited a smile from Timo Tolkki (Stratovarius' guitarist), which was a rare thing indeed if you had seen the show. If you haven't yet, these guys are definately worth checking out. And if you see them live and happen to archive the show, I'd love to hear from you :) Stephan (anxiously waiting the promised Brasil shows in 1998) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Nov 1997 22:54:44 -0500 (EST) From: "Richard A. First take into consideration that a CD-quality,90-minute tape made by either TDK or Maxell will give you about 46:40 of recording time on each side. Then... Side A: Mirror/Lie (13:19) New Millenium (8:20) Peruvian Skies (6:43) Caught in a Web (5:28) Lines in the Sand (12:05) Total: 45:55 Side B: Erotomania/Voices (16:38) 6:00 (5:31) Scarred (11:00) Trial of Tears (13:07) Total: 46:16 Maximize your tape time. It's fun. -Topher PS Did I see a post on the Jam concerning Yanni? I respect the man as a musician, but there's just some things you don't mix (eg., DT and Yanni).
